Another ILLEGAL ALIEN driving with a fake license. You know, he doesn't have a CDL. He probably can't even speak English with the name Guillermo Vargas. I smell a lawsuit, a wrongful death!! So long, to Jamaica Ash you will be out of business soon. You should have hired an american. Keep it union.

How do you know this guy is illegal?

If those back up lights and noise makers are working, anyone who is not deaf and blind should see and hear them. If they weren't working, then the company should be sued.

The other problem I see is that this guy was working alone. Most garbage trucks have 2 or even 3 guys to make sure that a tragedy like this doesn't happen.

It's a horrible story and berating the driver who was only trying to make a living and did not deliberately run down these kids doesn't make it better.

Kaeli, I'll never forget the time we spent together at Centenary. You are truly an amazing person and will live on in the heart of the Centenary Cyclones forever.

How the hell does someone manage to get run over by a garbage truck? It's not like they're tiny things that can't be seen. Then again, so many people walk around blind as if they're in their own world.

This is a horrible tragedy,I'm sure this person did not mean to do this, why bash him,you have no idea of his legal status.Don't count on Jamaica Ash going out of business anytime soon. They have more cabbage than a Jersey farmer

It's a testament to the future of this Country that even college-aged people don't know to NOT walk behind a garbage truck.

Sad but overwhelmingly preventable.

I agree, the truck has that very annoying beeping sound when in reverse, that even Hellen Keller would notice. It's a sad story but there seems to be some major lack of commonsense involved.

Every time I back out of a parking space, some imbecile would insist on walking behind my car. I have always wondered how stupid one has to be to insist on walking behind tons of moving metal.

I don't understand how this could have happened if the reverse buzzer was working, unless they were very very close to the back of that truck. Makes no sense, at all. Sounds like the young woman had a nice life (her own horse) so at least she got to live a little, more than I can say for some kids who grow up in complete poverty, have nothing and tragically die young.

Don't know if it was the case here, but I see lots of people plugged into their i-pods constantly and they are always oblivious to what's going on around them. Same scenario with the cell phones.

With a building in front of the dumpster that was just emptied, in what direction would you like the driver to go? Should he have driven up on the sidewalk to avoid the people crossing the road behind the truck?

A young woman who was the only child in her family is dead. She was only 19 years old. Her parents are left now to bury her with no hopes of ever seeing her graduate college, grow into her twenties, fall in love, grow into a promising career, get married or have children.

A second student lies in hospital in critical condition. The extent of his injuries have not been made public. Who knows how long it may take for him to recover.

Lastly, the truck driver, who is not culpable of anything until the police conclude their investigation, sits with the guilt of a young person's death on his mind.

Yet you people sit here and debate back and forth about the driver's immigration status or whether the students were wearing ipods?!

Go look in the mirror and grow a heart!

Go hug your kids and call your parents. Tell someone you love them. May you never experience the tragedy the families of these people have felt today.

My sincerest condolences all around. You are in my prayers.

Instead of having a bleeding heart, why don’t people take just a little time to be careful. It’s incredibly simple and the result (preserving life) is priceless.

I for HAVE had face tragedy. I lost my older sister at 35. To me, and a few others here find that there is a growing amount of pure stupidity among the younger people, as well as some people in general. An eight ton truck, in reverse, reverse warning lights and the beeping, ah...hello. Yes it's unfortunate, but if people took their heads out from their rectums and concentrated on what they ARE supposed to be doing at the time, much of these "quirky" accidents would be avoided.
