It might be worthwhile for these cities to install SEVERAL video cameras taking pictures of different viewpoints at the intersections where these hit-and-run accidents are repeatedly taking place.

The roads are dangerous. If you get a flat tire on the highway, just get off the road as far as you can and get away from the car. For some reason people are in a big rush all the time in Conn.

make it a mandatory prison sentence for leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury...

it will send a message.

Unsolved, my #$$! It's largely a result of allowing illegal aliens to reside unimpeded in New Haven, and not enforce any laws when they commit crimes. Who else has no drivers license or insurance? Yeah, SOME US citizens don't have a drivers license or insurance card. However, it is a small percentage of the population of US citizens that don't have either or both. But how many illegal aliens have EITHER? Answer: none. Whoever concluded that this 'mystery' is 'unsolved' is dense, and is FIRED!

I don't understand what they are afraid of when they commit a crime. All they have to do is show their Elm City ID card and get their free pass. All of the shootings, hit and runs, car racing, and anything else, they should just admit to if they did it. They wouldn't be held responsible for anything and would be free to go.

I'm sure many of the hit and runs are committed by individuals who either don't have a valid driver's license and/or don't have insurance. Additionally how many of these vehicles are not registered and driven by under age drivers. Every year the cost of owning and operating a vehicle goes up and we are not getting our money's worth. Local and State governments are not watching out for the tax payers.

Renee,
It's sad, but as you continue to read more and more on this website, it's clear that little, if any proofreading of stories takes place. It seems that they hire HS grads to write these articles, with no fact-checking, proofreading, or any other journalistic aspect.

WTNH really needs to start hiring college grads to work the news department.

Renee, I am sorry for your loss though, and I hope that (even though it's hard) it begins to get better with time.

They are afraid of I.C.E. But they are certainly not afraid of the NH police. And they certainly aren't responsible adults.

Hello Renee,

Richie was not only my boyfriend, but the love of my entire life. It feels like yesterday he was taken away. I am glad that they brought it up, however they should have stated the facts, that they know who did it, but will never prosecute because of the statue of limitations.

Chris,

Thankfully someone sees the damage this ridiculous stature does. The person who killed Richie has been identified, and actually was id'ed before the 5 years was up. Dearington decided not to prosecute, he is awful!

What we need are people to contact their senators and demand that this statute be changed. Most people do not know that in Richie's case they knew who hit him BEFORE the statute ran out. They (our own Michael Dearington) chose not to prosecute. If you are interested in the whole story read:
http://www.deadlyroads.com/memorial/RichardRi...
(thanks to Richie's mom for the photo)
What pure is pure evil? A person who not only hits someone but never even brakes after realizing what they've done. They left Richie in the street to die.
Richie was the most wonderful person in the world. We went out for 5 years and lived together. Not all of those 5 years were easy, due to me, not him, and he always stood by me, 100%. He would give someone the shirt off his back. I never met anyone who didn't love Richie the minute they met him. He had a smile that would light up any room you were in. It changed my life so much, the pain never goes away. Now that this person got away with it, they could not even have the decency to call his mother and tell her how sorry he is for taking her son? He knows he is never going to be arrested. I hope he reads this. I hope he knows the lives he's ruined by killing Richie. I hope he knows what a wonderful person he killed, how Richie touched so many lives? Does he even care? Obviously not.
I was so lucky to see Richie's beautiful face the week before he was killed, if not, I do not know how I could bear the pain.
Richie, I love you still with all my heart. I remember the first time we met at Peat Meadow with Bobby and Ronny D. I remember our first kiss and our first apartment. And all of the funny things you used to do. You were the biggest Steelers fan in the world. And the people you loved, you loved with all of your heart.
I love you so much, to this day the pain still tears my soul apart. Someday we will be together again. I see you in my dreams, and they are so sweet I do not want to wake up. Because when I am asleep I am with you again.
Love You Always-Beth

Government is not watching out for its citizens by letting these cowards walk free after they hide for 5 years. That is a statute that needs to be changed. Why stop, right? Nothing happens to you if you don't anyway.

So sad all the dumb murders going on with cars...I call them murders when they have no licence and/or insurance. They just are beasts. They do not care... the law is so messed up today. Look at the stuff in Washington...we don't hear about the congressional so called leaders who want to pay the criminals who stole our money. That is another story though...I hope the cops will realize what sadness comes over all who loose a loved one this horrific way...I pray for the families...and friends of the latest one in Connecticut the 72 year old woman...in West Haven...a friend of mine was in an accident in Branford, it was a doctor who got sick and hit 4 or 5 cars and no police report done on it yet...what a mess...it is at least 3 weeks about that one...sorry I am rambling here...just too discusted with what is going on here in our country...I blame hollywood with all the crime movies...shootings and car chasing...awful stuff. I better stop now...it gets me so angry...and what can be done. Hit and runs happen down here but we have put in cameras on the busy streets...Peace to all...

Thank you, Mary. It is so nice to know that people DO care. You are so right, they are murders when they leave the scene knowing that they killed a person.

I have a question. If the statue of limitations has ran out,(many years ago now.) Why does the connecticut cold cases page still have the case listed with the reward? They obviously can't prosecute,(which is wrong, there should be no statue of limitations on anything resulting in the death of a person.) As far as that goes, if they "know" who did it, why is it still listed as 'unsolved'. This case really confuses me. I was researching hit and run cases in that area and time frame. Upon learning that there is indeed a statue of limitations on vehicular manslaughter it makes my research pointless.
I do want to give my condolences to the family of the young man though and I am sorry that our justice system has failed many like you in not giving the families of such victims justice and closure.
