I just saw a notice in the Kuca high rise that this Morthland College wanabe wants the city council to evict everyone in both high rises so they can use them for dorms. Anyone know anything about this? I heard they only had 7 students so far and are in an old storefront across from the post office.

Actually i am attending Morthland and there are 66 students as of now. Last year there were 11 and now 66 which is a huge improvement. Mostly from sports. No i don't have a clue about the high rise because i am staying home but it is no "wanna be college". Thank you

The council will do damn near anything Morthland College asks under the assumption it will bring money to this town. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure someone will), but Morthland College is a christian not for profit and therefor will not now nor ever pay taxes to the city, county, or state.. I didn't even think they were accredited. I'm sure you christians think it will be great to have here in the community, but Its been here for over two years and I haven't noticed anything noteworthy heppening in our town as a result of MC being here.

Well Shannon, maybe you can find out something about this when you go to class next. At least you wont be responsible for making people homeless in this town. The notice in the Kuca highrise lobby said Morthland College requested of the city planning commission that the current buildings either be torn down so Morthland can build a dorm or the current "indigent" tenants be evicted so they can use them as dormitories.

Doesn't sound too Christian if that's what Morthland's wanting to do. They want to throw out old, disabled and/or poor people so some "Christians" will have a dormatory. And since Morthland's non profit the city will get absolutely no benefit other than what you students spend here in town. Shame on them.

The notice also requested people go to the city council meeting Aug 7th to protest this.

Are you seriously telling me you are gullible enough ( or think we are) to believe this crap? A new college with a small (but growing) group of students is going to request the razing of any building so they can build dorms?! You do know where Morthland College is located, right? They are going to focus on kicking out low income residents or spend funds on building new dorms before they even have an adequate classroom building? GIVE ME A BREAK! This is nothing but troublemakers making up lies!
As far as nothing good coming from MC - brand new sports programs and the ability to bring Rich Herron out of retirement - those are GREAT things!

And as far as paying taxes - I honestly don't know but I believe that John A Logan and Rend Lake started small and look how they have added to their local communities.

Could be just someone wanting to stir up trouble, but I'd rather err on the side of caution as to wait till it is over and done with and a lot of people are homeless.

Stranger things have happened. Who would have believed Old Ben Coal could have filed bankruptcy on their retirees pensions and health benefits AFTER they retired, or TWA.... They probably thought the same thing. "Who would do such a thing?" Then it happened and no matter how much they protested outside the Federal Bankruptcy Court they lost everything. Now there are thousands of retired coal miners without income or health insurance... If you dont believe me, just google "bankruptcies on pensions" and see just how many companies are doing it.

Just saying to check it out and let the City know we wont tolerate it if they ever do even consider it.

Do you people realize that we PAY TAXES to RLC and Logan? I'm not sure about the not-for-profit status of Morthland, but I do know most schools not only do not pay taxes, but are supported by taxes. That's the big problem at SIU right now, the state is behind in payments to them.

Denning is not taxed, FIS is not taxed, FCHS is not taxed, St. John's is not taxed. The first 3 are actually run off of taxpayer monies.

So we can drop the tax issue...

Everyone complains about how wf has nothing and is too small but here we hve a college starting. Harvard had only 15 students starting out and now look at them. I'd rather have students living in that high rise than the low income people who can't a house on their own. Complain about wf brig small but don't help it grow. Stupid people

You're the one that's stupid! Hopefully one day you'll be old and/or disabled and have to live there. I do own my own home, no mortgage, but have relatives that are disabled and unable to take care of a house and yard. Obviously you have never owned your own home, so you have NO knowledge of how much it costs to upkeep a home. Property taxes, lawn mowers, gas for them. If you're disabled, you have to PAY someone to do this. Then you have repairs and maintenance... water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, refrigerator,,,, So yes, elderly, disabled people may not be able to afford a home anymore.

So what. We have a college that maybe in 10 years might be something. Even if it does become something, there will still be nothing to do because our city leaders are not actively trying to attract established business' to come here and open. The "good ol' boys" WANT the city to stay small and not grow like Benton and Marion. Face it, we're one of the only cities on a major interstate that has not grown!!!! Where are our truck stops, our Denny's restaurants, our Burger Kings, our major motels?????? Our city officials DO NOTHING to try and get them here. Look at Benton,, a SUPER WalMart, KFC, 2 nice motels, a KFC, Taco Bell, McDonalds, Arbys, Rural King and on and on. Marion has grown because Bob Butler ACTIVELY pursues new business' to come there. He dont sit on his butt waiting for them to come to him!

So let's all do the Christian thing and throw out our old, disabled people and people living below the poverty line so this "Christian college" can have those apartments for their "future" students. Just because someone cant afford to buy a house of their own doesnt mean they're worthless!

This town will never grow even if this college does unless we elect and get city officials in office who are willing to work and put forth the effort to make it grow.

Actually I do own my own home. I will apologize some people are old that need to love there but majority are people who are mentally unable to live on their own or can't afford their own house. Ic you can see your the only one really complaining on here ya I don't think they should just kick everyone out but I want to see the college grow. Btw I'm not stupid

I, and I'm sure others would also like the college to grow, but not at the expense of our elderly and/or disabled. If the college does grow, I'm sure it will not be staying across from the post office and next door to a bar. It will have to move to a larger area somewhere on the outskirts of town. Heck, we cant even figure out where to put a new high school if we could get one.

The reason I am complaining on here is I have a grandmother and an uncle who are both old AND disabled living in the Kuca high rise. They are both very upset and don't want to go into a nursing home if they were kicked out of the high rise. Seriously, where else could they go. They cant afford one of those fancy senior retirement centers in Marion or Anna and all their children and most of their grandchildren are here and see them almost daily. I also have friends who have relatives in both Kuca and the Anna Gray.

So what do you think we should do with our old and disabled that cant afford their own home? Nursing homes are extremely depressing to anyone that is still aware of their surroundings and the state is trying to shut down (or already has) group homes here in Southern Illinois for the mentally disabled.

Do I detect shades of "Soylent Green" in our future?

Obamacare will take care of them.

Sad when someone starts something like this about a good institution.
No truth whatsoever to the highrise rumor.
End of story.

I am a member of the Planning Commission and I was at the meeting mentioned in the flyer that was left at the Federal Housing. The information was inaccurate and designed to hide the truth. Morthland College nor the city or planning commission ever proposed tearing down or eliminating people at the Federal Housing for Morthland College. The city has no jurisdiction or control over Federal Housing.

The City is in the process of developing a city code for rental property only. The code has nothing to do with Federal Housing. The purpose of the code is to make sure that those who do not have much to spend for housing will have adequate living conditions in rental houses. It has been reported to the city that some of the rental houses these people are living in are unsafe and unsanitary with no way of getting these conditions corrected.

The flyer that was left at the Federal Housing was by a landlord who is against the city developing an ordinance that would require landlords to provide safe and sanitary property for those who do not have much to spend on housing. Being against the ordinance is being against the poor. The city is not against the poor but evidently this landlord is against the poor having a better quality of housing.

Thank you Advocate for clearing up things. My family (and many others) were worried when they saw this flyer. Who wants to move when you're old and disabled? I do hope you're filing some kind of charges against this landlord for malicious misinformation and for scaring the crap out of people.
