that annoying siren down at the west winfield fire hall is insane. In this day and age they have two-way-radios. Or pagers, you always see them wearing pagers and you would "never" see them without it on their belt. So how come we have to suffer like we're in the 1960s again with air raid sirens going off all the time? Hasn't technology evolved enough where we don't have to wake up at all hours of the night because some drunk moron hit a pole? I been considering going door to door with a petion to get people who also agree with me to take to the town mayor too remove the Fire Department siren. How many agree with me??

It is annoying until it blows for you, then you wonder why 5 minutes seems like it is taking 5 hours for the fire company to arrive to save your property or assist you or someone you love. The siren has been a fixture here for as long as I can remember, and that is a long time. It doesn't blow that often.go door to door with a petition and see how many actually will sign it for you,my guess is not many. Oh,by the way. The Mayor actually is a member of the fire company too,as are a few of the village board members. Good luck!

Hey Mr.HippieLOL,
I regret to inform you, that you can try, but I doubt that it'll do anything. As stated, the Mayor himself is a member of the West Winfield Fire Department. Also a few members of the town board. The Fire siren doesn't even go off that much, once a month to test and about 50 times a year for Fire calls. It doesn't ring for the 400+ EMS calls we average. It "rings" for 2 min cycles. If you can't get too bed after being woken for 2 min, you need to be checked out. Yes, we are given pagers and some get "2-way-radios". But technology fails and the Fire Siren is hooked up via hard line to the fire station. None of us are paid to do the service, we are all volunteer, so sorry bud, But I don't see the Fire Siren going away.

But why? We're in 2013. Why do we need to keep such outdated equipment? Do you guys still use horses to bring Firefighters to the fire? No? I didn't think so. I bet the area's property value would even go up too! With out that stupid thing blasting every time you go around. All its there is so everyone goes out too see all the "firefighters" run and drive fire trucks. You even have the 3 or 4 "Whackers" running red lights like lunatics throughout the town! Blowing through red lights, causing people to wreck. Its not even all volunteer! You guys have a paid person sit in the building all day doing nothing but sit on his butt. But the town has to pay for everyone who can put his name on a paper to go become a EMT. Why should my tax money go to someone just going to take it too another ambulance corps where we already keep a paid guy on for our town! Just a bunch of fat 40 year olds that never grew up when they dressed as a firefighter for halloween, get a real job!!
What a joke

Here is a better idea for you lolmrhippie72. Why don't you move if you don't like the siren. Better yet,if you think there is a bunch of "fat 40 year olds" at the fire station come on down and show us how intelligent you are and join the department. You won't do it because YOU DON'T GET PAID!!! It's all volunteer except 1 paramedic.chances are you don't even own property in the village nor do you pay taxes. Apparently you have a lot of free time on our hands, enough so that you could volunteer to do some good instead of being a whiner about a siren. The only way property value will go up around here is if some big businesses come into this area. Not by getting rid of a siren. And just when has there been a wreck from a dept member responding to a call?

I am not a member of the fire dept but appreciate the efforts these volunteers give to our community. When people come on here and start threads like this one ...talking about a volunteer fire and rescue dept in any town...... it clearly shows how ignorant they are and have nothing better to do with their time. Thank you to all those that volunteer to help our community...it seems to also go without saying...if you dont living near sierens...train tracks..airports...move to where you can be happy!

I agree, we've had pagers since the 80s. The argument that people might be out of cell range seems reasonable until you think about the fact that the people outside of cell range are very unlikely to be able to hear the town siren anyway. My dog gets terrified - when I first moved to a place next to the fire house she broke out of the fence and went all the way across town to my work! stressed, panting, shaking. Children cry, dogs bark, try living right next door and be woken at all hours. I do not feel any safer than if everyone had pagers. The people that like it, like the tradition. I am very glad to have the fire station and very much appreciate the volunteer fire department and everything they do but give them a pager please!

So the fire siren annoys you by waking you up. That is very sad. You have a great idea with going to just pagers because they ALWAYS work. People ALWAYS hear them or notice to vibration. The siren blows a few times a month. Suck it up! Try the annoyance or sleeplessness of getting up to the siren and being up for hours helping someone you don't know, someone who just yesterday was bad mouthing you or your department, someone who tomorrow will still not be satisfied. Spend time in class, training, and working. Worry about the future of the organization and this crappy town and worry about wether or not you are ALWAYS prepared to care for everyone any time. When you do that feel free to complain about the siren, otherwise deal with it. When it wakes your kids tell them how someone is selflessly going to help someone while you are age at home. Tell them how the firefighter leaves his or her family to help someone else's.

The electronic-speaker-type fire sirens, firstly, are not traditional. The electronic ones date from the 1980s or later. They put out an uber-loud dB sound that can be heard miles away. This is hardly the air whistles from the 1960s or before (which didn't have the range), nor are they the quaint fire bells of the past. The electronic sirens constitute a very egregious form of noise pollution. If you are at ALL concerned about public safety, you should realize or research what tiredness does to a person's safety. People who are awoken in the middle of the night, and are tired the next day, are more likely to get into an accident themselves. Yes, I realize that volunteers get awake to go the fire, but is an arrogant mindset that says "If I am up, you should be, too," meaning the whole community.
Volunteers are CHOOSING to be responders. There is NO need in this day for a siren. My town hasn't used one since the 1990s, and the volunteers use pagers. It is better than disturbing the whole town and surrounding countryside. And guess what? Pagers work!!!
Some people who responded to the OP are not at all compassionate or logical.

Blah blah blah blah blah. Logic? Compassion? The siren blows 30-50 times a year. How far did you have to reach for the "logic" of being tired after hearing the siren. lol. What about dogs cars trucks or any number of noises during the night. Really? Come on. For nearly 30 years I have been a volunteer firefighter. I / we have endured the foolishness that we are dealt by the people that we serve. We serve, yet those that we serve expect that they are allowed to put us down. I have news for those who think that. You may not like the siren. You may think money is spent foolishly. You may think that we have some arrogance about us or that we are just a bunch of idiots but, and this is my favorite part; you may not like me or my department but we are the very first ones you call for help and it just may be my smiling face looking down on you or a loved one in your time of need. You are welcome. Oh so satisfying.

These sirens are NOT necessary, and are hardly "traditional." They are late 20th century noise pollution. You did not even provide rationale why these sirens are needed. In this modern world with cell phones and pagers, even children and people living in the 3rd World jungles have electronic access. It is crazy to continue these sirens, except that some firefighters,(only some) like them for tradition. If you are being a firefighter because you care about other humans, then show it, and learn compassion. If you are doing this for some other reason (to feel important), then find something else to do with your time.

You make me laugh but you also make me angry. You are an example of what is killing this country. I am guessing from your rhetoric that you are a liberal democrat. Always preaching tolerance and compassion until someone disagrees with you but here it goes anyway. Yes we have pagers and yes there are cell phones however I personally do not carry mine 24-7. Pagers work most places. Most not all. They are dependent upon location and even weather as well as tower placement. Not satellites. We here in Winfield have rather good coverage but not perfect. Once again not everyone carries all of the time and even you should realize that it is unreasonable to expect every volunteer to be ready every minute of every day. We still have farmers who out of respect for the $550 per pager do not carry in the barn. I do not carry sometimes at work due to conditions but I hear the siren whether moving my yard or just sitting with family. It does serve a purpose even if not in your mind. As for cell phones, yes we do get text messages for each call however thanks to Verizon and other local carriers, messages can come anywhere from 1 minute to as much as a day later. Just because you don't like the siren is not justification to take it down. Because you believe you know better alternatives is not reason enough. You are likely not from here and are the kind to move to an area and try to mold it to your specs. No more spreading manure because we have commercial fertilizer. No more cows pastured because they moo. No more hunting because we have grocery stores. No more rednecks because you don't like country music. Don't be foolish. You don't like the siren then take it to the village board. I suggest you learn respect. Respect for those of us who sacrifice our time to help trash like you who bad mouth us. Time unpaid away from work time away from our families. You embody the liberal doctrine of pretend to be tolerant until someone disagrees then do anything necessary to ruin those who disagree. Do not EVER presume that you have any right to question my motives or those who stand with me and risk their lives and safety for fools like you who don't lift a finger but demand that we take care of you and your life when it spins out of your control. Again. You are welcome. Feel free to call. 911 anytime and we will do our best for you. Better hope the pagers work. Oh. Feel free to stop down and apply. If you really are as smart as you think perhaps you can right all the wrongs or perhaps you could actually be somewhat useful.

Oh and that's my last word on this. You are so smart that there is no need to contradict you. You are the kind that is never wrong I'm sure. You are not worth my time. I've wasted enough already. Between my 70 hour work week and the time I dedicate to this fire department I don't have the time or interest in your foolishness any more.

I am so sick and tired of volunteering my time, facing the same immediate dangers, the same long term dangers, and the same qualifications as a paid department only to have losers and assholes call us fat 40 year olds that never grew up. Screw you. When I enter a burning build in the fire does not let up because I am doing without compensation! I don't get a special pass on the long term effects of smoke and other airborne particulates that I may encounter! You stupid fools that criticize us and wallow in your arrogance. You don't deserve the protection that we provide to you without personal compensation. You have to nerve to criticize but also expect that we are obligated to respond while you sit on you useless ass and watch. Put yourself on the line. Volunteer. Risk your safety for another that you don't know without expectation or hope of reward. How dare you put us down only to rest in the assurance that we should come when you call. I dare you to take that chance. Identify yourself and pray that when you are known to those who you WILL rely on one day, will still come and help you or your loved ones. Stay brave behind your keyboard douchebag. Better yet keep your mouth shut about things you know nothing. People like you piss me off however I know your true cowardice and your true lack of worth.
