I warned people not to buy from Pet Plus!! But people just dont want to listen my husband I used to run Petland for Brian and Tim, then my family bought the store, but my family walked away from it in Nov of 2009! Due to feuds with business partner!! And the store went back to the Mohrfelds. I now for a fact they get their puppies from puppy mills, I have experienced it first hand!!! Please do not buy from them when are you people going to learn!! we all need to band together to get them shut down!! Please help with spreading the word!!!

Wow Karrie..... You've got a lot of nerve saying what you posted! Have you been in their store? I have, and will say that the staff there are so friendly. I was speaking with one about their puppies and breeders and came across a few questions that they were unable to answer. The response to me was that they were going to go talk to the owner to get the correct answer. And instead of them relaying the answer back to me, she personally came out to talk with me. I don't remember you ever doing that.... Their puppies along with all the other animals within the store look to be doing great and are happy. I SUPPORT PET PLUS AND HOPE ALL WHO READ THIS GIVE THE STORE A CHANCE! There is nothing wrong in doing so. They are going above and beyond in my, and others, eyes to do whats best for their animals. BEST OF LUCK PET PLUS!!!!

I agree with "Pet Plus Fan"!!!! And to clarify, Karrie, you were fired because you were stealing from the store... You didn't "walk away" And if you would like to get technical.... The loan was defaulted upon. The reason it defaulted is because the business wasn't bringing in enough income on the books... so rent was not paid, and the property manager CLOSED the doors in November because of that! The reason the store wasn't making enough money, well, that was because your husband and you were selling puppies through the store for your own profit... having customers write a check to you, or you taking their credit card info & running their card through your home business credit card machine... You say Petland had all these horrible secrets, when in fact, the people who were running it, YOU AND SCOTT, were the ones with all the secrets & lies!
PS- some REAL news!? Not trying to make the lives of those running this small business in west des moines hell. That store is providing people with jobs in this crappy economy.

I have been into Pet Plus and was not thrilled with what I saw. I went in just to look at the new store. What I came across was very rude and condescending employees. All the dogs looked very down, and were laying on their wire cages. None of the dogs had any blankets or pillows to lay on. When I walk into my local ARL all the dogs are up, waging their tails and have toys and a soft place to lay down. I do not and will not ever support that store or any puppy mills.

Pillows & blankets can not be 100% sanitized daily, and did you perhaps walk in to see the puppies during their nap times? Puppies are like babies... they sleep a lot. At the ARL you see grown dogs for the most part, they don't sleep as much as a puppy would.. Think about it, and I seriously DOUBT an employee was condescending unless you were being rude to them to begin with.

If you are set on buying a puppy please download and read,“How To Buy A Puppy” before you consider parting with your money. It is free at www.howtobuyapuppy.net

Buying a puppy without problems is harder than most people think. Finding a responsible and knowledgeable breeder is very difficult.

I bought our lab MIX from PetLand in another state almost 7 years ago. We have papers from this store stating that our lab is 100%yellow lab. You can look at him and know for a fact that he is lab mixed with hound. He has had a bladder problem from the beginning!! We could tell he was abused and not use to being outside of a cage. It was very sad that we brought home this puppy at 6months of age and he didn't act like a puppy at all!! I am glad we were able to save this dog and wouldn't trade him for anything but we will NEVER go back to any PetLand or stores like them for selling puppy mill dogs... It's insane that people are so careless. Investigate everything you can about where petstores are getting their puppies. This store lied to our faces about the puppy we purchased!! We learned our lesson. It's horrible that stores can get away with this!!

If you think this place is/was bad and being supported by a puppy mill you should check out Aqualand. I am honestly suprised that no one has made a huge deal about that place yet. Probably because it isn't a huge chain.
The last time I was in there they had four to five ferrets to a cage that was 12 x 12. Six Guinea pigs, rabbits etc in the same size cage. All with saw dust bedding which is notoriously bad for the respitory system of small animals. There was a snake tank that was cracked then taped with packing tape. Kittens housed in the front viewing window in the winter. I have also heard rumors about animals abuse there. Why is THAT place still open? Food for though

You Pets Plus fans must only be one thing to condone the crappy way they keep and treat animals. You are the backyard breeder/puppymill people they buy from. These idiots need to have their licenses pulled and doors shut and should NEVER EVER be allowed to have animals in their possession again. It is a disgusting practice they run and support and they should be charged for fraud as they are basically scamming people out of their money with their ridiculous high costs, and then the vet bills when these mistreated sick animals get sicker after they leave the mill they call a store. DO NOT EVER BUY OR SHOP FROM PETS PLUS! SHUT THESE AHOLE HEARTLESS PEOPLE DOWN!

I went to Pet Plus and the dogs all looked ill, lethargic none were up and walking around. These people have a history it sounds like of selling bad dogs. Hope the state vet intervenes. Oh and yes the employee was not friendly at all. I probably won't shop there.

Didn't anybody watch Animal Planet on Monday night ? The had an hour long program on Petland / Pet Plus and under cover footage of the puppy mills that supply the dogs to them across the Uninted States not just Des Moines. This is a National problem with this chain of stores and many others under different names. The Humane Society Of The Uninted States has a class action lawsuit against the chain of stores.
Plus their prices are outrageous...look in the paper and buy the same puppy for $250.00 that they have for $1250.00. Does that make any sense? I saw signs posted that the store even has payment plans, get real on a puppy? It is simalar to those buy here pay here car lots....WAY over priced. I visited the Des Moines store about 2 weeks ago as part of a college paper on puppymills. While there I asked about a Siberian Husky and the price,$1500.00 OMG are you kidding me? You can go to PuppyFind.com and buy a puppy from AKC Champion parents as a pet only for less than half of that. West Des Moines and the owners of Jordan Creek Mall need to step in and terminate the lease on this place as it directly affects on their precious image. WAKE UP PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!!

If you are a fan of Pet Plus or the Petland chain then you support puppy mills! It's real simple, if the public would STOP going into these stores and buying these puppies then these stores would not survive. It's about supply and demand.

There is no excuse for people to say they had no idea where these puppies are coming from. It's in the news constantly about puppy mills and their connection to pet stores. The puppy millers also advertise in the newspaper. So be very careful for the ones you see for sale in the paper. Iowa is the 3rd in the country for puppy mills. Wake up people, do your homework and stop supporting these places. When you do that you support the mass breeding of these dogs. Take it from someone that has rescued mill dogs and have seen mills in Iowa it is awful for these dogs. It needs to stop!!!

I appauld Dr. Jessica Merk, the vet, who came forward and spoke out about this. Good for her for contacting the State. The State should have been looking into this a long time ago. Let's see what they will do about it. I will be waiting and watching.

So far you're lucky that your dog is okay. The fact is you are supporting these puppy mills. I wish I could take you to where the parents of these dogs are kept and being bred. I think your eyes would be opened when you saw how they are living their lives....a breeding machine for profit!

Brian Mohrfeld is behind this store just like he was when Petland was open. He is a puppy miller/broker and has been in trouble for buying from unlicensed breeders....that's a fact and is on his USDA inspection report.

Guess maybe it's time that those concerned about puppy mills need to demonstrate against Pet Plus as we demonstrated against Petland and get this place shut down, too.

Please go to the rescure sheltors, all of my dogs have been from the shelters. Some dogs have been abused, others hve been left behind because their owner passed away. The people in the shelters will tell you of any problems, e.g. dog does not like children, needs lots of loving, etc. My Silky Terrior was in a puppy mill where she had 3 litters of puppies, was in a cage (not a kennel) 24/7. Then on to an abusive family, when they moved Marnie was left with no food or water after a couple of weeks she was rescued and I was fortunate to get her. It took a couple of months for her to realize men would not hurt her. She has been the love of our lives.

I have also heard that place smells nasty. My father took my kids there before they had a car crash into the front of their building and still to this day it isn't fixed. I fill sorry for the Highland Park area who are trying to revamp their neighborhood...

Not sure who owns Aqualand but it has all the earmarks of a small local business that is surviving just enough to pay the most critical bills like salaries but has no money for capital improvements. They just need to liquidate and call it quits.

I bought a bull terrier from the store when it was known as Petland. The only problem I had with my dog was kennel cough. Other than that I have had no problems with her. She's the best thing that I have ever purchased. I love her. The only thing was when I purchased her; the lady helping us was very rude and flew through the pamphlet. What really made me mad is that she wanted to purchase my dog, but I came in and got her first. She even told me that. I was very shocking and rude. I really don't know what to think about the new store. I just hope the puppies are healthy and are not coming from puppy mills.
