So who are you voting for and why? This race has generated all kinds of interest across the San Gabriel Valley so it would be interesting to get some input from residents. Judging from the downtown improvements West Covina is really cleaning up. Good for you.

P.S. the so called local papers like the Pasadena Star News and SGV Tribune are liberal outsider tabloids that have nothing to do with our community so disregard them entirely. They are run by a media mogul in Denver who has never heard of West Covina or the San Gabriel Valley. Stick with the LA Times. FYI:

If the Los Angeles Media Group wants more subscribers maybe they should make our papers more like their San Fernando Valley paper.

This paper has a lot of useful information for the area it covers not just generic tabloid headlines.

Voting for Steve Herfert and Karin Armbrust. Roger Hernandez is a nutcase as you can see lately with his domestic violence and harassment claims against him.

Thanks for the response. Regarding current councilman Roger Hernandez who is up for re-election, he looks qualified reading his bio. He also appears to be the only Hispanic on the West Covina city council in a city that is half Hispanic.

Funny that the current mayor is urging him to resign and that he is being written up by the Los Angeles Media Group right before the election.

Anything is possible in politics.

Let's see how the city votes.

Yeah, Hernandez looks qualified. Too bad he doesn't act professional. I can't beleive he is calling the City staff, the City Manager and Police Department liars. How can the rest of the City Council and entire City Hall be against him? There must be some truth to the accusations against Hernandez. But, everyone can make up their own mind. I would seriously consider or research the facts.

City officials under fire for trip to China (no, not Irvine...)

By Christina L. Esparza Staff Writer
San Gabriel Valley Tribune
7/27/06

WEST COVINA - Two councilmen returned from a taxpayer-funded trip to China this week, prompting criticism from a colleague who claims he and the public were left in the dark.

Councilman Mike Touhey - who traveled with Mayor Steve Herfert on the five-day trip - said he kept the excursion quiet for the home and family's safety and fully disclosed the details of his visit when he returned Tuesday.

The two were part of a 20-member delegation to Shanghai led by the Southern California Association of Governments to study Maglev, a high-speed train that can travel 20 miles in eight minutes, Towhee said.

Touhey told the city manager and staff to keep his whereabouts private until he got back. Councilman Roger Hernandez said he asked if his colleagues were on a trip on official city business and staff and City Manager Andrew Pasmant refused to provide details.

"I believe it would be irresponsible to put council members and their families and their property at risk," Pasmant wrote in an e-mail to Hern ndez.

Instructing the staff to keep the trip under wraps, Hernandez argued, may violate a voter-approved ordinance that states: "The city manager shall take his orders and instructions from the city council only when sitting in a duly held meeting of the city council and no individual councilman shall give any orders of instruction to the city manager."

"This is like a spouse not telling their partner that they're off to Europe on family business," Hernandez said. "Last I checked, this is a five-member council, but once again, my colleagues continue to behave like it's a four-member deal."

However, Touhey said, he and Herfert - who did not return phone calls seeking comment - were not required to disclose their whereabouts under state law until they got back.

"I don't publicize when my home is vacant," Touhey said. "Roger is \... bachelor, and I have a wife and kids. I have to protect my wife and kids."

Pasmant said he did not have the specifics of the trip while the pair was away, and anyway would not have given them out for security reasons.

He said he had firsthand knowledge of how people can take advantage of an empty home, and the security and privacy of the council members and their families are a prime concern.

"Who has the right to know and security is the reason I felt it was paramount ... to protect individuals' right and their families," Pasmant said.

Hernandez contends an official city trip kept from other council members is highly unusual, since the members are informed of them weekly.

SCAG paid for Herfert's trip. Touhey, who stayed for five extra days on his own, said he paid upfront for his trip and expects to be reimbursed by the West Covina Community Development Commission.

Touhey estimated the cost of the trip at between $2,100 and $2,400. He said he does not know how much he will be reimbursed.

In Baldwin Park, Councilman David Olivas said each council member knows when colleagues go on a trip to a conference or other city-related event out of town.

"Any city trips are public records and council members are informed in the city of Baldwin Park of such trips," Olivas said.

If in fact he was reimbursed by the West Covina Community Development Commission, can anyone get an answer as to what exactly the current mayor did for 5 days alone over there in China. Has anyone ever asked him?

By the way, here is another recent front page headline by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune/ Pasadena Star News/ Whittier Daily News, which is owned by the LA Media Group and not to be confused with the Chicago Tribune.

Since they have no real ties to our local community they don't understand that catering to the homeless is not a priority for the San Gabriel Valley. We are not Denver or Oakland.

There is nothing wrong with helping people who fall on hard times but the LA Media Group appears to be encouraging homeless to come from Skid Row to the San Gabriel Valley in almost every other article. Not smart if they want people to buy their papers.

Just stick with the LA Times and local blogs for now. Better yet how about a new local newspaper?

It is sad to see how many people are given abridged (bent) versions of,“so called ”, truths, and are instantly converted to the belief that what is printed must be true. Jim Jones could not ask for a better flock to come drink a little punch and join him in a bit of mass suicide… Remember few articles in the paper are devoid of the writer’s opinion, and the readers are not privy to the writer’s motivation. Additionally, writers’ are not required to include all of the facts, much like reporters, who take an interview, and piece it together how they see fit.
It’s time to wake up! Word for the day, due diligence:“The degree of care that a prudent person would exercise.” Everyone should learn the meaning of this word, put it into practice to obtain the unabridged facts, and then formulate a solid opinion!

WCR1, here are two words for you
1. Claims root word “Claim”: An assertion that something is true, unsupported by evidence or proof.”
2. Conjecture:“The formation of judgment or opinions on the basis of incomplete or inconclusive information”

You called Roger Hernandez a nutcase, could it be because he is the minority on the council, Hispanic, against your special interests, or the only member of West Covina’s city council who has the people’s (best) interest truly at heart! Have you ever viewed a council meeting or attended a council meeting? Candidates used “Integrity” as a key word during this recent campaign, here is the meaning:“The quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards”, which should be paramount for any civil servant. I urge you to view prior council meetings (online), see who truly is serving our community, who lacks integrity, and who is serving their own personal interest. We have been lied to by West Covina’s council member’s “ruling majority”, they lack honor, and Integrity, view it for yourself then try to rebut the facts.

Unfortunately, I am not as grand as Councilman Elect Roger Hernandez, so this last piece below is my opinion!

WRC1, your surmise has been weighed and you have been found wanting.

I have been to several City Council meetings and know several staff and council members personally. Roger is loose cannon. West Covina is worse off with him remaining in office. I am Hispanic so this is not a race issue. Roger needs to learn to bite his tongue and act professional. There is a reason why trouble follows him... Roger is unethical and lacks integrity. And no he is not qualified. Ask him if he actually graduated fom college or ever held a real job.

Valid posts WRC5 and West Covina Resident 31.

Looking at the whole picture however it is fair to say that the LA media group did try to influence the outcome of this election and possibly others. They put up hit piece after hit piece mixing unverifiable and verifiable information together as well as adding a lot of innuendo about Hernandez days before the election. That would turn almost any candidate into a loose cannon. Why weren't there any documented stories about Hernandez's bad tendencies until right before the election?

Just an observation, after the election the LA media group seemed to put up a lot of celebratory articles for every Hispanic that lost in an election as was the case with the water district candidates. Bringing up race is not easy as it is used as a crutch so often but it appears these papers don't like Hispanics.

The only guess is since this group of newspapers is affiliated with the Associated Press they don’t like conservative values or Hispanics who tend to have conservative values.

Ever notice when the LA media group runs a crime story involving Hispanics they always seem to mention race or tend to use their names. However, when it is a non Hispanic suspect or when it is a Hispanic victim they rarely mention race. This happens to Whites as well but they get it from newspapers and TV news.

Another example, these papers are not reporting on the "Sock on Mexican" violence occurring in Pasadena as it appears they favor one group over another. It's really bad over there to the point the police and city hall won't address the situation in public for fear of being labeled racists by the local newspapers. To be fair, there are some instances where the violence is going the other way so keeping it hidden isn't helping anyone.

It is hard to comprehend what the LA media group’s motivations are. What is obvious is that none of these generic newspapers is a professional operation as they subtly try to inject their opinions into their news reporting. Kind of like CNN and Fox News -no credibility.

One bit of advice, in a city with demographics like West Covina don't have more than one strong Hispanic candidate on the ballot next election or the votes will be split to a point where none of them have enough votes to win. And if the candidates are weak don't put them up for election.

In reality, just vote for a good candidate regardless of race. The current council is doing a good job. They are all talented and are looking out for West Covina in their own unique way.

I thought this was funny, no big deal so don't loose any sleep. Has anyone noticed that KCBS and KCAL news, TV channels 2 and 9, no longer mention or map any San Gabriel Valley cities in their weather reports? I'm not sure if their traffic is the same way.

When they show the weather maps they zoom from the San Fernando Valley to the Inland Empire to parts of the OC and then skip back over to Ventura County and Santa Barbara? That's not even near LA. There is never a city mapped or mentioned from the San Gabriel Valley. Well maybe Pasadena occasionally.

It's as if they go to great lengths to ignore the San Gabriel Valley. What are their producers trying to say? Considering we are half their audience don't we deserve to be on the radar screen?

The reason why the folks at city hall lie is because they don't want to lose their JOBS. With a four-person majority, they're scared to death. Roger is the highest-qualified candidate and that domestic violence thing was B.S. if you bother to pay attention. If you mean he's a "loose canon" as in going against the grain and not becoming yet another yesman, then yeah. That's who I want in office!!! Oh, this may be a little late but ROGER HERNANDEZ WON!!
