(Richland County) December 17, 2006 - A late-night wreck on I-20 Saturday night left two people dead after police believe their SUV was rear-ended and ran off the road. Authorities say 56-year old Mary Godwin was driving eastbound on I-20 when the accident happened at approximately 12:15am.
It is believed that Tonya Orear, of West Columbia, was exceeding the speed limit and rear-ended Godwin's Ford Escort, causing it to run off the road. Godwin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene. Her passenger, 51-year-old Dario Lasano, also died on the scene. Neither Orear or another passenger in Godwin's SUV were injured. The accident is still under investigation, and police are waiting on pending alcohol tests.(END of story reported)
I could find no update on this wreck or whether Ms. Orear was charged and/or results of pending alcohol tests. 2 people died, seems it would be worth a follow up story.
