I bet you $20 that the majority of this money is going into local elected officials' pockets and not being spent on the roads.

Gallipolis used to be a place to go shopping when I was a kid. You had stores all over downtown. Then the stores left and people stopped shopping in downtown. I can't tell you the last time I went to downtown Gallipolis. The closest I ever make it to downtown now is to Walmart.

Sounds like just another taxation without representation scheme to me to line the pockets of those in government.

I am sure Meigs county and Vinton county are eyeing this scheme closely.

The town's population is right around 4000 people, give or take.

Assuming even 3/4 of thes people own a car, which I doubt, this translates into $5.00x3000=15,000.

Has anyone checked the price of asphalt? Plus the labor and operating costs of prepping the road and applying it?

Here's a quote from the comments on the daily tribune site:
On 1/20/2004, the Gallipolis City Commissioners passed Ordinance 2004-01. It created levy 187.01 that imposed a annual license tax of $5.00 per motor vehicle registered in the municipal corporation limits of Gallipolis.
On 4/17/2007, the Gallipolis City Commissioners passed Ordinances 2007-13 and 2007-14. Each Ordinance created levy 187.02 that imposed a annual license tax of $5.00 per motor vehicle registered in the municipal corpoation limits of Gallipolis. For a total levy of $10.00 additional dollars.
This bring the total to $15.00 additional taxes within the last 6 years.
Where has the money gone. Each time the commissioners said it would be set aside.
