It is official: Tom O'Brien has been appointed to the position of Plymouth County Treasurer. He will stand for election in 2008. The commissioners could have chosen to simply appoint someone without a public search. Three of seven applicants were invited to a
public hearing of their credentials. One commissioner
objected to the short period of public search (6 calendar days), but abstained from voting against the
public search. Instead, he chose to make a big to-do
about it in the public press without an appreciation of what would happen if the treasurer's office had been vacant 24 hours: the assistant treasurer would get the job by default and the county commissioners would have lost their opportunity to screen and interview applicants who might have even better credentials. Although the official public search period was short, three of those familiar with the workings of the county had applied
before the vacancy was publicly announced.

County Commissioner candidate Bob Sullivan thinks the newspaper articles about WATD Radios Candidate Debate Forum last week ("McMullen Defends his Record") favored incumbent Commissioner McMullen and did not mention key issues they debated that are less The article did mention that Senator Murray was NOT supporting McMullen. The debate also mentioned State Representative Tom O'Brien and Senator Creedon (Brockton) were NOT supporting McMullen. Brockton state delegate Paul "Red" Sullivan is NOT supporting McMullen. Fellow Commissioners Welch & Riordan are NOT supporting McMullen.
Bob and Lisa criticized McMullen for mailing a letter and starting media stories criticizing Chairman Welch over McMullen's attempts to block Rep. Tom O'Brien's appointment to Treasurer. Thank you to the Ledger for publishing former Treasurer McLellan's letter criticizing McMullen's protest as a "discredit to the county and your (McMullen's) campaign."
Speaking of McMullen mailings, remember McMullen's famous letter 2 years ago that criticized fellow Commissioners and resulted in long time Brockton politician Peter Asiaf's losing his Commissioner's seat? Asiaf is not supporting McMullen. Can you imagine your Selectman sending a letter to voters criticizing another Selectman? Never. Work against him quietly? Sure. Publicly? Maybe. But a letter to voters? Never. Watch your mailbox this week for more McMullen SPIN MAIL saying whatever he needs to try to get re-elected.
During last week's debate, the two challengers, Bob and Lisa Clark, discussed some of McMullen's difficulties reported previously in newspapers but not in the Forum article.
McMullen was asked about approving Charlie Lincolns famous $140,000 pension. Tim first said the approval was before he was Commissioner but Tim was elected in 2002 and Lincoln retired in 2003.
But Tim admitted that he signed off on Lincoln while blaming his Executive Secretary for not checking it first. Throw the assistant under the bus. Save his own skin. McMullen's admission he signed off on Lincoln's double dip pension scam is supported by county documents bearing McMullen's signature, a historic violation of the taxpayers trust.
Tim said he led the health insurance fund to a surplus but there is no data to support that claim since the FY06 outside audit has not been completed. In fact, the only available data from the County Commissioner's office, the fund's cash basis, shows the fund is $500,000 IN DEBT. McMullen's figures are the "trying to get re-elected" political SPIN.
They discussed the contractor who won the health insurance bid DONATES money to Tims campaign. That is why McMullen pushed for a bid process so his friend could get the bid. But the bid process is now under State investigation for alleged involvement by the contractor, McMullen's friend, in the bid process. Bob and Lisa both pledged not to take campaign donations from county contractors. Tim refused to make such a pledge.
In his first campaign, McMullen promised not to sell the County Farm to developers. During the Forum, McMullen said many people want it sold. But many people do not, Commissioner. The top reason Bob is running is because it is well known that McMullen has participated in discussions regarding building a Government Center there.
When asked who they were supporting for Governor, McMullen followed their answers by saying he too was undecided. Tim printed Devals T-shirts and was selling them at the Democratic Convention. That's how McMullen supports his friends running for Governor - "I'm undecided". Throw Deval under the bus. Save his own skin. See a TREND?
Bob's family voted for Tim four years ago and held his sign. Unfortunately McMullen has let us down and has to defend his record. Some have said Bob is a one issue candidate to protect the Farm. Bob is running to return integrity and accountability to the Commissioners position.
Please vote this Tuesday.
