I wouldn't rush to judgment here.

Its no secret that Browning/SLA leave a lot to be desired--which is clearly the case given current enrollment. Everything from the facilities to the curriculum need to scrapped and completely rebuilt, and simply being a Christian institution doesn't excuse this lack of excellence. However, I think people are letting SLA's sub-par academic and institutional status reflect negatively on Bob Malin.

People who know the Malins don't buy this accusation. It just doesn't add up. Maybe I am wrong, but I am giving Bob the benefit of a doubt unless and until these accusations are proven.

The sister school next door Atlantic Union College for the past 4 years has been covering up a sexual predator. The Predator was discovered to have had a long history of over 40 years of sexual molesting minors and sexually harrasing young adults.

This is a school that teaches what Jesus taught...intolerance? Don't ever send your kids to a catholic school. They will be messed up the rest of their lives...

It looks like the school has lost it's “righteous mission”. A fundamental Christian education built on solid morals and academics. The school should be producing “top-notch” citizens that are actively and genuinely involved in their community, are passionate to help anyone in need and are ultra-high achievers.
I’m told most of the talented teachers are now gone. The school is largely populated by lazy, mediocre, non-committed staff that are simply putting in there time. They seem preoccupied with nonsensical “rules” that make no academic or long-term moral difference at all and are producing students that are largely “reclusive” and have no capacity to span cultural gaps between their “ultra-conservative-religion” and general society. For all the school’s “superiority” attitude and “truth” posturing they seem to have very little to back up this facade these days…what a tragedy.
This Bob Malin there are thousand of people like him and they all seem to gravitate toward these “institutions” that would rather cover up than face the music. He did his school no favors through his behavior/lapse in judgment. However, it wreaks of religious and legalistic oppression and is a symptom of a much greater problem that the school has probably been facing for years.
Enrollment is down due to negative feelings parents have toward both teachers and administration. Parents aren’t excited about the level of education their children are receiving, and both the staff and administrations seem largely unconcerned with the overall dissatisfaction.
The religion pressures parents into thinking that by not paying for and providing their children a “righteous” Seventh-day-Adventist education that they are somehow playing Russian roulette with their children’s eternal souls. Sounds a lot like brainwashing and pyramid marketing.

I have attended Adventist schools most of my life and actually graduated from South Lancaster Academy in 2001. I'm sure things at the school are much different now than they used to be, but I'd like to say that the teachers I had were nothing short of amazing. I'm not trying to justify what happened with Bob Malin. He is a sick person and he had no right to do what he did, but people that have never been a student at SLA have no right to say that it's a bad school. The heart of it is good, but corruption is everywhere. I now work for the Seventh-day Adventist church and deal with sexual abuse problems within the denomination on a daily basis. I would be lying if I said that the things I deal with at work don't test my faith in the church. They do so on a daily basis, but at the end of the day you have to know that people corrupt the church, it's not the other way around. If you're letting something like this alter your view of the church community, that's fine...but if you let it alter your view of faith itself, you are focused on the wrong thing.

I agree with what the Former Student said about focusing on the wrong thing. This is, however a discussion about the inappropriate conduct of a teacher, the incident, and how it was handled or mishandled. It shouldn't be about the religion. I'm fairly certain there is no place in the SDA religious creed or doctrine that would allow this type of behavior nor condone it.

That being said...it disturbs me greatly that we actually have someone in our religion that can justify a full-time job that deals with these situations on a daily basis! This is a real eye-opener to me!!!

I was also a student many years ago at SLA and it was a solid school back then. I owe much of my current success/fortune to this school and the teachers of that day. This is unfortunately a mark on the institution. It shouldn't reflect on the faith or religion.

It seems as of late – the school doesn’t exactly go out and hire the BEST of the BEST teachers - sometime we are fortunate to get people that really care and can make a difference. It seems as of late it's a hit or miss. Sometimes I think they make the decisions like this: Are you an SDA? Do you have a heart beat? And you know so and so? Well that settles it -- I've heard you are nice....you're in!

SDA institutions have become riddled with politics and dishonesty…not malicious dishonesty…but more like a child’s dishonesty…a 2 year-old testing their parents knowledge not realizing that their argument is both flawed and obvious. They also have become safe havens for under-achievers in general from an administration level. This wasn't the case when I went to school there. We had teachers that did multiple jobs and taught multiple subjects…and their day didn’t end at 3PM..they stayed after daily and participated nightly and even over the weekend – all to make a real difference. They were achievers and fostered excellence. What a mess today the school is in comparison.

I have personally had almost the EXACT experience to Academic Observer - with my own children - they no longer attend a school that I loved and had so many good memories. I do however part ways with Academic Observer on the religious suppression idea. I would rather liken it to blind people trying to find their way, stumbling along obvious and non-menacing paths that should pose no serious threats to someone who had ANY level of common sense.

I know good people that still struggle with the school today and feel they can make a difference and change the institution back to it's former glory days. At first I felt guilty because I didn't want my children to have to suffer this transition.

My children go to public school now and their attitudes have completely been revitalized toward learning. We still have worship daily and I actually believe it's a better mix. I pulled my children out because I had a falling out with the administration -- they would not admit to wrong doing even though it was non-disputable. I’m done catering to small minded people. This situation is just another symptom of the same problem I dealt with for years and I’ll leave it at that.

The school (Administration) does not put the needs and best interests of the children ahead of their own. This is why the school is weak, this is why the parents are unsatisfied and this is why they fail.

You have no right to say that SLA is Full of under Achievers and that the teachers dont do their parts. We have teachers that are dedicated to God and to the School. The Enrollment at SLA has doubled this year. our teachers work hard and each teacher has a multiple part to play. SLA isnt perfect and neither is any other school. SLA is changing too and for the better. People have no right to say bad things about MY school OR the People in it especially if they ever went there and arnt there now WHAT DO YOU KNOW. And as far as Im conserned that whole thing about Bob Malin is Junk. Any one that knows him knows that the exact oppisite is true. I am now a Junior and have been in browning and SLA since Kindergarden, So when people talk TRASH about My School I take it personally.
