Timothy E. Monahan Sr., of 1379 North Main St., Lancaster, is charged with three counts of statutory rape of a child.
The alleged sexual assaults took place in the bathroom of Monahanís home in September 1994. According to court documents, he had oral sex twice and sexual intercourse with a girl younger than 13.
Monahan, a former police officer in Lancaster and Leominster, was released on personal recognizance, with his case continued to April 6.
Judge Martha Brennan ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim or with children younger than 16, and to surrender all travel documents.
His case was assigned to Clinton lawyer Edward M. Sheridan Monday.
Lancaster Police Chief Kevin Lamb said Monahan was a reserve officer in Lancaster for about 18 months, starting in 1978, and then became a full-time officer in Leominster. He is not listed on the current Leominster Police Department roster. No information was available about when he resigned or retired.
