How about the INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY as a top tourist destination?
I do agree that Holiday World is a great theme park (it's come a long way since the 60's).

Indiana Beach (where Redneck American goes to bathe) is NOT a tourist attraction. It's a tourist repellent.
Try touting some places that might actually be enjoyable, like Brown County and Nashville.
I guess to each his/her own, but come on...Indiana Beach? Seriously?
I agree-Indiana Beach is nasty, and quite boring.. I would have recommended Spring Mill and Brown County-but my comp. does not have java :(

I didn't even know about the contest so I didn't vote, but it wouldn't surprise me. This reads as a list of the top places that state wants to promote. Holiday World I can see, but Parke and Brown Counties each probably get more visitors than the other two combined.

Our state parks never get the respect they deserve from state government. Well loved by residents, but neglected by our government.

It is a departure destination. And when I take my next vacation trip to St. Lucia, I'll be glad to wave good-bye and not let any door hit me in the butt. A week away from Indiana is more priceless than anything Mastercard could dream up.
And yet you still live in Indiana, right? Well played!

Our family has gone there numerous times. Love It! Best amusement park - period! Better than 6 flags, disney, kings island, etc. The park and the campground are clean, friendly and have a lot to offer.
Best amusement park ??? I can tell you have never been to Cedar Point. That place makes any park in the midwest look like a dump and a joke. The Top Thrill dragster is just nuts, the Millenium force is awesome and the Maverick and Raptor which would rate at #3 and #4, would be the best rides at any park in the midwest.

Pretty sad, really - but as a tourist attraction, Indiana is pretty much a departure destination, as was said earlier. People will come to Indiana for sporting events, and they even come to Indiana for cultural events (I know people who come from Chicago for symphony on the prairie), but the natural beauty that Indiana used to have was chopped down about 100 years ago and hasn't really been replaced.

Our family just got back from camping / Holiday World last Friday. It was a blast! The Voyage was a little rough for me, though.(I must be getting old.) The kids loved it, however. Holiday World now has a delicious restaurant in Thanksgivingland. I kid you not - I ate fried chicken, corn-on-the-cob, and mashed potatoes. A family of 4 ate at that restaurant for just $21.00. Of course, the soft drinks are always free...nice. We had loads of fun in Splashin' Safari, especially on the Bakuli. I like Holiday World even better than Kings Island.

I agree with you! Sure it's nice to go abroad once in awhile, but for those who like frequent weekend trips that are easy on the wallet, our state parks rock! Not to mention Hoosier National Forest, the awesome Ohio,(the view from the city bridges do it no justice), and the Wabash suit us just fine! We have some great caves, too.

Indiana Beach???? Eeeeew! Be sure to take hydrogen peroxide to pour in the kids' ears when you leave.
Indiana Beach and Holiday World are two different parks. Holiday World is very clean my kids went a few years ago and loved it. Free refills on sodas!

My friends and I love Holiday World... we're willing to drive 3 hours to go there. Kings Island and Kentucky Kingdom are closer, but Holiday World is so fun, cheap, clean, and friendly. The rides are seriously a blast. We love the state parks too, especially Spring Mill!

Also- I never want to go to Indiana Beach after reading these comments...

You misunderstood my comment. The wasted real estate reference was regards to land used for steel mills. I love the dunes too!

It sure beats swimming at Indiana Beach.
Wasted real estate? I suppose you would have wanted another steel mill or NIPSCO generating plant. There was no other real estate option when the park was set aside, it was either save the beach or destroy it.

We just returned from vacation which included a visit to Holiday World. I heartily concur that Holiday World deserves high praise for the quality of the park, its cleanliness, the friendliness of the staff, and the high quality of its ownership-management. As children, my brother and I visited "Santa Claus Land" in 1961 with our parents. Mom still has the photo of St. Nick with a 4 year old and 3 year old boy. Now as a husband and father of an 8 year old and 4 year old, we have continued that family tradition by visiting Holiday World and Splashin' Safari each year. With the Indianapolis 500, Brown County in the Fall, and the Old Oaken Bucket game between Purdue and IU, a visit to Holiday World is a "must do" for anyone in Indiana (and beyond).

You're darn right it was a scam! follow this link and you can see the PR person asking friends of the park to vote for the park, multiple times:

Nothing like shameless self promotion, like when she bragged to a local paper about how well their lifeguards reacted when the lady died in their wavepool. Holiday World is the most two-faced business entities in the state

What's with the weird pricing scheme at Indiana Beach? They have two "ride sessions", and then, you have to pay EXTRA to go on some rides! Why not just do it the right way, like Holiday World (and all the other theme parks); charge one price, have people ride whatever they want all day. We went to Indiana Beach years ago, learned about the crappy pricing ripoff scheme, and have never been back.

Holiday World, on the other hand, has free soft drinks (SUCH a smart idea - nobody dehydrates and passes out!), free sunblock, and the place really is immaculate and friendly - everything you've heard about that is true. If you're presented the choice (IB or HW), go to Holiday World!

That was not right, she had a physical defect and collapsed, it had nothing to do with the park....not a very good try at being funny.
