GM, Chrysler say slashing dealerships necessary

The chiefs of General Motors and Chrysler told skeptical lawmakers on Wednesday they have too many dealers to support their slimmed down operations and sacrifices must be shared as they fight to overcome bankruptcy and survive.

This is nothing more than Obama attacking white middle-classness and capitalism. Dealerships do not cost the auto companies any money ... in fact, just the opposite. You need to build more cars to stock a larger number of showrooms. I've heard dealerships who are republican donors are the ones most affected by the closings. We need an investigation into this, but with democrats in charge of everything now, that will not happen.

A manufacturer is better off with a dealer that sells & promotes their products rather than one that offers a wide range and lets the customer pick which brand they want.

Too many dealers in an area erode the price levels & the more they lower the profits, the worse for the manufacturer as larger dealers pressure more & more for price cuts & more incentives.

Look at Fitzgerald. They have multiple dealerships icluding GM. When a buyer shows up, do they try to sell that GM? Or do they just want to sell a car, any car.

I had the opportunity to distruiubte my products through a large company with sales offices up & down the East Coast. When their salesman got an inquiry for the product we offer, they merely responded that they could offer this from 4 different manufacturers at the following prices. There was no true sales effort, no push to explain the differences but merely a menu.

We dropped them & opted for a series of smaller locaized vendors that actually promoted our products exclusively. We might get less exposure but the sales rate was higher & profit margin better.

Really? Is that what you heard?

Here's who can investigate this - YOU. Spend a little time on the internet and you can discover that the bogus allegation that the government is somehow discriminating against Republican donors has been debunked.

Turns out, over 80% of car dealers donate to Republicans. So the ones chosen to be closed are simply statistically more likely to have been Republican donors. No conspiracy. No nefarious scheme. Simple odds based on the fact that car dealers overall tend to be Republican rather than Democratic donors.

He is only one of many that would be advising the President on the auto industry. What is behind this dealer-cutting, job-cutting strategy? An Associated Press report said,“While GM doesn’t own the dealers, the company says its network is too big, causing dealers to compete with each other and giving shoppers too much leverage to talk down prices and hurt future sales.”

Pardon me! Dealers are forced to compete? I thought this was the free enterprise society. More importantly, how does this philosophy affect you?

There are plenty reasons to close some dealerships. Just because you have no clue doesn't mean that there is some hidden conspiracy.

Would any of these creditors made out any better in a bankrupcy court 1 year ago? Doubtful. The union is an important key to GM's future. Now that the union has a stake, don't you think that is better for the future? having employees own a stake inthe company is always a good way to get workers more interested in profitability & the overall good of the company.

Why does a worker have to be a member of a union or part owner of the company to be interested in doing an honest days work for reasonable pay?
