Here we go again, elections for another Elko County Sheriff. Personally, I think Neil Harris should stay for as long as he can or wants to. If it ain't broke don't fix it. It's great that so many show an interest for the highest law enforcement office in our nation. For those that are unaware of what that really means try to understand that the Sheriff is the only elected law enforcement officer in our entire country. All others, all, are either hired or appointed - not elected. In addition, each Sheriff has absolute control and power over all law enforcement activities conducted in the counties to which they preside. All other law enforcement agencies outside of the Sheriff's Dept. operate within the Sheriff's territory at his discretion. Many have, for along time, operated free-gratis. How rude. The public, for the most part is, or has been, unaware of how this factor of law enforcement works. The Sheriff, by being an elected official in conjunction with law enforcement, is bound to the Provost Marshal Law within the U.S. Constitution. I do not believe that anyone without any law enforcement training, background, education or experience should ever run for this office...there are just way too many responsibilities to entrust to someone without it. There are a few who are running in this next election that have very questionable backgrounds in regards to their activities during their duties as current and former law enforcement officers. They do not have a good public repore and have not shown good, sound, logical and rational judgement when making decisions concerning the rights of individuals. They are public servants first and foremost and when they place themselves beyond this foundation of their job then they become a problem. They citizens loose their faith, trust and respect, not only for that officer, but, for the other officers also. This mars the reputation, functionality and effectiveness of the entire department. A Deputy-Sheriff is an extension of the Sheriff - they are a representative of that Sheriff. The way they conduct themselves when performing their duties is a direct reflection of the Sheriff and too the entire department. I would also like to include that those who have problems with the BLM, Bureau of Land Management, going around the State of Nevada with their self-annointed authority to do what ever they want because they are a government agency only have to remember what I have stated here. They do not have the authority to over-ride the Sheriff. Therefore, please understand this very well, the Sheriff can stop them dead in their tracks. Oh yes. In conclusion, this next election will prove to be an interesting one and I don't believe that some of those who are running are doing themselves any favors by throwing about dirty laundry in an effort to make themselves look good. This is poor politics and we've had enough of that. Keep it clean...speak for yourself...prove what you say.
