Wow someone at the paper needs a spell checker. "Faulsy" should be "falsely" and a couple other words stick right out. Does the Gazette have an editor that ok's articles AND proofreads them?

It would appear not. I can't even open that paper any longer without being assaulted by misspellings and stunning grammatical errors. I don't even bother picking it up anymore.

Not a teacher - my daughter's teachers have similar problems despite their training and position - granted "might could" is a regional terminology from the past it also reflects a lack of education. No one in Salem MA uses "thee" any longer as it's an outdated usage of old English just as "might could" and "used t' could" and other terminologies are outdated and incorrect uses of old immigrant uses of English. Anyway...the people at media outlets such as radio, newspapers and television are supposed to be professionals in journalism and should self-police their writings and broadcasts before release to their audiences. I have to disagree that this area is illiterate but the local newspaper doesn't help to remove that stigma of illiteracy when they release drivel like this. There are always people in an area that either gave up on education or actually had problems learning but they are such a small percentage of the overall population and those that hold a low educational level shouldn't be involved in the news industry. My mother-in-law could be classed as illiterate and likely is but she grew up in an area in TN that didn't hold education as a much needed skill for women and in an era when a woman that married and became a full time mother, instead of waiting until completion and graduation, was looked upon and normal and proper. She was able to legally leave school before completion of 8th grade. She has not seen the need to further her education despite the changes in attitude over the years and now that she's a senior citizen in her 70's she has to depend on her government benefits to cover her living expenses with no other education or skills to fall back on for part time work or the ability to use skills to open her own business. I know many other people from all age groups that don't feel education is all that important yet they feel bad when employment prospects don't hire them or wen they interact with others they are treated like children and spoken down to. Your education is part of what makes your image of yourself to others and part of that first impression. While not a big deal you might want to turn off the CAPS LOCK key on your computer when typing as it reflects most times that you are yelling in type. I know people that have gotten used to all caps due to their hobbies (such as amateur radio) or their jobs (such as teletype or terminal operators) but for general conversational typing it's not considered good manners or etiquette. I guess my original comment took this off topic but it's good to see that I am not the only one that sees the poorly written stories in both papers and also hear many incorrect items on the local radio station. Maybe staffers at all of these outlets will see these comments and decide that they no longer wish to be seen in a bad light and change their pre-print and pre-air creation process to include spell checking and human proofreading. If people reading the paper see these problems they may decide that trusting that media outlet with the advertising for their businesses that reflect on their businesses might be better spent elsewhere at another paper or on-air outlet. I know the last time I put a classified in the Gazette a number of years ago they botched it bad and I have never gone back to them for anything and consequently I have spent a lot of advertising monies elsewhere in the past half dozen years. |

1 No, I'm not a teacher. I'm a nursing student who just happens to anal about spelling, grammar, correct comma placement and subject-verb agreement. LOL....told you I'm anal. It just bothers me that people don't try to learn this stuff. If they don't learn by the time they get to college they'll fail ENG 101 and 102. Now that I'm on an anal roll, here are a few mistakes that bother me: - "your" instead of "you're" - confusing "then" and "than" - the inability to discern when the use colons and semi-colons Now I'm done being anal-retentive; carry on! LOL |

Misuse of to, too and two is another common one as well as their, there and they're - a really big one that bothers me is when people use the term "mute point" when it should be "moot point". I'm a public school student K-12 and I went to community college for a 2 yr degree and was in a vocational teaching position for a while in the military and I'm no English major or professor but people should care about how they represent themselves to others in conversational and written language. You could be an expert in nuclear (not nucular Mr Bush LOL) physics but look like a bag lady to others when you converse with them in written or spoken English simply by the misuse and errors in your speech or writings. Now that people write a lot more electronically with spell checking software included most times it's just a matter of sitting back and skimming your masterpiece before you hit post/send/enter. It appears most of us are in agreement that a formal entity like a newspaper is making themselves look bad and possibly losing business just by printing unedited and incorrect text. If any of us let things like that slide in our resumes we could be guaranteed a nice long period without calls for interviews. |

1 Sad fact: All of the people who failed my Writing I class last semester were ALL between the ages of 18 and 24(My Professor told me this). This is why I don't text; it's impossible for me to do those silly abbreviations. It would take me 20 minutes to send one because I would have to capitalize, use punctuation and, if the message was more than 3 sentences, use a transitional phrase to tie it all together..lol |

I agree. Our local newspapers are a joke...and, unfortunately, not a funny joke.
The "editorials" are enough to make me want to take a toothbrush to my corneas. Another embarrassment is our radio station. I've heard words pronounced in a variety of oh-so-interesting ways. And not just hard location names (Chalybeate, e.g.[which,btw,was said as 'Clobbit'on the radio intead of 'Ka-lee-bit']) but common words. "Facade" ("fa-saad") was pronounced "fa-kaid", "Nicholas" said as "Ni-COE-las", "Tripoli" said as "Tri-POLE-ee"...and, literally, dozens of others. |

In the past, I have noticed spelling errors in the gazette. The bottom line, it is so wonderful to hear from grayson county, it's really not that important to me anymore. If it is bothering all of you that much, don't pay the money to get the gazette. We are all looking for something to complain about. The mispelled words, it's a catalyst of what is really bothering you, and you need blame others for your problem.

Judy, I am relatively problem free today, and the few problems I have certainly have nothing to do with the grammatical shortcomings of the staff writers of the Gazette :-)
What DOES bother me, however, is that the local papers are being used in our schools as part of the "Newspapers In Education" program...as a learning tool. Since the newspaper willingly and proudly participates in this, it's doubly important that they attempt to be as gramatically correct and error-free as possible...as an example for our kids.(We're not talking about typos here.) |

Amen, sister...my kids get so irritated that I have to type everything out on the my text messages..LOL And as for the Gazette, I stopped buying it two weeks ago because of the grammatical errors........seriously, how stupid do you have to be? I understand that it's a lot to type but dang.....keep the spell checker on! |
||||
|
*oops...well, I guess I'm a contradiction to my own post...LOL I meant to say 'type everything out on my text'....not 'on the my text'...: )

Her little girl is a half-sister to my grandaughter. My grandaughter is 8 years old and has asked if anybody could find her half-sister. My former son-in-law was married to Kristen's mom. |

i was asked if u could leave me a name |

My name is Barbara Reed. I live in Glasgow, KY, but my grandaughter lives in Lexington. She is pitiful. She told me that one thing she wanted more than anything was to see her big sister.

What a bunch of baloney! If you're so hung up on where you're from then stay in that area or pick up the phone or even use the internet - don't try to justify the 6th grade level of proficiency of a media item just because you can see the gossip from home. That has to be the lamest justification for buying a bad news rag I've heard yet. Then to turn it around on those people that don't like seeing a for-profit paper with a high per-paper price is just your ignorance bleeding through. |
