Just wanted to know if any nice trout being caught? Don't need to hear about trash or sewage, etc. I have heard not as many being caught as there used to be. Just wondering......

Okay, I am being serious too. When did they start catching trout there? When I was growing up back there in the 60's, there were nothing but ugly old mud cats in there. Did they plant trout there?

Yea years back a coalmine owner/Jack with a slurry spill around Maitland, paid a large fine by releasing 100's of pounds of trout and some deer. I was there when he did it around 1986??? I have caught upwards of 10lb trout in there in the past, but haven't fished it in awhile. The trout made there way to Tug River and i know for sure they have been caught atleast down to Davy.

Interesting.

All those coal processing plants there made the rivers/creeks run black. I take it they aren't that way anymore?

They don't run black any more. I'm too young to have seen it but I heard my parents and others talk about it being like that. They talked about how the rivers were deeper even in the summer when they are usually at their lowest, possibly because all of the water run off from coal mines and tipples. It's pretty much clear unless you're near a deep area or fast currents.

Major improvement. We used to have to wait until the mines shut down in the summer time.

Kudos to you. Enjoy the fishing. I moved to northern Michigan when I was 15 and never fished clear waters until then (except for the Greenbrier).

When we were kids, dad would take my two brothers and i to Greenbrier river and we would bring back buckets and coolers, etc full of fingerling bass and minnows, release them in Tug River. I caught a huge Largemouth bass a couple years ago in Tug and over the years alot of smallmouth bass. So the river has cleaned up alot over the years. I love the Greenbrier, but if you think about it, it is probably more polluted than Tug, with all the pesticides and animal waste runoff from the farms in three/ four counties, then into the New River. However, most all rivers in So. WVA are now very nice.

That was a beautiful river. About 20 years ago, I drove down from New Jersey to my Uncle's funeral in Princeton. I decided to take the scenic route and cut across WV so that I could come down along the Greenbrier. I tried like hell to find where our old cabin used to be. There was an old store across the road from where we were and a farmers field between the road and our cabin. I found where I thought it was and some old guy at the store told me all those cabin's washed away in a flood years earlier. Spent a lot of time there as a kid. I loved that place.
