WASHINGTON — Legislation to put veterans to work preserving and restoring national parks and other federal, state and local lands was defeated Wednesday afternoon when Senate Republicans successfully blocked the bill’s advance with a budgetary point of order.

The largely party-line Senate vote of 58-40 fell two votes short of the three-fifths majority needed to overcome the procedural objection. Republicans said the Veterans Job Corps bill violated the Budget Control Act by adding a new program that would increase the deficit.

“They’re going to kill it on a technicality,” Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., one of the bill’s co-sponsors, said on the floor before the vote.“That’s the bottom line here. That’s what’s going on here, and it’s sad.”

Democrats charged that Republican opposition stemmed from a refusal to support an initiative that originated in the White House. The corps, loosely based on the Civilian Conservation Corps created during the Great Depression, would employ veterans in conservation, resource management and historic preservation projects on public lands. The legislation would also provide for hiring veterans as police officers and firefighters.

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid, D-Nev., said the measure would have “sailed” through the Senate in past years but had been derailed by partisanship.“Blocking a veterans’ jobs bill is a new low,” he said in a statement.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., said GOP concerns were about the $1 billion price tag for the program over five years. Republicans described the proposal as a political ploy of no practical value.“If, in fact, we want to help veterans get jobs, there are lots of ways to do it,” Coburn said on the floor before the vote.“We need to make sure the job training programs we have are working, and they’re not.”

I don't see how there is any doubt that these people are out to destroy America. They should all be voted out of office. The notion that these republicans should be rewarded for this kind of behavior is ridiculous.

What's amazing is that this is the group that has always been talking about what we do for our veterans and now, they give them the shaft. How pathetic is that?

The GOP only pulls for vets if it serves their purpose only, McConnell and co are just bytches for the MIC, after the wars and vets comes home they are on their own. Most of those guys cannot understand military life because they never experienced it.

I agree. These ass wipes only praise veterans when it suits their needs. The only elected officials that I've ever seen do more than pay lip service to our needs have been Democrats. Maybe that's because most elected Democrats in the federal government have been in the military. There are very few if any Republicans in office who have ever served.

The majority of republicans in the government today came from rich families who could get deferments to stay out of the military.

I am shocked that republicans can call a bill like this "political theater." I'm shocked that even more Americans are not up in arms over this.

My Dad was a building contractor, he built many of the bussiness', the War theater, Lots of the churches so we "got by" as far as having a roof over our head. Dad always said to me, "if you and I can make a good living in McDowell County we can make a good living anywhere. I have. Never been out of work a day in my life and still go full time today. I agree with the 47% ideal of letting a person help himself before everybody runs over to give them half their pay check.

Veterans have Veterans preference in all govt , Postal and state jobs. I don't know any Veteran that wants to work that isn't employed. North Dakota employemt is begging for workers but the unemployed would rather live in Panther or War. There are jobs for those willing to work. I don'dt know of one Veteran Organization that won't help Veterans obtain employment or housing if needed. SunDog you are a blowhart.

Not to mention eating less and exercising more...and yet, I do think once your SSDI is removed, I COULD laugh this fat arse off. Cuz you'd be standing there for DAYS like a deer in the headlights wondering how on earth the rich man could do this to you.

And yet, there are not government jobs being created because the republicans brokered a deal to slash government jobs and programs...

so, what's your solution to this when republicans CUT OUT government jobs...REFUSE to create government jobs and the private sector, your "rich job creators" refuse to hire vets/

And provide links to your allegations of plenty of jobs for veterans out in the US.

First of all, Earl, as of 2010, there were 21.8 million veterans in the US, so the chances that you know all of them is exatly zero. Therefore, your anecdotal "I don't know any Veteran that wants to work that isn't employed" thing is meaningless because there are a lot of Vets that you don't know.

Secondly, the national average of 12.1% unemployment for veterans vs. 8.1% unemployment for all, shows that there was/is clearly a need for this bill.

Lastly, in case you haven't noticed, state and post office hiring is down as well.

Jesus, you are a numbskull. You must have breathe in/ breathe out tattooed on your eyelids.

Not Earl. He'll still blame it on Obama while he licks his Master Romney's feet.

Listen shit for brains! How in the fuck do you think you have more time in service than me?? I pulled 4 hitches in Vietnam, was on the ground with troops in Granada and pulled 3 hiches in Iraq and retired as a Command Seargent Major! Does matter though to me how long anyone was in the service! If you served this great country then this country needs to return the favor! Wish i could meet you in person! I'm sure you would see things my way.

Thank you for your service to America. I am embarrassed that a certain political party doesn't think you and your fellow veterans are worthy of the help you need.
