What is the Trinity?

Is there only one God? Or are there 3.

I hear so many different explanations of the Trinity from fellow Christians. Even differing explanations from people of the same church.

I have my own ideas but I would like to hear some of yours first.

There is one God. We agree there. But he was not ripped into three peices. That is the problem I see with most definitions of the trinity these days.

God put Jesus in Mary's womb and begot the perfect lamb born of a virgin. And that he was born like all men except without sin.

Jesus was God's word and since he came from no other father he was his "son". But he was a man. A man without sin. He couldn't perform any miracles without his father. Nor judge without his fathers approval. God allowed him to cure the sick by curing them for him. He said so himself in the bible that he can't do any of his miracles without the will of God his father when he was being questioned by the Jewish leaders.

Also if Jesus was God (or a third of God) then after John baptized him why would the devil try and talk him into betraying God. You would think the devil who was once the greatest Angel of God's would know better. But if he was trying to make a man sin so that he would no longer be the perfect lamb of God it would make sense. He did not tell him why don't you fly off of this ledge. He told him if you fall it is written that the angels would save you before you hit the ground. And Jesus did not blink and make the devil disappear as God would have done. He told him it is written that no man shall test God. That makes Jesus a man and not God. Does it not?

The Trinity in the early church was God, God's word (Jesus,) and his spirit (the holy ghost).

People somehow have changed the teaching of that which it says so clearly in the bible to the idea that God ripped himself into three pieces and became three separate beings. That is sad.

I am 100% Christian and believe word for word everything in the bible. I just think a lot of folks are misreading it these days. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sins because he was a sin less man. If he was not man then how could he be our perfect lamb.

He is our judge now and can cast the first stone because he has not sinned. But he had no God like powers. His father simply did his will because he was a true man of faith like we can never be. He is my lord and savior but he is not God. He is God's only begotten son (a man born of a virgin).

Remember Jesus also said that he does not come to change the laws in the Old Testament but to fulfill them. The Old Testament said very clearly that there is one singular God.

If you read the verse directly after John 10:30 you will see him talk about having done great deeds "from" his father.

In John 10:34 he explains that in the Old Testament it said "I said you are gods" and then further explains that he is not blaspheming (and implies neither would any other jews be blaspheming then) by saying that he was the Son of God. If he were truly saying that he was God then he would not have explained himself in that way directly afterwards.

It is dangerous to go with just one sentence in the bible when there are so many other sentences that contradict it. Remember you are reading translations of Translations. You can't misunderstand the whole story if your read it from beginning to end. But if you only sample what the preacher throws at you then you miss a lot in between.

It would be like me reading out the sentence that says the body of the woman I am married to belongs to me and then not reading the very next sentence that says that my body is hers as well and we are one flesh.

Also in John 17:3 Jesus did not tell God that it will be eternal life for those who know "us" th one true God. He said it would be eternal life if the know you the one true God.

Come to think about it why would he be praying to himself if the trinity is just 3 faces of the same God. He wouldn't. He (a human without sin and born of a virgin from God) is praying to God who is the only God and his father.

The Bible is not contradictory or hard to understand. We for the most part think so because our eyes are not open.

I am studying the trinity right now and I saw my views are different than some other Christians. I want a thread to discuss and study the different ideas and see what we can learn from each other.

I don't know about you but I don't just assume I am right about something until I put it to the test. And when shown that I am wrong I appreciate the lesson instead of feeling like I have lost.
