Ballantyne Area: Residents work to save prehistoric Big Rock

Big Rock rises from a wooded swath of southern Mecklenburg, time-weathered and tall, out of place in shiny Ballantyne.

We visited the area for the first time. It is the largest rock formation I've personally seen in Charlotte and deserves to be preserved. I hope the city will eventually clean up the spray paintings, especially those that look similar to that of gangs.

the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronisms used to go out there twice a year and clean up the site, but one of the local neighborhoods complained and then only the bad people had access to the site. I have hiked to this place many times and find it to be interesting. It has the potential to be preserved as a natural area but must be owed by a conservatory group. If it remains in private hands it will be developed and disappear under the crushing blades of 10 ton bulldozer blades and hauled in fill dirt never to be seen again by human eyes. To the private developer the power of the dollar outweighs the natural beauty that needs to be preserved.
