Reading this article breaks my heart and makes me angry. I am a 52 year old African-American Grandmother who grewup in Monroe, educated my Daughter there (who Graduated by-the-way) and have Grandchildren in your Union County Schools. I attended Winchester Avenue School, the only ALL Black school in Union County at that time, before the De-segregation law forced us to attend Monroe High School.
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF IN UNION COUNTY ONCE AGAIN!!!!!
Here again are White parents denying our children a chance for an equal or better education. WHY?? Because your Real Estate property will go down? Because you don't want your children to mix with low-income children from Walter Bicket and East Elementary schools? Most of you forgot what Monroe went through in the past. Or you are too young to know the history of Monroe.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! THIS IS THE YEAR OF OUR LORD TWO THOUSAND AND SIX (2006).
Our children (Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, etc) are faced with all types of differences including those races of people who are bent on destroying us mainly because we are AMERICANS. One of these days that child that you are shielding away will growup and leave the nest. If they ever leave the contained, restricted confines of North Carolina and venture out into the world, they are in for a rude awaking. The racist attitudes that you are instilling in your young will come to roost when they are faced with people who do not believe in those biased visions.
To those White Parents: Our children have a desire to learn and become educated and achieve a better life for themselves
just like your children. Yes, the two schools mentioned in your article are low-income schools, who receive federal funds, and yes, they may have a low rating in the scholastic arena, but our children DO attend school and if the School Board presents an avenue to provide our children with a chance to get a better education by attending one of thse new designated Elementary schools, then HORRAY! for the School board. Who are you to stand in our way? Personally, I resent the backwards thinking of all of you who still believe in the "SEPARATE BUT EQUAL" policy. We have to learn to live together as a people not as separate races. Come on Monroe, Get with the Program.
