Minnesota is a environmentalist paradise. I didnot vote for that CONSTITUTIONAL LEGACyFUN and it makes me sick that voters did. I wanted a recount. I love red pine trees, they are gorgeous, but hell, the old new nature boys rationalize everything they select to do or not to do...

The Sierra Club and other nature protection agencies are trying to save the St. Croix's beautiful shoreline trees, while Belwin butchers the red pines.

I don't understand environmentalists. Most times they are tying themselves trees to save them, and now they are busy cutting down a forest to make an open field. We have plenty of open fields.

Save the prairie!!! But save the trees!!! Prairie! Trees!!!

Can't they transplant the trees?!!

These people are hypocritical idiots. What if there's an owl living in one of the trees? Or a Robin? Or a mosquito?

From the standpoint that it would great to see nature people fighting between prairie and tree support!

Cutting down trees, much to the contrary of popular belief, is not always a bad thing. There was a tendency toward the 'boy scout' approach to conservation in the mid to late 20th century where, based on uninformed beliefs regarding the original vegetation of this area, pines were planted where originally there was prairie. Sure people tie themselves to trees to save them when they are in intact virgin forests. What Belwin is doing is restoring the presettlement landscape, which was prairie. Some people characterize prairie as sort of an upside down forest, with enormous biomass underground.

This is not a bad idea. Trees do emit carbon dioxide and therefore the more we can get rid of the faster we can end global warming. We as Minnesotans should be fearful of global warming. After all, we're heading in to the end of April and highs are already well into the mid to upper 40's. If this travesty keeps up we may be into the 70's by summer!

If you want prairie move to North or South Dakota!

We like trees around here! Pine trees (conifers) are the lungs of the air and produce oxygen!

But Guess what? There is no "BIOMASS" as the FOREST Took Over. God has a funny way of doing things sometimes. Please don't mess with it. This is just like dumping foreign items in the river.

You might be surprised to lear how much carbon is sequestered in the prairie. You might also be surprised to learn that prairie is a quite good producer of oxygen. And this part of MN was, according to the original surveys, prairie/oak savanna.

Those trees were planted; they didn't "take over". In other words, they don't represent God's "funny way of doing things sometimes"(perhaps what could be referred to as natural succession), but a misinformed effort at land conservation. And there was no intact forest understory as might be found in natural successional forests. Go to a pine plantation somewhere nearby and see what grows on the ground. You will find very little in the way of diversity. Sometimes it becomes necessary to mess with things in order to undo a century and a half of mismanagement.
