Hello~
I live in the Enka area of Asheville. I was wondering if anyone from my area has noticed a very INCREASED incidence of the smell of the paper factory from Canton in our area? I used to notice the smell maybe twice a week in the mornings. Then for awhile last year, it seemed as if it had completely gone away and I was SO GLAD!! Then recently I have been noticing that EVERY morning it just reeks of the smell in the air! Along with the fact that the smell is awful, I am also wondering how many negative health effects are in this for us?? If anyone know of how I should go about placing a complaint to the factor, please let me know!

Buy an ozone generator or sell your property. I am pushing for medical marijuana so we can smoke good weed when we get cancer.

That plant was sold to a wealthy man from New Zealand. He got a new permit which allows him to pollute even more. You should watch the Pigeon River after it leaves the plant. At times it is yellow and looks thick. I don't know what they are doing but it sure looks and smells bad.You may want to file a complaint with CLEAN WATER OF NORTH CAROLINA.

If you can't get any help with the clean water people, you can always fall back on the EPA. These situations are what they specialize in. Good luck.

It is easy for you to say "Get over it...smells like money" if you are not smelling it coming through your windows every morning and when you go outside on a nice summer evening to walk the dog....what a HORRIBLE, awful smell!!
My initial question remains.....how can I post a complaint about the awful smell?????

Let me ask you a question. The mill has been there for over 100 yrs now. Were you not aware of its presence when you bought your home?

It is a shame that these greedy money hungry people would do this to their neighbors. They must be turning up production, the river down stream is thick with foam. Beware rafters.

You obviously know nothing about the permit process! The permits on the mill are some of the most stringent in the world! There's millions spent everyday for clean air and water there! That said, it has been there over 100 years and the requirements were not there 75-80 years ago - people were just happy to see others working! Now, the mill is one of, if not the cleanest mills in the United States and world. But, any reasonable person would realize that cleaning up anything that has been there for some time just won't happen overnight!
All those complaining knew the mill was here when you came here - I doubt anyone is over 100 that's posting on here. So, get over it or move back where you came from! The Coal fired plants in Tennessee are doing more harm to our air than the mill!

I know a little about the permitting process. I possibly know more than you are giving credit. I know the river has progressively gotten worse since the last permit lapsed. I also know we will not rest nor stop crying foul until the river runs clean. For the record, I was born and have lived here all my life. Some of my earliest memories was the eye burning stench coming from The Pigeon River.

I to have been here my entire life and I'm quite sure your not 100 years old, so the mill was likely here at least 40-50 years before you! The smell used to bad, but now I rarely if ever smell anything from it!

The river has not gotten worse! It actually is cleaner than many rivers in TN. After much testing by the state, the ban on eating fish was lifted. Most native species of fish have been re-introduced and are living well. I've seen the actual numbers and know that the color leaving the mill improves each year thanks to the improvements made by the mill and the hard work of it's employees!

Why aren't you complaining about the polution in TN? Don't wanna loose jobs there, but wanna complain about everyone else? The TVA plants polution levels are extrememly high and lets talk about lack of regulations..........

Oh maybe it's because eastern TN's best business now is the dirty river that you all are rafting on! LOL - If it's so bad, why are your residents making good money rafting down it?

I'm with you Timmy - It supplies many jobs even in TN, SC and GA. As long as they're making improvement and working toward a better future, leave it alone!

Most of the rafters are from out of town and probably don't know the dangers lurking in that water. Some of the guides tell me they grease their skin before they access the river. They do this which helps them from breaking out in a rash. I advise out of town friends to stay out of the river. Who told you that I refused to complain about TVA? All pollution is bad. This topic is about the stinky pigeon river.

Do you honestly believe that if that were true there would be anyone allowed in the river? LOL

You don't think the TVA polution falls in the Pigeon River to? Not one complainer has taken into account that there's pollution from other sources enterening the river to. There's places that animals are still allowed in the river, open pipes are there, etc..... No one ever wants to look at the big picture, it's all about trying to sue and get rich while taking away the livelyhoods of probably 5,000 + workers around the area.

Bottom line, when your TN rivers and lakes are cleaner than the river, come back on here and we'll consider your complaints! Till then move on!

I agree with ya wnc. But I want to add that the topic was not about the river to start with - Money-Greed made it into that! It was about smell, which could reflect on the TVA plants once again, so Greed wants to change the topic!

T.V.A. was forced to clean up the coal fired plants at a considerable expense to the rate payers. You folks in Canton have been allowed for to long to pollute the air and water. It would be alright if it only affected you guys. But the fact of the matter is Newport TN has paid the devastating price for western Carolina economic prosperity. But like Bob Dylan said the times they are a changing. We won't quit and our children won't quit until the river is restored.

Yes, I honestly believe my statement. What facts do you have to dispute my statement? Do you not understand these polluters are directly affecting the lively-hood of 35,000+ Cocke County residents? It is beyond my comprehension how a people could inflict such a travesty on their neighbors while trying to defend their actions.
