Patients urged to test for infections after Chambersburg urology practice admits reusing instruments

Patients of a Chambersburg urology practice recently received a potentially unsettling letter, advising them to get tested for HIV and hepatitis because reused instruments had been used for their prostate biopsies. Read more

While I am not a male who has had prostate issues I have been a female patient of that practice for more than 10 years as I suffer from chronic kidney stones. That office never called me to tell me that my doctor, Dr. Haren, left the practice. I heard through word of mouth that I no longer had a doctor. When I called them they said I could have Klinko. After reading this article I will go elsewhere. I work in a hospital. I don't even reuse a glove. They reused needles to save money! I'll bet that savings was not even transferred to the patients and now they have to be tested for diseases.

My husband is/was a patient of Haren's... he has an appt in a few weeks that was scheduled to be with Haren a few months ago... he has not been informed who his doctor is at this practice..saving money of this nature is a drop in the bucket based upon a practice's income...patients should have been nofified immediately - not over a month after the realization was made - resigning was cowardly - Haren should have issued letters himself...

I am totally overwhelmed by this article. I trusted these Doctors and recommended them to my friends and neighbors.

As an afterthought, how will former patients who have relocated be notified? Who will pay for their tests?

I had an awful experience there while I had kidney stones, that led to surgery. I was concerned about this practice then and am devastated now. I should have listened to my gut.
How do I know that they didn't reuse utensils doing my procedure?
I want tested too at their cost.
This is a very serious matter, if they were cutting costs by reusing needles, imagine what else they were doing that we don't know about yet.

Sobeit, just so you are aware. Urology Associates are not a part of Summit Health, they are a private practice. But yes, I do agree that the doctors were not aware as the nurses/techs set everything up for the doctors.

As much money as they charge for health care services, there is no reason to re-use anything.

My father received this letter and was tested last week. Thank God his test results came back clean. He transferred with the doctor who left, and when he asked whether this doctor was responsible in any way, they refused to tell him. I could be wrong, but isn't that a patient's right to know whether the doctor they are currently seeing is involved in something like this?

Patients have the right to know if there's a repeated pattern of patients unhappy enough to file malpractice suits against a physician. Because court records are by law publicly accessible, researching a doctor's case history is as easy as making a trip to the courthouse and performing a records search.

-Locate the county in which the doctor practices. Malpractice suits are filed in the county where the infraction occurred. If the doctor practices at multiple offices, make sure you check the county for each of them.

-Visit the county courthouse where civil actions are held. The Clerk of the Court is in charge of maintaining all court records, so visit that department to begin your records search.

-Request information on all civil action in which the doctor was a defendant. Most public records laws allow local agencies to assess a reasonable fee for locating and duplicating records for citizens, so you may be required to pay for copies of records to be made.

-Sort case records by type. If you receive all records in which the doctor is a defendant, you may receive information on other types of cases that aren't malpractice-related.

I was there 6 years ago for a prostate exam and a lump in my groin, I wanted my mothers cancer Doctor in New Jersey to look at my records.. When I went to the office IN PERSON , I was told by the receptionist and another office worker there that there was no records to be forwarded to another Doctor, I said, they are my records, there must be some record of my being here twice, she said they do not forward records and I belly ached out the door with a room full of patients. The following week I saw another Doctor in Chambersburg and he ordered a sonogram and........... he got my records from Urology Assoc. Who said there was NOTHING to send.. I never went back there, now I am due for another examd and was referrred there, they sent a shit load of papers to fill out and I thought to myself, I am NOT going back there, they lied about my records, had my mothers Doc had seen my records I would never had agreed to have surgery done by another Chambersburg Doctor, I would have known by the Cancer Doc in New Jersey that the lump was not serious.. 6 years later I am still furious with their practice and they way they treat the patients.. Now I will def not go back there if they are reusing needles. Go somewhere else if you have Urological problems.. just my 3 cents of advice..

I am copying and pasting all of these comments and taking them to my lawyer. I am irate.

Patients as far back as 2007 got letters... don't know if they sent them to just local folks or not?

Ok. So now we are threatening people with guns? This is so out of hand. Everything was reported to the proper authorities and it is in their hands to judge. We are not the judge, jury, and executioners!! I find this behavior very offensive and scary that someone would make this threat and it should be reported to the police!!!

Obviously you aren't one of their patients who might get a fatal disease that also has a very negative stigma attached to it, as well as could be transmitted to your loved ones.

TKO: This is so scary! We lost a family member the same way you mention above. He shouldn't have died! We still our mourning and it did ruin our lives. It was at the hands of the guy who left. I can't print what I personally want to say about this so called dr.!!! Consumed with grieve and shock we did pursue legal action. They count on that.
I am really sorry to hear about your loss. After I figured out what they were all about I contacted the police and the health care office in Harrisburg a couple years ago but no one would do anything about the crimes they have been committing on people for years and they keep taking advantage of the fact that nobody will do anything about it so they continue to keep lying scamming and ruining peoples lives for that big MONEY they only care about and now this.

Exactly.... when Heran was questioned why - he "allegedly" stated - it saved the practice $5,000. Techs don't make the decisions on saving money.
