Bicyclist dies after being hit by auto
The motorist fled the scene, but was arrested later. By Teresa Stepzinski, The Times-Union
http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories...
A Brunswick man was killed Monday when a car hit his bicycle on U.S. 17 North in Glynn County.
Mikeal Hodges, 18, was riding a bicycle south about 12:30 a.m. when he was struck, said Cpl. William Nease of the Georgia State Patrol.
Hodges died at 1:21 a.m. at Southeast Georgia Health System's Brunswick hospital, said county Coroner Jimmy Durden.
Enrique Martinez, 24, of Brunswick has been charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, hit-and run, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, Nease said.

(more at link above)

Another unnecessary, tragic death because of drunk driving. Enrique Martinez ought to be executed for 1st degree murder.

Here in Waycross when it is good weather I ride my bike to and from cross town every day to where I do my volunteer work at, it is 5 miles one way, and it takes me about 35 minutes to ride it, You would be surprised at how many times each day I am almost run over by people that just will not give me any room on the road, The sad thing is there is no one coming from the other way when they almost hit me. I hate this time of the year. Just before the weather got bad I saw more people riding bikes because of the price of gas going up, I do it because of my health and diet, also because of the gas to but mostly of my health and I need to lose 50 more pounds. I have already lost 225 pounds and the last 50 will just not go away....
But people just do not see people on bicycles or motorcycles, But I think as gas prices go up that bicycles will make a come back in the warmer months..

Now in saying what i said about people not seeing bicycles last summer On highway 82 here in Waycross we had a young man ride his bike right our into traffic and cause a car to turn into a 18 wheeler and cause a head on collision and killed the lady in the car. They charged him( the boy on the bicycle) with killing the lady and for running the stop sign on his bike. So you see this works both ways if you going to be in traffic you have to be responsible for what you do.

I'm so sad to hear there's been another needless death because of carelessness. Resposiblity is a two-edged sword. No matter what set of wheels one chooses as a conveyance, the rider / driver must do the right thing. As I age, I try to always watch out for others and well as for myself. I don't have to have that little piece of road so badly that it's paid for by the shedding of innocent blood.

Please be careful on your two wheels. I know how crazy many drivers are. Most people don't give a crap about others period, especially in traffic. I ride on two wheels but it has motors. There's been many a time that I've avoided a catastrophe just by being alert and yielding to their stupidity.

And I admire how you've stuck to the your diet so well! I hope the next 50 go quickly and easily.:o)

About 25 years ago I used to ride motorcycles but after being rear-ended three times by women one on her phone, one eating and the last she was putting on her make up, the last one got out of her SUV and while her truck was on top of me said!!! DID he scratch my bumper? Now this came from the woman that hit me from the rear end at a red light while putting her make up on... Her bumper did it have a scratch???.....People do not see motorcycles at all also. But I love them and miss them.
Last summer In Gainesville Fla. While I was at the V.A. Medical Hospital we where shopping around town, I stopped at the Harley Davison shop JUST TO LOOK...LOL My wife was not happy and the more I looked the more she got unhappy, After we left she said JUST looking yeah right, then she reminded me about my legs...I told her I was just looking and I still am,,,,I still have my helmet and I may buy a new one in a year BUT I am JUST Looking.....LOL

I've had close calls. My new bike sits up very high (it's a Suzuki V-Strom adventure bike) with EXTREMELY bright lights and loud horn.

You're wife is probably going to shot me, but being handicapped shouldn't stop one from riding. As you know, strength doesn't enable us to ride, ability does.(Did I hear a hammer being cocked?? ha ha)

I'm so glad my husband likes riding too because if he didn't he would be very lonely sitting at home without me.:o) He has his own wheels. I'll stop riding when I'm too feeble to hold the throttle or I'm 6 feet under. Hopefully, it will please the Lord to keep me around a little while longer. I sure like being here, especially in SE Gawga.
