There are 2 comments on the Daily Freeman story from Apr 4, 2007, titled Ellenville leader fears legislation could block casino. In it, Daily Freeman reports that:

The following were my comments on the trailer to this article that appeared in the Freeman just days before it.

Also, as an unelected administrator, the term "Ellenville leader" is a bit of a stretch; I don't know how many are actually "following" him!

Village Manager = Village?

"The village of Ellenville opposes an initiative to have Ulster County removed from the list of possible sites for casino gambling."

Sorry, but an unsolicited opinion from the Village Manager does NOT represent the opinion of the VILLAGE of Ellenville, particularly as this question has NOT come before the Board for discussion, review, or a resolution.

When this casino issue came up a few years ago, there was strong community opposition to plans for a casino in the Town of Wawarsing surrounding the Village, particularly as these decisions were being made by the county before the local entities were even consulted. It would have been nice if the unelected VM had consulted with the entire Board before going out and claiming to speak for the Village.

This is the same VM who, when the Ellenville Hospital was facing closure due to bankruptcy, opined publicly, without Board knowledge or input, that maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if the Hospital closed, if that was the market reality.

Sometimes, appointed public administrators should remember that they serve at the pleasure of the Board that they answer to, and that they are there to execute the policies and directions of that Board, and should be more seen than heard.
