We can probably all remember at least one newspaper article about someone who claimed to be "homeschooling" but was actually not schooling at all.

Its nobody's business how,and when,I teach my children. The whole concept of homeschooling is to give the children a real world education. When its time to teach biology,we go to the aquarium. When its time to teach goegraphy,we go to the Grand Canyon. Get over yourself, and stop making thinly diguised comments aimed at the Thrall family.

Actually, it is EVERYBODY'S business how and when you teach your children. If you are at all interested in the future of this country then you have to take an interest in our educational system. Home schooling is a concept whose time has come and gone. The world has progressed beyond the ability of untrained parents to provide their children with a quality education. The aquarium cannot substitute for actual training in biology and the Grand Canyon is lovely, but not the same as actually understanding and being able to teach basic geological concepts like Uniformitarianism. Today, home schooling is only suitable for separatists and religous zealots.

The state "educational" system stinks, and most know it. Each parent should be responsible for the education of their children. Homeschooling is for anyone who wants to, and by IL law, anyone CAN do. I do agree, though, that the parents should be able to take on that responsibility. There are plenty of very well trained parents who homeschool, and many homeschoolers have knowledge beyond the public school kids.

Bottom line is that anyone in IL is allowed to homeschool. Legally and morally, it is no one's business how you educate your child.

I have educated two of my 4 children at home. At 5 years of age,my daughter was reading and comprehending on a 3rd grade level. You can say what you will, but I have results. 2 kids in college,Concordia and Murray State respectively. My other two,a set of twin boys, will undoubtedly be headed for whatever higher education they seek. Your opinion means little.

What actually is GOEGRAPHY, and where did you learn to teach that? Glad my kids are getting a better education than that!

it took YOU 11 hours to find a typo. I'm not a Thrall, but you seem to have it in for them. I'll bet you don't have the guts to walk the block or so from wherever you live in Donovan to their church and say anything at all.

Goegraphy? Clearly spelling is one subject that you should leave to the public schools.

Okay. Name one. I won't say that public schools don't have their issues, but educating the next generation shouldn't be left up to amateurs. If your kid is failing in public school maybe you should stop pointing you finger at the school system and take a good long look in the mirror. What are YOU not doing to facilitate your childs education?

Parents aren't amateurs, just for the record. They know their children better than any teacher could.

Ok. Name one? Here's a list of homeschoolers who made it to the National Spelling Bee Championship and some who won it or placed very high:

http://www.soundanalarm.net/HomeSchoolersWinN... - homeschoolers took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place

I'd say that's enough to start. Good job, students!

The ONLY thing that a spelling bee proves is that a contestant has excellent memorization skills. It is not a test of critical and independant thinking ability. Try again. Unless the parents have made extensive studies of the subjects that they are teaching (and have the credentials to prove it) then they ARE amateurs in the field of education. Owning a chemistry set does not qualify one to TEACH chemistry.

William asked: Name one.

One was named. The National Spelling Bee Championship. It is a school-based competition in which the homeschoolers out performed the public school kids. Now you want to argue it? They gave you a very valid answer. Is that what the public school taught you? To argue with the correct answer? Bosh. You just got outdone, that's all.

Actually, I didn't get outdone. The National Spelling Bee Championship proves little to nothing. The number of homeschooled children involved is insignificant when compared to the total number of homeschooled children in the US. Those kids are statistical outliers. Proof would be a published study of ACT or SAT scores for the last ten years, for example, that showed demonstrated superior performance of homeschooled students over public and private school students with supporting statistical analysis. Plus, winning a spelling bee doesn't illustrate an "across the board" superiority of home schooled students. My mistake is that I did not specify legitimate grounds for comparison. "Name one" was a broad statement that provided an easy out for homeschooling supporters.

Homeschooling also offers sick parents the opportunity to molest their children without school intereference. Proper educational facilities should be REQUIRED.

Wonder why the state and federal governments keep pouring more and more money into the educational system, yet the output in student scores from those facilities keeping getting worse and worse? Homeschooling is an excellent option.
