This is horrible legislation. First of all the general assembly does not have the resources or time to study the details of Georgia's higher educational needs. There is also the chance that the general assembly will make decisions concerning the system based on political strategy. The regents is in place now because it is the best system. If more and more Republican politicians like Bob Smith continue to fiddle with Georgia's traditional government they will end up alienating the people of Georgia.

Before they do in the Board of Regents, how about some legislation to do away with 'P' Cards?? Still have way too many folks ripping off the taxpayers by charging personal expenses -- at the expense of the taxpayers!!

Regents ?? And a sitting Governor can appoint a committee that runs the Board ??

Wow !! Wonder what true adjenda gets revealed behind closed doors ??

In the 1970's the West Virginia Board of Regents decided a 3rd Medical School was necessary. Both the then Governor and the Legislature joined in opposition due to declining population, economic recession, costs, funding, and a proposed massive tax increase to fund it. The BOR finally won out. The 3rd Medical college was built, taxes were raised, students enrolled then graduated and promptly fled the state.

In the mid-1980's that BOR was abolished. That "best system" was replaced with one that can now be "controlled".

Regents seldom have to answer to the people that have to fund their decisions. If they can't get the tax dollars, they will raise tuition. When was the last time the Georgia BOR rolled back tuition ??
