Hello, I believe that an Officer who came up through the ranks should run Sheriff's Department. The Officer that comes up ranks knows the people in the county, both in Department, and in community. This is obtained from a working relationship, by it's nature makes as many political enemies as allies. Leadership is the most effective way of gaging the best Officer to run Sheriff's Department. You simply can not come trough the ranks with out leadership. Sheriff's Department is better served by experience than popularity! Thanks,Rob

Rob,
Did you read the whole article & the comments on the Star Gazette page? Your right experience & leadership skills do count, whether it be in the sheriff's office, the state police or the town/village police department. From what I can see, all these men have ties to our area and have served our community in one capacity or another--some more than others. Just because one canidate "came up through the ranks" in the Sheriff Dept., doesn't necessarily make him the best for the job, or the most experienced. As one of the candidates said, they are all officers of the law-point blank-they all have enough experience. You have to look at how they conducted themselves as law enforcers, how they interacted with the people they served & protected. That is what makes a candidate stand out from the rest, or in your words makes them "popular". There is a reason they are the popular vote-because they are well liked by their peers & their community-and that counts for something. You could tell by his comments that the candidate that "came up through the ranks" in the sheriff dept. is totally clueless to the wants & needs of the people with whom he is supposed to be serving. Talk to some other people in law enforcement in our area & see what they say about that candidate, you'll hear words like clueless, disconnected, & even corrupt--not someone I want in office. You need to look into this a little more before you vote...we all do.

dave cole has spent his whole career in the southern tier area and did come up through the ranks. OK he did it as a trooper instead but he has met and worked with most of the sheriff's men both as a trooper and as undersheriff. he has held many leadership posts as well as years of road patrol. i'm a retired EMT that has watched dave at many scenes and have a lot of respect for him. there's a reason he's popular, he's a good cop and a nice guy.

Would you think that popularity may be the key to cleaning up the department? I'd prefer to see some new blood in the county. Also, a non-county
employee would make better choices for the people
instead of spending alot of time covering up departmental inadequacies.

No one said that being well liked by your peers & community will "be the key to cleaning up the department", but I can assure you, it'll make the job a hell of alot easier. Think about it, how easy is it going to be for a Sheriff to get people to do what he wants of them when they don't like or respect him based on his prior actions and patterns of behavior? I have many friends in law enforcement in this county (troopers,BCI, sheriff deputies & Corning PD..)& not one of them says that Ordway is the guy they want to get it. All of them want Cole. They say Ordway has a bug up his ass for the State Troopers cause they once had to investigate his father & he's never gotten over it. The sheriff guys think he has a piss-poor attitude & doesn't treat people well. They all say he doesn't play nice with others when there is a case that crosses over each of there lines. For instance a case that both the troopers & the sheriff dept. are working on. I don't know what to think cause my father had a 24hr towing service & has worked with alot of these guys & he's voting for Ordway because he really likes Ray Dell.My dad's been retired for several years. I told one of my friends in the sheriff dept. about my dad's choice & he told me that Dell has changed for the worse the last couple of years. I don't know....but when I read Ordway's quotes, I could see what my friends meant about him. Right now I'm leaning towards Cole, but I could change my mind. I'd like to know what COOTER thought, consideing he's from Wayland

Its all about DWI and who does the best in that. Can rape steal do anything else and never get help in watkins glen. Its about money and what gets it. Its a training ground for DWI . And they chose and pick the arrest by who they know .Know frist hand and seen it happen. Just dont ask for help if you need it..go to the state troopers if you need help . Sad they have one car for two cars in town here and only want DWI for money to keep so many in a job ..but cant do anything else. Stay out of watkins. Dont go to town just to get milk late..you will be pulled over and harassed.

Meth is the norm.To my knowledge the sheriffs office hasnt made an orchestrated bust in thirty years.Occassionally they will make a traffic stop and accidently spot some dope.Dwis are their fortes also.Never EVER from the country club though.A good ol boy sheriff can never be the answer.Someone who doesnt have alliances with local residents is the only answer. Can the wife of the sheriff there pass a drug test for loratabs and meth.IF SO THEN CONSIDER YOURSELVES LUCKY.

Down here with all the small towns, it's usually the guy with the most family members that wins the races. That means the candidate has to meet the expectation of those who have elected him or her.
Problem is, if a deputy catches one of the protected few in the county then they have to get the case naulprocessed or thrown out. The the person caught gets braver until caught the next time. And on and on.
Qualifications:
Criminal Justice training
Basic Police Officer Experience
Practical field experience
Desire to do what is right by the people
Person who knows about the Public Trust
Person who does not think he is Rambo
Emergency Operations Experience
Middle age or more
Willingness to work on long term tough cases
Willing to forgo some of the little stuff to get to the pushers, etc.
Have an apprecition for our constitutional rights
Not hooked into the good ole boy network
Have voters who are willing to back this candidate
No expectation that if caught the ticket must be fixed
Willlingness to work with State Police on investigations for any illegal operations
Person that does not have a big ego
Person that is not narciscistic
Are the voters ready to vote like this
If not......hummmm.....
