Over policed in St. Lawrence County

May 2, 2013 Full story: North Country Now 183

Do you believe that your friends, neighbors and surrounding community members are all criminals that should be constantly scrutinized by the police? If not, why is it acceptable for there to be a SLC Sheriff between Potsdam and Canton, a US Border Patrol agent in the village of Canton, and three NYS Troopers between the villages of Canton and ... They tore our car apart one more time, left it as is and then when we're finally on our way out of town, saw them sitting reading the paper and eating Burger King in a parking lot.
Get rid of useless ones. There are so many cops that pay attention to the wrong things. While they were tearing my car apart for no reason, there was probably seven thousand gazillion other crimes being committed that could have used their prompt attention.
When they do that, get their names, time of day, etc. AND THE NUMBER OF THE VEHICLES)!!!!
Trust me, NY Sen Patty Ritchie and US Rep Bill Owens WILL DEFINITELY ACT ON IT!
They kept harassing my son en route to school in Canton. They don't NOW!!!

That is a great representation of the law enforcement up here... If u are parked someplace, You're smoking pot.... If you walk out of a bar, You are going to drive..... If you are male in your twenties, you're transporting drugs..... If you aren't white, you did something wrong.

Police in st Lawrence county are jokes. Nothin but Red necks with a gun and a badge on a power trip

That's so rude and stupid. Why would I have been smoking dope of any sort in view of the police station? I'm not a moron, and my record is so clean I might as well not exist.

Actually, police numbers in st. Lawrence are low, especially state police. Do the research. 2nd... you are complaining about too many police officers? Okay.. so when you truly NEED a police officer and it takes them 20 mins to long, you will bitch that it too long and there should be more. Its a never ending battle with people. Ppl hate police but love the police when they need them. People complain about being pulled over and given tickets... well don't break the law and you wont be pulled over or given a ticket. Border patrol are under federal standards, which is different that state and county probable cause. I've never seen a more stupid article/post and the ridiculous comments ppl have made.

I'm sorry this is off topic. If the bus driver is doing their job. If the parents are doing their job. And drivers obey the law no child will get hit. Children rode buses for many decades without someone to get them across the road. You can't prevent all accidents. I'm sure that some kids and their escorts have been hit. My point is they will make a job where one isn't needed. Do you really think we need so many police? We do need some. They have a hard job. It wouldn't be good to have no police. But how many do we need to pay for. If you had a half acre yard would you pay ten people to mow it?

I used to sleep above the back seat in the rear window of my grandparents 68 impala, 70 mph down the interstate.
I guess they call that endangering the welfare of a child now a days.
Of coarse that was back in the day when you had to walk inside a building to make a phone call and alcohol was the only thing powerful enough to impare your driving.
My point is when you try make the world retardproof it takes away the rights of the normal intelligent people.

I did nothing wrong but drive into st law co! Can I check your trunk? He said
For what ? Well being so close to the border(fowler ny) we do random serches. Ok what if I dont give my permission for a search?
Well sir it could take some time to get a dog down here to do a walk around. It would be quicker if I just took a peek.As he smiled at me. I wanted to punch him
So i let him molest my vehicle for all to see.

Unfortunately due to new laws that require you to pull to one side or the other giving them a whole lane (of which ever one they choose to be in) a resulting accident would most likely be viewed in court as your failure to give a police vehicle displaying emergency lights clear right of way. Nice huh. As the state gets sued time and time again for troopers escilating chases until someone dies, they get smarter and make laws that make it impossible for them to be at fault.

there are no "random" searches. The 4th Amendment protects you against this and LEO's have to abide or risk a suit. Probably cause is needed to search your vehicle! However the Border Patrol only requires reasonable suspicion to conduct a stop, still probably cause is required for a search!
On another note there are a lot of LEO's in the St. Lawrence county area, but we are positioned on an international boundary that is also shared with an Indian reservation, increasing the need for a greater presence. In all truthfulness you have no idea what the amount of illegal activity is taking place and destroying the future! I have been in court for many years and the increase in criminal activity is staggering

Riparian, if you live on a dead-end road, why are there any cops driving by at all? Partiers?

And YES, we are over-policed here in St. Lawrence County, without a doubt. Here in wonderful Gouverneur, we have the GPD, SLCSD, NYSP, NYSDEC, and DHS/ICE all working within the Village limits at various times. Did I forget anyone? We PAY through the nose for all of this redundancy, too. We're made to feel like criminals in our own communities and on our roads all in the name of the "War on Terror (DRUGS)". On a side note, that "War" and the money it generates is why drugs, even weed, will remain illegal for the foreseeable future.

We live along the border with Canada, therefore we should be forced to live in a 100 mile wide police state? What they're doing amounts to little more than harassment of the many in the hope of catching the very few, and tells me that LE, especially the NYSP and Feds, don't really have a clue.
Maybe rather than be all up in arms about jobs of people putting their lives at risk protecting you, you would more upset with the fact that the majority of your "taxes" are spent supporting generations of welfare/ssi/disb, scammers. Just a thought

I would rather have a random search from time to time than keep supporting you welfare ass drugged up shitt bags. I hope they catch every single one of you drugged up scum bags I see in the store using food stamps to buy soda and shit for your kids. I also hope they catch all of you assholes working the unemployment and disability systems. I realize there are good people on all of these and I do not have a problem with that. Just the shit bags need some prison love.

The reason we are over policed is becuase the welfare trash seem to gravitate to SLC. But if you look at the numbers, crime is going up but police numbers are going down. The sheriff's are down two positions and a few out on extended leave. The SP just graduated on class in the last four years and although they have mroe coming out, four years worth of retirements are hard to recover. the local PDs are the same with budget issues. I am a teacher and I know we have similar problems but lets look at the reason for the increased police presence. Its not the numbers it the fact that they are more proactive trying to eradicate the drug problems and welfare crime that is taking over this county.
