Given the economics of today, should Fire Departments have drill teams?

Drill teams today are certainly not drill teams of the past and in our northern area there exists fewer all the time. It is my opinion that all these teams also have some sort of conflict and fragile in existence. Compensation and liability are constant topics throughout all departments and communities. Add the money that is invested to keep these teams rolling is no small feat. Copenhagen is in conflict for many reasons. Many of them previously listed throughout topix threads. People can argue tradition and historical significance of the drill team sport but times have changed. It won't be much longer and we won't have to debate it any further.

The family was out of control again over the weekend. Rules apply to no one in the family!

I will say from my view yes drill teams if utilized correctly are amazing for recruitment and retention of members and I know several northern teams receive no money from their dept they fundraise and get sponsored from area businesses. Many teams practice 2 nights a week and are there several more which means stations are manned and response times are quicker Kudos to those who are working hard to make this sport better and as far as fewer teams I here there may be at least 2 new teams next year

Its a great tool until the team and captain think they are above the rest of the department. There currently are more negatives associated with a team then there are positives. The team thinks the rules dont apply to them. unfortunately it is not the team building concept or function of the past, if divisive, critical, abusive and out of control.

So you would have an entire team condemned because of a couple of people? How is that just for the rest of the members of the drill team?

The drill team has its bad apples. They are the ones bringing down not only the drill team, but the department also. People need to understand that the drill team does not make the department. The department will survive without it. I see other departments around the area that once had drill teams and they are still around today. It seems that they are able to keep their memberships up without them. I see no reason for continuing with the Copenhagen team. The department has a new vehicle they just purchased. I would think that in these tough economic times, the tax payers should not have to foot the bill for the team to go and race. I know for a fact that the department (tax payer dollars) do fund this team. It is time to put an end to this drill team, done, finished, kaput....

Well without the drill team very one in the fire district can expect taxes to go up. I say this because there will be no field days anymore if the team is gone. Therefore the deficit that the department has every year that is made up for by field days will fall on the tax payers. Be careful what you wish for. Without the drill no field days = higher taxes for the already over taxed.

This is cut and pasted from an earlier post.

this is what went on on the island. Underage drinking, members fighting, members throwing things hurting members of the public, litterly cuts were caused by this one. Guys intimidating others threats exchanged, etc etc. females barking orders that have nothing to do with the decisions.

Guys going that didn't pay for their rooms, sleeping in trucks and cars, table scraps being given to the same guys that didn't contribute for the food. What happen to the orders pay before you go or you don't go.

I'm sorry there is something wrong with this entire scenario. One person talking about it is a rumor. 4 or 5 people talking about it that we're there kinda makes it factual. Time for new leadership or no team, at least this can't be blamed on the other scapegoat!

Was told that at least 7 of the team members involved in just these few events. That is a majority of your team.

I don't think the loss of the team will be that bad. I think there are other ways to bring in the people for field days. If anything there may be an improvement in attendance. I again state the fact that there are other departments without race teams that have field days. I attended your field days this year during races. The crowd seemed a little sparse. If there is no field days, there will probably be savings alone in the way of funds from the department not going towards the racing.

So the Drill Team is up for discussion...must be slow news day. Sorry that only the negatives get reported and not the positives about the people that are active in this group. Maybe those that do the reporting need to take lessons in reporting unbiased reports so that those interested could make their own conclusions.

If the drill team is using taxpayers money then why do they work so hard having fundraisers to support their team. Also, comparing the past and the present...actually Safety issues are much improved and they are now using more dedicated tracks instead of side streets etc.

Also, when there are fundraisers specifically for the Fire Dept who are the ones that are usually working them...and how much profit for the f.d. has been raised to make up the difference needed for their needs. Taxpayers should feel fortunate that they aren't paying the full shot.

The drill team members get credit for training...how many other members show up for training events when they are announced.

Just a reminder that there are other points to consider.

I hope that if you are posting on this that you are a supporter and resident of the village. Whether the drill team or department has function most people that attend are from outside the community. You expect the fire department to be there when you have an emergency, the fir department needs you to support them whether it is buying a vehicle or having an event to provide for equipment. It seems that any function that anyone has in the community is not supported by many in the village, how ever they are the first to be called on when there is a need. Lets support not only the fire department but other organizations in the community as well. Just a side note that the drill does draw a lot of people to the community on field day.

Well clearly there is many conflicts within this department. How does anyone get involved to change all this stuff? For weeks there has been so many posts about the behavior of a few members. Our community needs change. We need a department we can respect. How do we get this back? How do we unite to change this fire departmant?

For all of those who seem to continually find something to complain about...if you seem to have all of the expert knowledge to write about what is wrong...why don't you put your energy to better use and get out there and volunteer. If everyone is so terrible here...why do you live here..could you ever find something good to say that might entice people to want to live here.

I am sure there is always room for improvements no matter where we are but I give these volunteers alot of credit for continuing to volunteer to serve this community and put their own lives, their own time, money and family life aside inspite of these complaining people.

Hmmm

Seems like this is similar to another poll about a local fire dept. What's in the water in Copenhagen?
