These salarys really arent that much money anymore. This aint 1978. Gas is $4 a gallon and even a modest house is over $150000.

Overpaid for educating your children and helping them become productive members of society? There is only one kind of person who complains about how much teachers make. Bitter ne'er-do-wells with chips on their shoulders. I would bet that you are a daily complainer about something and a pain to be around.

I agreee with my two cents..educate your own children so they can grow up and be as stupid as you. Teachers are so underpaid and have to deal with ignorant parents like you and your kids who are probably the ones who like to disrupt the class.

Only a uneducated idiot would post that and then say they are paid too much. Considering each of them are college educated and teaching our children to not grow up like you these salaries seem rather fair for these days. Now I do agree that the upper brass, super attendant etc. are paid too much. They need to divide some of that loot up with the teachers! And no I am not a teacher.

I see both sides of this issue. I don't think that the original posters education level can be determined by the post. This could be a very interesting thread if people were not bashing on each other. I would surmise that the original posters contention is that for the education the kids in Waterloo are receiving is not up to par with >$12 million that is being spent in salaries alone. Personally, I believe that educators are not paid enough. With that said I also believe that our educational system is out of whack in comparison to other countries. The US education standards are ranked 17th globally. As a country we should be looking at what other countries that have higher standards are doing and start adopting those policies. Year round schooling, more class room time (longer hours) and earlier pre-schooling (2-3 years old) are just a few of things that other countries are doing that we should be doing. One other thing that I would also like to note about the pay structure is that we obviously have a breakdown in teacher classifications. When we see PE teachers making more than Science, Math, English and foreign language teachers then something is out of balance. I am no way discounting what a PE teacher does in any way. With that said the skills that are needed to teach physics, physiology, calculus, etc........ are quite different than that of a PE teacher.

#13 Apr 6, 2012
It's actually 185 paid days, not to mention any time that is spent on one's own in or out of school working.

So, if a college-educated professional works 230-ish days per year--185/230 = 80%; (random salary on high end)$60,000/.80 =$75,000 equivalent for 48 weeks per year. This is for a college-educated, often MA-holding individual with 15+ years of experience in her/his field who is, as has already been mentioned, taking care of our kids and putting up with the crap that parents and anonymous posters on Topix throw their way.

If you think it is so easy, try subbing in ANY school for a single day...

To the Poster I like your style!!!

Helton makes 166,000 and Ivers and Gardner make less. Gardener has been in this school district for 20 plus years. Plus you have Borger making more than Clinebell, and Eddleman. Those two ladies do more for children than a P.E. teacher ever thought about doing. I wonder if this is Costello's salary with raise or before?
I get alot of this is because of Union crap but P.E. before science, math, english. What a bunch of bull.

Ed Gardner would be rolling in his grave to see what his legacy has turned into.

Borger also coaches and probably has 30 years experience.

Remember--these numbers are for teaching salary, any extra stipends, TRS payments and insurance.

BTW, if you think I am "nuts", "clueless" and you "disagree", explain to me why! I am not nuts (I work in the education field); I am not clueless (see previous comment); and if you disagree, tell me what you disagree with, you spineless chump!!

Well, I would have to disagree with you on the lines of your name calling. See this is what it all comes down to, if someone disagrees with you they are a spineless chump. This shows how clueless you are. Why is it these days when people have their own opinions and disagree, we start calling people names? Also Why do you have to come out and say you're not nuts? Does someone you know think you're nuts or have referred to you as being nuts? See, I like the story of Socrates. I think therefore I am. Have you every read it? You should before you start saying what you are or are not!

2. Why are they a spineless chump?

3.Explain to me why I should agree with you! Tell me why Garden and Ivers make less than Helton and Charron? Tell me why we should be paying P.E. teachers more than the science, math, reading, and every other department that teaches our children, something that can excel them in the workforce. And these teachers have be around probably 30 years as well. Not all of them but a majority of them have.
For instances, Eddleman teaches interior design, cooking, and how to be an adult and what it takes and the costs of being an adult.
Clinebell teaches science and in a way children love so they can grasp it when they get to high school and then college. And Math goes hand and hand with science.

Again tell me without name calling why I should agree with you about P.E. teachers making more than many of these teachers? And justify why Helton and Charron make more than Ivers and Gardner?

Your name calling by the way discredits you Immeditately and shows how Great our Educational System really is!! I hope the kids you teach do not disagree with you!

At least some people out there are still getting raises. I have worked for a company here in town for many years and while communicating with many of the other workers I have found I'm not the only one that has not received a raise for many years now! Absolutely NOTHING! The cost of living has skyrocketed over the past several years and for these people to think that their "workers" shouldn't be entitled to a raise is ridiculous. I could see if business was slow and each employee had to do this to keep our job I could see that, but, when business is hot and you can afford to purchase all sorts of new things and live lavishly for you and your family and take care of many other generation family members that want to live lavishly too but don't have the money to do so !!! To me it shows what you think of the people that make your business what it is!! We aren't worth "NOTHING"!

Just dont do it in Waterloo! Those teachers haven't gotten raises in a couple of years. And if you really think teachers are making more than long-term administrators you're crazy...

And a teacher with a Masters Degree and 30+ years of experience who coaches deserves to make more money than a teacher with a Bachelors and doesn't do extra activities...

So, your OK with a broke state paying out 85,00 plus, to teach kids field hockey and flag football. That's nice. These kids deserve better from this admin, and the teachers that are teaching science, math, and English should have more pay than any P.E teacher even with a Master's in Physical Education. Your just being funny.
What is not funny is how our Educational System ranks 17th globally. I didn't know it took a lot of education to hold a stop watch and tell kids to keep running or dress out for P.E. or you'll get a dress cut. Come on you can do better than that to defend why Borger's makes more than teachers teaching fields that excel our children s minds and prep them for college. Because lets face it 99.9 percent of these kids will not become pro-athletes.

P.E. is just a joke that is why the high school has early bird so kids can actually take real classes during the day.

Ha-ha Anonymous, they judged you because you called them out for name calling and asked them to give you reason's why you should agree with them. They marked you because they are a clueless bunch who resort to name calling instead of real debates. You just proved your argument to be correct, because you can't disagree with them without being called a name. Not one of them could justify why Helton and Charron make more than Gardner or Ivers! Keep up the good work.
