Who Lays Claim To Being The End Of The Erie Canal?

Full story: WGRZ Buffalo 18
State law is very specific on where the Erie Canal begins and ends. According to State Canal Law, Chapter 5, "Erie Canal" shall mean the portion of the canal system connecting the Hudson River at Waterford with ... Full Story

Assm.Schminger is correct the actual end of the canal is the Tonawanda Location as it is a navigable water system. The old Buffalo site is nothing more than symbolic and in reality is an exposed sewer drain.

Actions have consequences. If Buffalo filled in their end of the canal, I'm sure they benefited from that decision. However, now they are finding the decision also had a disadvantage. The city of Buffalo needs to take responsiblity for their actions; and stop trying to manipulate the truth. I think itís unfortunate that we have politicians (such as Mr. Hoyt) who think itís OK to change laws to reflect an UNTRUTH so that they can benefit financially. If Mr. Hoyt believes its OK to lie to get financial support, I wonder what else he thinks itís OK to lie about? Hatís off to Mr. Schimminger for standing his ground! Be responsible people! Honesty is the best policy.

Doesn't anyone see any connection here with Bass Pro and Buffalo now wanting this tax money from the State and Federal governments. The canal doesn't end there...Buffalo made sure of that years ago - just as "Integrity" says. Changing laws to suit your own needs and to benefit from that change financially is a load of BS --- where is that petition at so I can sign it?

Why are our leaders wasting more time and funds to argue over this? Is the canal able to be traveled into Buffalo? It's a simple question with a yes or no answer. An even better question would be is the canal used for commerce any longer? I'm pretty sure the answer is no and if that's the case why is Federal funds being used to subsidize the area? This is just another example of money being wasted because people think it's free money. Guess what it's still coming out of all our pockets in the beginning.

Spitzer should tell Buffalo all they have to do to get this signed is dig up the old canal so it really does end in Buffalo.

Saying the end of the canal is in Buffalo, when a boat would have to basically drive down the 190 for 15 miles is the epitome of Buffalo stupidity.

Tonawanda does a beautiful job with the canal and makes it a great destination for boaters. Taking that money away so you can call a destination that a boat could only reach on a trailer should never become law.

Well, this ranks right up there with the "lost pants" lawsuit and the "Star Burst candy is too chewy-I broke my teeth" lawsuit. Come on now!! I can't believe how money hungry our society is getting, and now we see something like this from our political leaders!! There are several miles between Tonawanda and Buffalo. Those several miles of Erie Canal were filled in. I think that unless the canal is dug up again, and filled with water to run to Buffalo, then the end is in Tonawanda. It meets up with the Niagara River, and the Niagara River runs to Buffalo. That should be the end of the story. Yeah, the old song, written in 1905, sings about the canal going to Buffalo. But that all changed, several years later, when the canal was filled in. The lyrics should be changed to "from Albany to Tonawanda."

Tonawanda maintains the western terminus of the Canal, hence they earn and deserve the money. Sam Hoyt wants or needs the money for Buffalo, so he's asking for it despite the fact that Buffalo has nothing to do with the western terminus of the Canal. Sounds kind of like socialism, doesn't it?

Buffalo needs to concentrate on their own waterfront. The Erie Canal is in Tonawanda.
Let's see them bring some of this so called business to the Buffalo waterfront.

So if the law stating that the canal terminates in Buffalo passes, will the canal get arrested for illegal termination?

Might as well make a joke out of it, since that's what this "law" is.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Let's see, I would like to see a row boat go to the end of the canal in buffalo. In my real life experience, it ended in Tonawanda. Pretending it isnt is the strangest thing I ever heard. What if this gets out to other parts of the world how silly we would look. And t his is a law? Is it possible to break this law? If so, how?

I lived in the city of Tonawanda for 11years and i was always taught her that the canal went into buffalo and then buffalo says they found the walls of it and it was even in the New York State History Books at school (im in middle school) and i was always told that the canal ran under Niagra Street and when the railroads became popular they barried it and made a street and had the canal empty into the river.

Tonawanda it is and that's where the Gateway Harbor and the great concerts are held. Sam Hoyt should focus on getting the tax base restored in Buffalo, the place is a total ghetto and shootin' gallery. Lots of blacks live in Buffalo and blacks aren't very good swimmers. So by that logic, the canal ends in Tonawanda because they didn't want anymore drowning down there in Buffalo. Twisted logic.....but it makes sense.

The Buffalo police officer who shot and killed that gangbanger the other night acted with courage and valor despite a chaotic situation. I hope all of WNY rallies behind this officer to support him during the ongoing investigation. Thanks to his quick action, accurate shooting, and braveness when confronted by three armed gunmen we can now rest easier knowing that a felon is about to be 6 feet under. God bless to all BPD and PBA.
