They only kick you out if you break the rules that you agree to on intake. If you break them...they can kick you out...it's clear upon entry.

I'm sorry about your son...
but you cant go blaming other people for your son's decisions...
the price of addiction is normally death. your son was playing a dangerous game. if he was in TC in the first place...he had issues. I know because I have been there... and if I had left or broken the rules and gotten kicked out...I probably would have died too. The addict has to participate in recovery...The responsibility lays on the addict.. it's not an overnight miracle. Its a process...that he apparently didn't want to follow...

no offense to you.... but it just doesn't make sense to blame the recovery program when the addict finally receives the consequences of his or her actions

To the lady that wanted to know about facilities in North Carolina...

I've heard GREAT things from that end.
I have a lifelong friend that went through the program and is back on track..(clean, married, family, job, etc.)

I've been through the program, and God works in spite of all the negative things that people are saying around here....it really just depends on the drive of the person going into to program...

This story is now being covered by CNN. What this means is...the state of NM will start cracking down on these unlicensed teen rehab facilities. This will affect TC of NM. It took the kids who were at the facility, victims of abuse and neglect, being brave enough to call authorities and filing reports. Governor Martinez is now fully engaged. This means....no more doing crappy things to kids. Its not over. Its just getting started. I have talked a ton over the past year to both Henry Varela and Sgt. Emmanual Gutierrez about TC of NM. They are on the radar. They do need victims to call, however, to get that girl's facility closed down and they need girls who were there more recently to call. But...the good news is the state is cracking down on these places and working towards legislation that will give them more authority to act on behalf of kids so the days of Lin and Kathy Hall's reign of terror is coming quickly to an end. YAY!! So glad...so so so glad.If you were the victim of abuse, please call the authorities to report it. Call the NM State Police and NM Dept of Child and Family Services. Their number will pop up when you google. Its so important they have your information.

I wa so hooked on drugs and blinded by my sin i didnt think any way but my own was right. Sister Kathy and Bro. Lin and even Sis Shelly their own daughter helped me turn my life around. To GOD be the glory i am changed. THANK U TEEN CHALLENGE OF NEW MEXICO. I am forever grateful. O n all the mess about school credits its a crock. I had no problems when i returned to dallas, texas. ACE is a credited type of home school in listed as one if the best in C.O. JESUS is the cure to fix all things. DO some soul searching before u speak against this place, it has done no harm to anyone. besides i scrubbed dumpsters with a toothbrush better than being 6ft under r in hell

reign of terror? Ate you kidding? I was at tc nm and Linn and Kathy hall are wanderful loving people. They ask for nothing in return. My family was poor and never paid a dime in fact they weren't able to even give me money for our monthly trips to walmart for necessities. Linn and Kathy paid for all of my things while I was there. They always showed love. All I've seen people complain about is scrubbing dumpsters. Yes that is a discipline they dole out. So what it builds character and teaches the girls to not break the rules. I think all the girls on here complaining are simply soft spoiled brats.

I went to the adolescent teen challenge center in New Mexico 7 years ago. They don't have student who get food stamps or anything like that letter. They only collect money from the parents based on what they can afford. They accepted several students who had literally nothing- they brought their clothing in cardboard boxes. Their parents couldn't afford to pay anything-and one of those people was there for 2 years. I know they truly changed my life, and never mentioned money or giving to them to me ever!
I attended tc nm in 1992 and I've been extremely shocked to read all the nasty things some people are saying. I'm glad to hear you had a good experience too! At first I was thinking it must have really went downhill since I was there. But after seeing a few positive comments from girls like you who were there long after me the more I think these girls complaining are simply a product of this spoiled soft generation we have now. Sister Kathy and brother Linn were wonderful during my stay as was the staff.

I tried to rely to Cindy Hall Ortiz comments but site wouldn't allow it. My daughter went to TC in Tijeras, NM in 1998. At that time it was a very good exp. for her. We have been considering sending my granddaughter there but after seeing these things we are going to seek another option. So sorry to see this

Christians organizations can start out with good intentions but become controlling and cultish...that's when people get hurt. Let's not bash these kids who are sharing their concerns. These kids have been harmed enough by life, we owe them a spiritually safe and godly place to recover. Spiritual abuse IS real...happens a lot- is deadly- condemned by Christ (Mt 23). If the fruit of the Spirit is in operation...awesome but if we're in control, rigidity and manipulation...that is NOT of God and should never be defended.
I'm sorry more are not receiving this person's story. We should be more humble and open to correction...it's easy to get into the flesh.

If it was the last place to go, I would NOT go back. It is not what they advertise, boarderline criminal and fraudulant.
No job training, no church membership once you graduate, no skills no sobriety skills nothing.
The staff and McClain are wacked, the worst of all "Pastor Sam". I wouldn't let him counsel my dog.
The so called pastors there are the mail order type, no outside training, no couseling training nothing but TC brainwashing. That's why they have to stay there.
If you are looking to stay sober go to AA, NA etc. These are proven, reliable programs and have worked for me.
I tracked Muskegon TC's success rate when I was there. They have a graduation rate of less than 10% and a sobriety rate of less than 2%. Ask them to give you details of "their" success study they so quickly quote. They will not give you any details.
They have alarms on the doors and windows to keep you in. Check with the local police dept. They will tell you the truth.
Please do your homework before sending yourself or anyone else there.
TJTJ, please send us your story to [email protected] We are spreading the news about the atrocities that this organization is responsible for.

We do now have written confirmation that Lin and Kathy Hall, Executive Directors for NM Teen Challenge were in fact cited for substantiated abuse and neglect of children by New Mexico CYFD (Child Protective Services). This will show up on a background check. The concerning thing is that they still operate a female facility in Tijeras, NM and we have been told they are attempting to re-open the boy's facility in Clayton, NM. If the Hall's attorney has anything in writing from NMCYFD showing they were never cited by NM CYFD for substantiated abuse and neglect, they may feel free to produce an original document substantiating this claim or a certified copy.

I think you went there before they started doing crazy stuff. There is ample documentation to substantiate extensive and lengthy history of abuse and neglect of children and in fact we now have information in writing showing they were cited by NM CFYD for substantiated abuse and neglect. If it helped you to be there, that is good. That is really really good. Many others cannot say the same unfortunately.

Might want to check out this facebook page before sending your child to TC of NM for sure but any TC.
There are Affidavits from former students and staff posted that you should review.

https://www.facebook.com/ParentsAgainstTeenCh...

And as a rule of thumb, I wouldn't recommend sending your child, friend, or relative anywhere that doesn't allow regular private parent/child phone calls and random unannounced, unscheduled parent visits. Its your child. You have the right and responsibility to inspect your child's living quarters, well being, and treatment without the presence of hovering staff. If there is nothing to hide, no facility should have a problem with this. If they do, take your child somewhere where they allow you to check on your child without announcing you are coming and allow you to inspect the premises, your child's condition, school work, School records, medical records and so on without any push back or interference. Also, any good facility will work to include family in the rebuilding process...not cut them off. TC of NM cuts family off from students, limits communication, and tells students they should want nothing to do with family because family made them "sin". Any good facility or program will work to rebuild family relationships, not tear them apart. Family support is crucial to success once students graduate and enter back into real life. If that has been destroyed or hampered in any way by a program, it creates just one more obstacle in healing and success.

I have a niece who "Lord willing" will be going into the Teen Challenge program. I pray that she will come to know Jesus thru Teen Challenge. She called me asking for help.(I have not heard from her for two years) I told her Teen Challenge is what I have to offer her and thats all. My sister in law was killed 13 years ago on the very day "Marie" called me. It was drug related. I don't believe in coincidences. Please pray for my niece. She says she will go into the program.

I am not a teen but an addict and alcoholic. I have a friend in the west coast that has tried many times to get me to connect u before death is the next call my family will endure. I lost my husband 11 months ago, my bio dad 2 months before and my step dad of 41 years 3 days before my bio on dad. I am at the end of feeling that I dont care, I want to care although I truly think those are just words. Or, going through the motions. I am hooked on Percs and Valium with daily alcohol from when I wake until I pass out and I get upset when I do wake up. I won't to give up but there must be something in me that wants to live. Anyway I am too old to writing to teen challenge as they need help.

Cyndi,
I'm so sorry that they did that to you. You know, though, that doesn't surprise me. I was a student there for 3 years about 10 years ago. They truly do awful things to those poor girls. First off, the "academic curriculum" is not real. They give a "diagnostic test" to the students and put them in incredibly low classes (I'm not kidding...like starting with 2nd and 3rd grades). I understand SOME may be so far behind that it MAY be necessary, but most of the time, that is not the case. Still, most girls were automatically put in these low courses because the staff and Kathy/Lin are not able to "help" because they didn't know how to do simple pre-algebra. First off, that is a red flag. They claim we would get a high school diploma? Yeah, don't bet on it. Every single girl that I've spoken to were rejected in college applications because it wasn't "real". I am lucky that I got into college...I am not even sure how I that happened, as that was 6 years ago. I studied my butt off to get my degree because they hindered me in their "high school".
Secondly, there is definitely inappropriate behavior on Lin's behalf. I am a witness to him kissing minors on the mouth, grabbing their butts, and trying to get alone with them.
Thirdly, and most importantly, they are deceptive nut jobs. Cleaning rat-infested dumpsters and trailers (no exaggeration) as punishment for ridiculous things (not smiling, not finishing sermon notes on time, etc), paying their staff practically nothing (not even minimum wage) for their work, and Kathy literally yelling at the girls for not having good enough "goals" in their devotion study lessons ( I was berated many times for not having good enough goals). On "ministry trips", we would have to dress up , put on gobs of makeup, and give a testimony in from of a church of how TCNM has changed us to be better people. Kathy's goal was to deceive the congregation into giving to this cult. Of course, the congregation gave because they knew no better...essentially we were forced to lie to these people. I was never happy and Kathy would tell me that my parent's didn't love me and that they didn't want me home. I was getting over my parent's divorce...going through typical teenage years. Yet, they still treated me like I was trash. I hate how they call themselves "Christian". It's a disgrace. This is definitely a cult in which Kathy and Lin try to control how you think (you're wrong, they're right and they'll let you know that through a dumpster cleaning), what you watch (only Fox News), and what you believe in (their radical "doctrine"). It does not leave you prepared for the real world.
I feel awful for the girls who are still there. I knew many girls who wanted to leave and that Kathy and Lin didn't even notify their parents that they had gone/did not give the student any money to get to a bus. It's all about greed. Although it is about donations, Kathy and Lin have a beautiful house with several vehicles, while the girls live in a rat-infested trailer. Use deductive reasoning, and that is where the monetary donations go to. That place needs to get shut down. The only thing it is helping is making the girls jaded by religion.
Cyndi, I hope you get your son back. Are you still fighting for it? I will keep you in my prayers that you get your son back. I remember him...he was such a sweet little boy. I hope your youngest (he was a such a cutie, too) isn't too hurt by this situation. Best of luck, Cyndi!
I don't know who you are but you said it really well. It's really sad. Boys center did get shut down now right?

I just wanted to say something real quick. Having a tbt moment. I read messages from girls who attended back in 92 or whatever and I am thinking "did we go to the same place?"
The Halls got burnt out or something and things just aren't right over there. Things aren't what they seem on the surface. There is a beginning and an end to everything and it's just time for them to leave. They stand up infront of churches and say things we do like cook, clean, etc yes all those things were good but there was a very ugly side to it as well. Do you know that feeling as a kid you got this feeling like something isn't right but you have no authority or credibility to stand up for yourself cuz your just a kid. It was like that but worse and all the time. As troubled teens we were high risk and super emotional. Some of us darker than others ha ha but we were all just dealing with a lot of stuff that happened to us. Many of us had a really rough start in this life. There were some girls who were very innocent though and their parents just didn't want to deal with them so off they went. Anyways I don't want to get far off the subject. I just know things weren't right there and probably still are not. There is always going to be a place in my heart for Kathy and even Leslie. I poured my heart out to them and they were all I had. But still things were just not right. Don't send your child to TCNM until they have new directors and are fully in the clear. That's my recommendation. I fully support Teen Challenge and especially the one near me where I live now. It's an adult women's center. I bought a cross from them the other day. I think some of the people who critize our complaints think we must be "back sliden" or something but it's not the case. Things just were not right and many of us had years of anger towards our parents or whoever that took time to get over.
Cindi I hope all is well and God bless. God is always in control and no matter what has happened or will happen it will be ok. I do hope things are going in your favor though.

Don't send anyone to Teen Challenge. Find another place and there are many alternatives that are better. Just because some good comes from something doesn't make it okay. Abuse and/or neglect are never ever acceptable. Just because some do well, doesn't excuse bad behavior. Find another place for your niece. You are gambling with her very life if you send her to TC. You've been told of the problems. You know. Its Russian Roulette to send her hoping she'll be one who can handle the abuse and neglect with God's name on it. That's not right. That's really really not right to put her in that situation.
