Teen Challenge Exposed!

This is a link to a petition asking Congress to pass HR 3126. This bill would give the Department of HHS oversight to teen rehab facilities with 2 or more students. Desperately needed legislation!!
Non-profit privately run facilities are getting away with abuse and neglect because as it stands right now, authorities have no oversight or jurisdiction over these facilities if they do not receive state or federal funds. This has been the case with TC of NM. Despite the fact that authorities in NM desperately want intervene on behalf of kids, the laws limit what they can do. Please sign this petition so there is some legal authority to prevent abuse and neglect at these types of facilities nation wide. Thanks!!!!

My son is going thru the program now and it is amazing the change in him in just a few weeks. We specifically asked him if he was being treated well and he said he was. Believe me, he wouldn't stay if he wasn't.

It's about wanting to get better and doing what it takes for that to happen.

I think that is fantastic!! Some Teen Challenges are doing great things. They aren't all bad. Some have problems and need a change in leadership. For sure there should never ever be abuse or neglect of any kind at any teen rehab facility.

The problem of abuse at teen rehab facilities is becoming more well known. Law and Order SVU has just featured a show of abuse at a private school that went on for 30 years before being exposed. I've come across at least three non- profit organizations that are exposing abuse and neglect at teen rehab facilities and are working to change laws so that kids are better protected. Info is below:

If it was the last place to go, I would NOT go back. It is not what they advertise, boarderline criminal and fraudulant.
No job training, no church membership once you graduate, no skills no sobriety skills nothing.
The staff and McClain are wacked, the worst of all "Pastor Sam". I wouldn't let him counsel my dog.
The so called pastors there are the mail order type, no outside training, no couseling training nothing but TC brainwashing. That's why they have to stay there.
If you are looking to stay sober go to AA, NA etc. These are proven, reliable programs and have worked for me.
I tracked Muskegon TC's success rate when I was there. They have a graduation rate of less than 10% and a sobriety rate of less than 2%. Ask them to give you details of "their" success study they so quickly quote. They will not give you any details.
They have alarms on the doors and windows to keep you in. Check with the local police dept. They will tell you the truth.
Please do your homework before sending yourself or anyone else there.
You clearly didnt read the handbook or you would have known that this place does not give you any vocational training for you idiots this means job training. before you go shooting off your mouth why not learn more about those you are badmouthing. It may actually make you look a bit more intelligent. As for counseling your dog, well I would say your dog would benifit more from the counseling than his idiotic owner. One more thing learn how to spell and use the English language.

You are really mean, e.Wayne Mays, Jr.. This kind of stuff right here contributes to giving Teen Challenge a bad name. Could make your point a nicer way.

Teen Challenge can be a great program its just that some people running the different ones have no business being in leadership. I hope that begins to change. Change cannot come without confrontation. The truth.....and only the truth sets us free.

I was involved in TC for a long time. What people fail to realize is those running the program have major life issues too. There has to be more accountability with some who struggle with walking in the flesh. Because they were alcoholics and drug addicts, a lot of the same life issues remain unless dealt with on a regular basis. Some of these guys are too proud to be teachable and it shows. I believe the ones who have a real heart for those in recovery, are the best leaders. These are the ones that are selfless and patient and really believe in the changing power of the Holy Spirit. They believe that Jesus does make us a new creation and that God is Love. Even with the Lord in it, men are human and fallible. There must be a tight checks and balance system with plenty of accountability for these leaders and pastors. Some have very ugly attitudes that do not reflect the love of Christ. it's sad because it gives the wrong impression of how powerful Jesus is and how drastically he can change our life. On the flip side... you get people who come into the program with destructiveness and wrong attitudes. They are not willing to do the hard work. The hard work is ugly and takes discipline (most addicts have not learned either of these). Then they complain and blame everyone for their lack of willingness to do what is required. It's a two way street people.....

My name is Christian Hill, I went Teen Challenge, I hated it, and everyone there, I am now 23, It has been 8 years, but now God has knocked on my door, I saw demons cast out of two kids when I was there, The kid woke up with claw marks on his back, and screaming in the middle of the night, and all the fire alarms going off, Man the devil is real, He has been coming at me lately, I mean literally coming at me, I had something I could not see chocking me, and It was real man. This is all real, Read the Bible, there are parts where people where put in bad places it seemed, but it was all God's plan, He has to break you down to lift you up, and build you back the way he wants. Pastor Dave had the spirit of God, because if he did not, he could not cast away any demons. Its rare, and I have just started doing it also. Yes, wrong things happened there, but it was the drill Sargents, and not the actual staff, The staff really cared. Put it behind you, It's over now, If you never suffered, than you cant enjoy peace. I say peace to you all in Jesus Name! forgiveness is key to being free!

As the wife of a Teen Challenge student, I have nothing but wonderful things to say. This program gave me back my husband who the enemy through alcohol meant to steal. Satan is the accuser of the brethren! I do not doubt that things have happened to some people but please remember that God is at work at Teen Challenge. Lives are being restored, marriages made whole again and men and women getting their lives back. My husband did his first four months in Syracuse, NY and is still in his ten month training in Rehrersburg, PA known as The Mountain, I can't speak highly enough about these two places. The men of God in both these locations have challenged and molded and shaped my husband, through the word of God, into a man of character. To see where he was before the program compared to now brings me to tears. Thank you to the men and women who everyday give of themselves so that my family can be made whole and my husband freed from the chains of addiction.

Also, I have never been asked for money from either program. I explained when my husband went into the program that we just couldn't afford it, the director looked right at me and said, " Sister never think of it again, you take care of your family". My husband has also been fed very, very well, so much so his pants are tight.

I was honestly curious how this topic was doing. I have nothing to say to the former students you either know what I'm talking about when it comes to the abuse or your simply still brainwashed. For parents who are financially distressed and wondering if you should send your child to the center. Well if you are not already convinced not to then nothing I can say will change your mind. Contact will be very limited. When you do talk to your kiddo it will be a pre written convo that is approved and a staff member will remain on the line while you speak. They will not give you time alone (visit) until they are sure that brain is well brainwashed so you only talk about things that glorify them. I love The Lord. I always have. You don't know my story and frankly it doesn't matter. I would love nothing more than to see parents work on themselves to help their children rather than trust a complete stranger who has well earned their rep. When we chose to be parents we accept the responsibility to train, educate, protect, love and guide our kids. I am a mother of two and I put my kids first. I'm sorry for those who are struggling with their kids but they are exactly that kids. Remember that just because its free doesn't mean it's good. That should be everyone's first clue right there. It's not an option. Please don't put any more hurt into your child's life by giving up on them and sending them to strangers who twist Gods word. Stick it through. You aren't alone out there and you parents are going to have to dig deep within yourself to help them. This means no time for you. Gods love isn't bound inside some facility so if that's the answer you seek for them then you teach em to find it yourself and spare them from this place.

Klevya,I think you are throwing the baby out with the bath water. Parents make mistakes. I raised both my children in the Lord and they still strayed. They are now adults and have made their own choices. We cannot control our children's walk, no matter how much we prepare them spiritually. Are you children young or adults? Either way, no one is blessed with perfect children, because we are all imperfect, therefore the need for Christ. We all need help many times in our walk. God has placed other believers in our path because it is iron sharpening iron. It is the way God created man...to rely on one another. I say we definitely keep these ministries accountable to behave correctly. But, we do not completely attack so many that are doing God's will. I do not agree with everything Teen Challenge does. I do not even like some of the people involved, but I know that the Holy Spirit has used them to help many hurting people. The problem is, most people complain but never do anything to help with the problems. Let's be proactive and godly. Let's help these centers to remain accountable and pray for them to always do God's will. Because humans are fallible, there will always be an element of evil everywhere you go. This applies to your own home. Be very careful not to judge, lest ye be judged under the same measure. Instead, let us encourage one another to do what is right and pleasing in the Lord. Ask yourself, "How much praying have I done?" "how much good have I done to counteract any evil I see?" "Have I considered helping those parents who struggle with these hurting children?" Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Let us continue to love each other in the Lord, for the Lord's sake.

Miri,
The fact of the matter is there are some good Teen Challenge facilities. Then there are some bad ones with terrible leadership and there is documented abuse and neglect. Its bad enough when a child is abused by someone who has some sort of a substance abuse problem or someone who does not pretend to be a Christian. Its even worse when someone is abusive who puts God's name on that abuse by pretending to be or representing themselves to be "Christian". That makes the abuse so much worse. I hope everyone understands that just because there are good Teen Challenge facilities that doesn't mean there aren't some with significant problems and should discount valid, documented claims of abuse and/or neglect. There are. There very much are. There are kids and people who have suffered dearly as a result. It isn't helpful for people to simply become accusatory and hateful. God works in spite of bad things. He even promises to use that evil for good and I believe He does that. But when you are hateful to people who claim they were abused and they are hurting because of it and claim to be "Christ Like" you are furthering their pain and really making their point for them. They are now against all things Christian because that is what they think God is like. The worst thing you can do is be nasty to them. Its painful what they have been through. I've heard that pain on the other end of the phone when talking to them. Don't discount people who have been hurt just because you were lucky enough to go to a good facility with good leadership. Try to show them who God really is. They have seen enough "ugly" with God's name on it.

I hope you read this. I don't know who you are, but your last question concerns me. I have affidavits and emails indicating there was sexual abuse. There is an ongoing investigation into this by more than one agency. If you'd be willing to talk to me or authorities, confidentially, please contact me at [email protected] I'm so so so so sorry ....they did this stuff to you. I cannot explain how sorry I am for what you have been through.

I do not specifically know about the Muskegon TC, but I will tell you there are some great Teen Challenges out there. The bad ones are bad (I speak from experience), but the good ones provide a place where miracles happen and you can have the best time of your life! Obviously there is a reason your parents want to send you. I want to encourage you to look honestly at yourself. With God's help you can make changes and now while you are young is the time to do it. When you get older the consequences for things get a lot worse! I would be willing to talk to your parents and tell them what things to look out for. Regardless of what happens it is time to make a radical change in your life! I will pray for you.

Sorry...this is actually the post I wanted to address. That last question, "Were any of you molested?" concerns me not just based on this post but on affidavits and emails I've obtained from girls that were not at TC of NM at the same time and don't know each other. Something is up with that. That substantiates claims of sexual misconduct. The only way to stop it is to contact authorities. Otherwise, it just keeps happening.

I feel Truly sorry for the other people who were negatively affected by Teen Challenge of New Mexico, I will pray for you. It has taken me a long time to heal from the damage. Not all Teen Challenges are bad and the concept is good, but the directors of Teen Challenge of New Mexico are very sick and
warped people. You do not help anyone by degrading them and controlling them. No one who meets them, is in a service they are doing, or visit the Center have any idea what truly goes on there. Thank God that his love reaches down and touches the lives of girls in spite of them. Were any of you molested?

There are legislative efforts both on the state level in many states but specifically New Mexico and on a Federal level that would allow for more accountability and oversight of teen rehab facilities in general. This effort is to protect kids who are trying to get on their feet with dignity that might be at a "ministry", "faith based", "non-licensed", facility that does not currently accept state or federal funds. These organizations, such as Teen Challenge have become a breading ground for abuse and neglect because there is no accountability and there is no oversight. Technically, the national Teen Challenge office and the Assemblies of God have oversight, however much like the Catholic Church, they have simply worked very hard to cover up problems rather than address them effectively, professionally, and act in the best interest of the basic human rights of children. Because of this, NM state and Federal legislators are taking corrective action in order to prevent abuse at teen rehab facilities to ensure the safety of attendees. If you have been a victim of abuse or neglect, whether it be nutritional neglect, education neglect, or medical neglect please get in touch with me at [email protected] We've collected statements, affidavits and testimony from victims of abuse while at TC of New Mexico and have forwarded that on to legislative and investigatory bodies. I know its a little scary but the only way to stop it is to provide the information needed in order to address these problems and you aren't alone. Many have already come forward. The interesting thing about NM is the stories vary a little based on a person's specific situation but most claims are the same even though information is coming from people who weren't there at the same time, don't know each other, have never met or talked to each other, and could not have concocted some "story" just to hurt the Halls. That lends tremendous credibility to the information we've gathered. Hope ya'll will be in touch. There is strength in numbers.

Where there is little or no accountability, people can behave badly without consequences. I am overwhelmed by how many organizations geared to youth and children attract pedophiles and people who abuse their authority. Cyndi, I applaud your work to help these youth heal. They need a voice and they need someone who still loves the Lord, and says,'These people do not reflect who God is". Kudos. I still say this does not cancel out the great work God continues to do through those who are walking right with Him.
