What was not mentioned in the article (and seems to be conveniently forgotten) was that for the past 8 years the Vermont State Hospital has been decertified by CMS (Medicare) due to poor physical plant conditions and for its "quality" of care of care given to its patients. Even after numerous attempts to be recertified, the hospital still failed. This lack of certification has cost the Vermont taxpayers millions and millions of dollars because of the lost Federal funding that was to pay for the care of these patients. That was a ridiculous and unnecessary financial burden that taxpayers of a small rural state were forced to take on.

The lack of adequate mental health services in Vermont is criminal.
A new facility should have been funded and built years ago.
