Aircraft Design Mistake

I wonder why all aircrafts have the wings attached to the bottom half of its body? Even more puzzling for me is: why the engines are connected at the lower side of the wings?
I believe that for safety and efficiency the wings must be on the very most top part of the body as it is the case with all birds. For giving more clearance underneath the wings, engines should be resting on the top side of wings.
Do you agree with me? If not please say why?
