Lived here for half my childhood, moved away, and am in for a visit, and can't help but notice: The beach at Pike Lake is dead. Literally, my kid and I are the only ones swimming. What gives? When I was a pup, all summer long this place was full of people sun-up to sun-down. It's free, a great way to beat the heat, and... IT'S FREE! Where's today's generation of poor kids? Where's the rack full of bikes and cannonballers lined up at the diving board? What gives??

That lake has literal turds floating in it! The geese are not controlled and the piles of dung will squash through your toes if u go barefoot. Then Center Lake looks nice but it's where the druggies hang out.

Hello, Old Hometown(s)! Summer's in full swing, and with it comes that same old nostalgia.

I was just telling the guys here at work what a treat it was to live in Warsaw as a kid. Looked up the Satellite View on Google Maps and showed them Center & Pike Lakes - the 2 beaches, the piers you can dive from... and all the other little lakes in the area. Man, I used to love being able to swim almost every day with my friends at any number of spots, make new friends, just hang out and soak in the summer (as if we could could somehow save some of it for those epic winters back in the day)! I wonder if you folks know how unique a place you have there! Here in Kentucky, there are few natural lakes, and almost none with beaches. City pools and man-made waterparks just aren't the same to me.

I was also remembering hanging out, playing pool and video games at Earl's Billiards on Winona. Last time I checked, it was long gone, but had some fun times there, too, minus a ton of quarters.

Is the Eastlake Skating Ring still around? I'm definitely too old and uncoordinated to survive skating anymore, but that was another place that I recall being a blast as a kid...

I remember the dirt track at the fairgrounds, and going to watch those fun, noisy races when they still had them throughout the summer. That came to a stop while I was still living there, though :-( Some influential people across the lake just didn't appreciate it all that much.

So many great memories. Few bad ones, too, and no place is without a share of shady stuff going on nowadays, or even back then. But still, looking forward to my annual summer visit, just the same!

Where I live now, many say the same. But despite these more dangerous substances taking over where mere alcoholism once reigned, it's still much the same as it's ever been: People that seek an external means of fulfillment or escape will find it wherever they can, and if that means is both profitable and addictive, there will be trouble.

It's easy to see the worst in communities and people, and the ugliest of their problems, as all-encompassing when that's all the news seems prone to report. It's easier still if you yourself have been touched by or currently are mired in families or social circles or neighborhoods rife with those problems.

But I still have family in your area, and know from my own sometimes extended visits, from them, and from common sense, that the sort of people involved in such troubling things are still the vast minority of the overall populace there. They are far outnumbered by regular folks just trying to get by, with many succeeding, and most doing so without the aid of substance abuse.

They're just not interesting enough to make or dominate the news, and maybe not so apparent if you're prone to focusing on the negative :-)
