I am looking for some historical information on the Old Saw Mill on Mill Street.
1. Besides being called Old Saw Mill, did it have another name?
2. What year did it shut down?
3. Who owned it?
4. The homes along 1st, 2nd and 3rd Mills street were company homes, who lived in the large one at the begining of 1st Mill Street?
5. When did they start selling the homes to the public?

Don,

Have you looked in any of the Walter C. Casler series of books on the logging industry throughout the area?

Thanks for the response Alan,

Not yet, I just heard from the Warren Library that Book No. 8 from this series has some information that may help. I am going to see if I can locate this book and the Historical Collections of Sheffield Township by Bruce A. Smith. I currently live in San Diego, CA so I am not sure if these are available out here.

I have some of the books, but I'd have to dig for them. I see them on Ebay now and then - if you knew which one you needed. Also go on AbeBooks.com . Good luck.

i think the house at 1 Mill St is for sale (if it's the one you're talking about.)$110,000

go to: www.wccbi.org

down on the left side it says "properties available". you can search for residential properties. just search in Sheffield. there's only about a dozen houses and the Mill St house is the first one on there.

i asked my dad. he said the saw mill was owned by CPL. he also said that the first house on lower Mill Street was the office building for the lumber company, and that one of the rooms is probably still a vault.

CPL stood for The Central Pennsylvania Lunber Company. The first large house was the company office and did have a vault in the basement. My father was a child watching the cement being poured for the foundation of the bulding. He grew up on 2nd Mill Street in a large family, most of whom all worked at the mill. If you do a Google search for the Central Pennsylvania Lumber Company or check out the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum in Galeton, PA you can get more facts. AS a note the CPL mill in Sheffield was the largest saw mill (by board feet of lumber) east of the Mississippi when it closed. It was shut down because they ran out of timber to cut.
