We vacationed in Murphy 10 years ago and there was 1 restaurant in the entire town. It was horrible. And the fact that you can't buy beer in Murphy was crazy too. I'm glad to see it's finally growing.

There was more then 1 restaurant, which did you go to? There also was beer you just had to know where to go to buy it, I preferred it that way:-)

Dickey first opened Mainstreet at the old location but later sold it to the new owners in which the building was leased from Dickey. Dickey wanted him out to build his Capt. D's so he doubled the rent.. Real peach of a guy. Dickey also made a stink about the new location being called Mainstreet, this is why current business is called Mainstreet USA.. He also owned the old steakhouse across from Wal-Mart and left a "your fired" note on the door for all the staff to find so he could build a new hotel. This is why we don't eat at the Capt D's and I'm happy to see very few cars at Dickey's Hampton Inn.. Karma..

Sure, only one resturant....that's a real zinger. would be better if true. As for the beer, who cared? Wine and Liquour has been on sale here for over 20 years.

Georgia Beer was twice the alcohol and most locals would drive there to get it instead of Andrews anyway!

Ga beer and NC beer have the same alcoholic content.

Thanks fpr the information I have always heard stories on Steve Dickey's dealings and would be very careful with any business dealings involving him.

It was a steakhouse type of buffet. I think it was near the WalMart. I also remember there was a Hummer convention in town that weekend. LOL.

Murphy is one of the most beautiful towns I've ever been in. The scenery was breathtaking.

I assumed there was no alcohol allowed in town because all of the roads are shaped like corkscrews and at 90 degree angles. I could barely handle them completely sober.

It's been my dream to buy a cabin on a lake in Murphy, but being poor is kindof ruining that for me.

who wants to drive 20 miles to find beer who would ever like it that way I'm glad this town is growing too.... I know of the locals most of them at least hate the Floridians but if it wasn't for us Floridians there wouldn't be much growth or money going around in this town. It is beautiful n i thought ppl would b much nicer here but not any better than the big city I mean most people are nice but the good old boy system locals just don't want any outsiders and they're not afraid to show their discontent with outsiders.... it's a shame that people don't really want growth in this area because it could bring lots of jobs and money into an area that could really use it just like the new casino they want to build most people are against it locals anyways and that would bring so many jobs and so many people to town and bring revenue to the town GROWTH is a good thing it will still be a beautiful place and it won't get overpopulated all the land is spread out it'll just be a area with jobs n not so much poverty n give everyone a chance to make something of themselves instead of a select few powerful named families with all the money...small businesses would prosper here if ppl would accept change n growth there would b enuf tourists n pple that live here to spread their business and money around and businesses would stay open

Your comment illustrates EXACTLY why people dont care for SOME outsiders! You act like a pompous ass & youll be treated like such! Also why do you want to leave a place just to try to turn it into the place you left?

Murphy NC is a beautiful small town. I go there to escape from all that comes with a large city. Traffic, noise, pollution, crime. But I am worried about the crime now in Murphy:

I visit Murphy several times a month. I am very concerned by a robbery that recently happened in Murphy. A house was broken into. A house that would seemly not have items of much value. But this house did have a safe. A safe that only 6 people were aware of. A safe with items valuing over $10,000. A safe that was hidden. Of the people who were aware of this safe, 4 were employed by Cherokee county sheriff department. Although the safe had been in the residence for a while, exactly one week after members of sheriff department became aware of the safe - someone broke into the house. This someone broke into the exact room of the safe and only took the safe. Nothing else was touched, no signs of any kind of search for valuables. Not the laptop out on a table. Not the new TV. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but...

Alan,

It's regrettable what your father & uncle did to you.

Blaming others, however, is stupid, wrong, and not what Jesus taught you.

Main Street has always had the best hamburgers in town at the best prices. I ate many $2 hamburger combos from the drive through location back in the day. Craving it now!

This is so sooooo true, Alan! Thank you!! Go away, Floridians. We don't want your money OR your way of life. Don't come in here and try to change everything to the way YOU want it! We love our life here, esp before dogooders came in trying to change everything! Money and shopping are all not that damn important to us, tho seems like all you think about. YOU may want growth, we DO NOT!! Accept it or go away!!

We don't want you, or tourists, or casinos, or growth, or change. But ESECIALLY don't want jerks like you who think they know better what is "good for us". What is a "shame" is that the good people of Murphy have to put up with you and your fellow Floridian asses in our beautiful town. It is beautiful just the way it IS. If you can't live with that, LEAVE.

I moved here from 'up north', paid over $200K cash for a house so that a born and raised Murphy family could move to Florida. I wonder who is the bigger fool, them or us? I love it here, sure it would be nice to not have to drive 2 hours for some brand name shopping, and it would be nice if people would take care of their pets, but there's not a whole lot I'd trade to not be here cuz where I'm from, the people are rude and crude and for the most part, people seem nicer here. Maybe they talk behind my back because I'm not from 'here' and I hope the jerks that post on this forum aren't any of the seemingly friendly people I've met so far, I would hate to think they are polite and kind to my face only. That wouldn't be very Christian, would it?
By the way, if you want an excellent burger, try Burger Boys, across from The Sweet Tooth.

If by questionable, you mean really good tasting, then I don't mind. Did you want to explain that comment or just leave it hanging, like you know something that others don't?

The comment is self-explanatory. I have eaten there. Once. There are 3 restaurants in Murphy where, at one time or another, you can get some questionable food. They are all on 64 west of Mickey D's. On the other hand, there sre restaurants where I have eaten for 20 years and never gotten a bad meal.
