Why doesn't anyone do anything to change living conditions there?
Who owns all the empty buildings uptown?
Why isnt there any new business opening?

The residents gave up a long time ago. A large percentage of the people are on some kind of drug and receive some type of government compensation or hand-out. The few who do care, can't do it on their own. Most of the younger groups leave the county to seek work. The county has no future and is dieing along with the people. Visitors I've spoken with, all seem to say the same thing "the most depressed place they've ever seen or been."

Most of the smart people have moved. Most that remained behind just don't care. You cross the state line and all you hear is negativity about McDowell County. Why do you think property values for a same size house in Virginia verses West Virginia is 2 or 3 times higher in value?

I choose the stay here and I DO NOT RECIEVE ANY FREE BEE'S.My husband and I both work and no we don't do drugs.(we also have all of our teeth and visit the dentist regularly...lol) Personally, I love this county. We love to hunt, fish and ride four wheelers. We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Yes, I will be the first the agree that it has problems but every place has its own type of problems. Instead of just driving through town, ride through the woods and enjoy natures beauty. Not all of the people here are bad. It just seems like the bad ones are the only ones remembered. I can say this though, in this horrible town of ours, I have witnessed kindness from all types of people. I watched an elderly lady pushing her groceries to her car and one of the town druggies helped her without anyone asking. The woman offered money to this person and they refused it. Even though they have problems, not all of them are bad.
