Very interesting to hear of the changes. Few people know that, at the #2 Yukon bridge was a hugh slate dump and my step dad had it leveled' so that he could build the brick home, right at the bridge was the first home my Mother and her new husband lived in, it burned down and a Mrs Price died in the fire. My step dad build the Cinder block building on the corner. Lacy Griffith grandfather Rev Jack use to preach in my services around that area. I began preaching at age 13, after school in WV went off to College in Greenville, SC..Headed North and met a Recording Star JUANITA LONG and we married 50 yrs ago, Juanita traveled America singing and making more records. She has not slowed down even today.
Thanks for the up to date news from #2 Yukon, WV. Did you know my half sister Brenda Damron?

My Step Dad found #2 Yukon when he was contracted to build a block Pentecostal Holiness in 1947, at that time he was courting my Mother at War so when she married him they settled in #2 Yukon. Dad and Mom divorced in 1945. Both remarried.
Anyway, Step Dad Roy Damron built that brick home near the bridge after having a large slate dump leveled (1947. That old mines at the end of the bridge has quite a History story from the men killed there 1924 and the dead were carried to the old Warner's home to be ID.
I use to deliver the Welch News all over #2 Yukon. I went to Yukon School then on to War. Since I was a church going "kid" I was active in most all the churches in Mcdowell County. Some of the boys & girls in my time were The Furches, The Woodrow Smith's, The Rev Berlin Smith', The McCoy's, The Logans, The Head's, The Griffith's, The Whits's, Both King and Keene's, Short's and Paul Short was one of my best friends, but I like all those kids I went to school and lived round about there.
My cousin Bob Morrison was theater Manager at War and Mr. Mannie Shore the owner allow me to learn Motion Picture Projectors, I was Projectionist during my school years. I was in the newspaper as W.Va Youngest Motion Picture Projectionist. But, the church folks frown on going to movies in those days, "after all I had to have income".
I can honestly say that I never met a person I did not like especially round West Virginia. When I left W. Va. for College in Greenville, SC I never return there to live. I have heard from countless WVA folks over the years.
I remember Lacy Griffith and Jean (Gross) Griffith, and many others like the Mildred Oakes and family.

Hello, I am the grandaughter of Madge Foster that lived in Yukon #2 for many years. She is in very bad condition. She moved to Coalwood and is very very bad off. She is on a feeding tube, and cath. and has alzti, and cancer, and alot more. My aunt Linda hickson and Mother Sketter Stump care for her. She is still at home with round the clock care. She has been in this condition for 2 years now. And my aunt Joe Wright and Jr Wright have both passed away and Randy there son is still in Yukon. My mother still lives in Caretta. I am not sure of many people myself. I know the McCoys passed away too, and Peggy is their daughter and she lives in Coalwood too.

I hope this helps a little.

Keep my grandmother in your prayers.

We will be praying for your grandmother.
Thank you for the email.
I think the Wright boy married June Furches and they were living in Texas. June's brother Westley lives in NC he moved from Ohio to NC a few years ago.
I think The Ward's daughter bought the Damron Brick home ny the bridge at #2 Yukon. That small building on the property was built in 1953 and called "Brenda's Play House" there was a store in the basement of that home called "Brenda's Groc" and Mr. Damron tried having a theater down in that basement, I remember the Tex Ritter movie that ran there......But best of all THE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD was started in the basement of the Damron's Brick Home and Rev Berlin Smith was it's first pastor along with Rev Jim Mullins a young 13 year old pracher (Me).

On a visit at the old location, Juanita was scheduled to preach. Sister Logan came and as she walk in the church door complained that she had broken her toe earlier. My wife layed her hands on the foot, immediately the pain left she was healed. We have seen 1000 miracles in the 50 yrs we have been married and even before.
We do pastor and I have a 8 X 10 of Rev Berlin Smith hanging in my church here in Ohio.
Juanita Long Mullins
Juanita Long Mullins came into the world in Johnson County, Kentucky, near the town of Painesville, in the waning days of 1930. Music found a way into her life at a very early age and she began getting attention for her singing when she was just seven years old. The family attended the Church of God.
Juanita's parents later moved to Waverly, Ohio, and then to Richlands, Virginia where she graduated from high school in 1950 and attended Nursing school. Her producer manager was Eddy Ollikainen, who was also a guitarist on all of her recordings. A 1964 article indicates Eddie had a trio that backed her on her recordings. He was also helpful in getting her to record upon first hearing her sing. Juanita's publicity manager was a Howard Mobey, a newspaper editor in Ohio. She is an established writer and has
written for most of the Pentecostal Magazines and others. She wrote gospel tracts for three Tract Publisher in Minn, N.C. and Tenn.
Radio and TV has been a part of her ministry. From early years to now. Country music artists back in an early era often found themselves working with a sponsor whether on the radio or for their personal appearances. In Juanita's case, her personal appearances included many Ben Franklin stores in their music departments as well as other similar stores that back then were called "five and dime" stores. She made visits to many radio stations, all through the United States, tirelessly promoting her music.
Her popularity with the local folks was and is such that she was always in demand for funerals and weddings.
A 1964 article mentions that Juanita had published a song book of over 120 of her favorite hymns and many other songbooks published in her name. That same article mentions information about her recording self-penned, "Jesus Is Waiting For You" included background vocals by the Revelators, That record had the tune "The Man Of Galilee" on the flip side.
She had a hit tune during the Christmas of 1963 with her record of "Put Christ Back In Christmas" b/w "Christmas." That effort was backed by the vocals of the Gospelaires.
To this day, Juanita and her husband a McDowell WVA man, are pastor at a Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. On most Sunday mornings, Juanita herself can be seen leading the services. Even hip replacement surgery hasn't slowed her down one bit. She still goes out on the road. Juanita's family includes two daughters, Anita in NC and Sharon in Atlanta and sons,
Don a pastor in Tampa and Jimmy, Junior still single at age 28. All of the children are grown and living on their own.
On display at her church is a case of memorabilia from her career, including song books, records, recordings, TV tapes and other mementos.
Juanita and her husband have lived the life that they preach -- offering their home with a lot of help and support to over 100 foster children over a span of 40 years. She is no stranger to the Ohio Children Services where she appears in three counties with speaking on Adoption/Foster Parents.
They adopted two children. They love Children and still like being in touch often with their counties Children Services and friends there. They are always getting phone calls from their families especially Mother and Father's Days.
When asked to recount her life and career, she noted to her husband, "... life just flew by."

#1 Yukon Mine, Mar 1930
MINE EXPLOSION KILLS 2, ENTOMBS 9. WORKERS CUT OFF 4,000 FEET BACK IN SHAFT. HASTILY SUMMONED RESCUE CREWS HOLD LITTLE HOPE FOR TRAPPED DIGGERS.
PAIR ESCAPE UNHURT. VICTIMS BURNED BEYOND RECOGNITION; PIT FILLED WITH GAS, IS BELIEF. March 26. 1930 (AP) Two miners were killed and nine others were entombed today in an explosion in a heading of the Yukon, WV mine of the Crown Coal Co. here. The fate of the nine entombed has not been determined. Mine rescue crews were attempting to reach the entombed men.
There apparently was no fire in the workings.
Both of the dead men were burned beyond recognition. Members of the rescue crews believed there was little chance that the miners unaccounted for would be alive. The explosion was believed to have been caused by gas. It occurred 4,000 feet from the mouth of the mine.
The mine, opened in 1922, is a slope mine. Two hundred men are employed in it during the day and 25 at night. The blast occurred shortly after 2 a.m. The eleven men entombed were working in the ninth right heading where the explosion happened. Two others were at work behind the heading and were not aware of the accident. The electric power suddenly was cut off and the men sat down to wait until the power was restored. WHen the power remained off for three hours the two miners walked from the workings and it was learned then that an explosion had occurred.
The 11 entombed were cutters and scrapers. PAUL PAYES, a scraper, and STANLEY KENDREW, a cutter, were the two working in back of the ninth heading and were not aware of the disaster that beset their fellow workers until 4 hours later.
Inspector A. B. SPENCER, was directing rescue efforts. A mine rescue crew from the United States bureau of mines with headquarters at Pittsburgh, also was enroute to the scene.
