Does Jessie Jackson, who has called New York “Hieme Town”, a racial slur towards the Jewish community in New York on his soap box, after he was let off the hook with an apology. All I can say is Al Sharpton has got some balls to talk racist about ANYONE! Sharpton is a truly repulsive man. He has managed to lose even more elections than Ted Heath - having failed in his runs for the US Senate in 1988, 1992 and 1994 and in his run for the Mayoralty of New York City in 1997 (when he was beaten by Rudy Giuliani).

And lest he tries to attack Tom DeLay for his involvement with Jack Abramoff, he is in no position to lecture DeLay about propriety, Sharpton having been forced to repay $100,000 in public funds he received from the federal government for his (yes, you guessed it) unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign.

In an interesting development earlier this year it transpired that Sharpton seems to be related to the former US Senator Strom Thurmond (who famously stood for president as a Dixiecrat in 1948). Sharpton's great-grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, was a slave owned by Julia Thurmond, who grandfather was Strom Thurmond's great-great-grandfather. Coleman Sharpton was freed during the US Civil War - when the Republicans fought the Democrats to free the slaves. Maybe Sharpton will recognise that as a true achievement of the Republican Party in the debate with DeLay?

Sharpton's history of aggravating racial tension is every bit as disgusting as any neo-nazi thug. For example in 1987, a 15 year-old black girl, Tawana Bradley, alleged rape and assault by six white men, including police officers. Sharpton - a vociferous public critic of her alleged assailants - even accused one of the county prosecutors of rape. When it transpired Bradley had lied about the incident, Sharpton was successfully sued for slander and ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars.

His anti-semitism makes Alf Garnett seem a paragon of racial harmony, Sharpton having referred to Jews as "diamond merchants" and saying that "if the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house". This should come as no surprise. His fellow racemonger, Jesse Jackson, infamously described New York as "Hymie Town". Nice people, huh?

It's not just the Jews, though. Sharpton's ire was also aimed at a landlord who increased rents on a black record store owner when he said: "We will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business".

He then went on to offend Mormons in a ham-fisted attack on presidential candidate Mitt Romney such that he had to issue a grovelling apology of his own.

Sharpton likes to present himself as a latter day Martin Luther King. And yet one cannot help but feel that MLK would be appalled to be seen alongside someone with the base morals and appalling judgment of Al Sharpton. MLK's vision - one that millions of Americans share and which should form any libertarian's creed - was that people would be judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character and that everyone would be treated equally.

Equal treatment does not mean affirmative action, reverse discrimination, positive discrimination or whatever other term we are now supposed to use for what is, put simply, modern day racism.

There is a perfectly respectable intellectual case for saying that a Democrat should be elected to the presidency of the United States. I don't subscribe to that view but clearly a coherent argument can be made. Al Sharpton is not the man to make that argument.

His own party have seen to it that he has never held elective office. I think we should accept their judgment on a man - unfortunately for them - they have to do business with all too often, and who won't vanish from public life as so many wish he would.
