For too many years the Weston School Department has, in the opinion of many, failed to make moral, ethical and/or responsible decisions regarding the delivery of appropriate special education, services and basic safety for Weston special education students. In this community of so much abundance, it is unthinkable that our most vulnerable and needy children should be systematically subjected to a lesser quality of education and care - and yet that has seemingly been policy and "the Weston way". It's the dirty little secret that few discuss and many don't want aired in public. The time for secrecy needs to end. The old policies need to be abolished. These children deserve the same excellence in education that their classmates and neighbors benefit from. It's time to air the school committee meetings on cable TV, hold principals accountable for their schools, hold the superintendent of schools accountable for the actions of her principals, and hold the school committee accountable for the actions of the superintendent of schools. ALL of our children should be able to go to school in safe environments where they are encouraged to learn to the best of their ability with highly qualified teachers and proper learning tools - not just those headed to Harvard.
