Highland seeks to cut costs on building

Highland and a Christian organization that helps the needy are working to reduce projected costs of building a larger service center after bids came in about $100,000 more than expected.

Rather than seek new architectural drawings and new bids, Highland City Council is working with low-bidder Korte & Luitjohan Contractors Inc. in Highland to cut costs for Highland Area Christian Service Ministry's new center. It's difficult dealing with bid processes and contractors. Remember, they are marketing their services, and will try to up-charge by adding unrequested, upgraded, and/or unnecessary services or components to the bid package. They don't do charity work.

Korte already owns everything else in Highland, whatever happened to the time-honored policy of making the lowest bid and then going over budget?

K&L does seem to get many of the city projects, maybe too many.

The city rolled over and is paying the increase, and floating money for this non-profit group.

Does anyone else think this facility is helping to attract deadbeats to Highland?

I'm not sure if the city should be supporting a food pantry. It's a nice idea, but what about churchs and other non-profits. I know it sounds cruel, but I have to work for my money and I can CHOOSE whether to give to a food pantry. I can't choose whether to pay my taxes.

Thanks to the Korte's for "selling" less then three acres to the city for $240,000 to upgrade Iberg Road. Looks like supporting this mayor is really paying off. Was that land really worth $90,000 an acre?

Money seems to be readily accessible for the food pantry ($25,000?) but then the council balks when it comes time to re-paving the other part of 6th street.

Does anyone know what happened to the economic development guy?

I heard that he upset some people at the top by saying something about real estate signs? I am sure there is more to it but then you'd have to ask the elected officials and no one seems to want to question them about anything controversial.

Just another secret this mayor is keeping from the public. Funny weren't his supporters angry about closed meetings & secrets from the previous administration? Guess they didn't mean it or have double standards. I'm betting on the latter.
