RCN is a despicable company. They borrowed billions of dollars to build their network with a seriously flawed business plan. The went bankrupt and screwed thousands of shareholders The new company is run by the lenders who don't give a damn about their customers. They lie in their ads and bury important details in fine print. They put it up for sale earlier this year when they thought they could turn a quick buck. Its all about the dollar for RCN. Ask the hundreds of employees that they laid off!
If you have a choice, stick with the local cable companies that have been serving the area for years and actually have local news!

Like "No"Service Electric is that much better. I was their "customer" for ten years off of Route 100 in Lowhill Twp. and coped with an ancient coaxial cable that they refused to update because too few people lived in the area for them to make enough profit like those McMansion developments in Lower Mac, Bethlehem Twp., etc.

But I still paid the increased $$$$ each year to pay for improvements to the system everywhere else even though the signal on my road remained terrible, and internet and phone weren't available. Out of desperation with the lack of customer care with Service Electric I decided to try satellite TV when "No"Service got rid of their programming tiers. Funny thing is I can still get tiered programming with DISH Network.

I went with DISH Network and got cystal-clear reception with more real channels at a lower price (and the signal only goes out for 3-5 minutes tops in the heaviest of rains - I lost cable for hours at a time by comparison.

When I moved to Q-town in Comcast country I stuck with satellite TV due to my terrible experience with "No"service Electric. The Walson empire is arrogant, to say the least. Stay away from them.

I would consider DISH or DirectTV but they don't have Comcast Sports, Video on Demand or real high speed internet. I live in outside of Walnutport and have Blue Ridge. RCN has no chance against them. I've seen RCN's Video on Demand offering and its horrible compared to Blue Ridge. Plus Blue Ridge is a local family owned company that actually cares and is involved in the community. Not like the RCN leeches.

Maybe all will be happier when Verizon FIOS becomes available in the area.

I would go with a dish in a heartbeat, but can't because I need the high-speed internet.

My question is-
Since there is now some competition in my area, does that mean the rates goes down? Probably not.

i have no problem with Service Electric, i have been using them for almost 20 years. Any time i had a cable problem, they allways repaired the problem. They are fininally offering two-way internet in my area. one-way works great. RCN was not interested in providing my area with two-way internet. Verizon will not offer DSL in my area, i have called them at least 50 times for DSL. RCN will not update the cable in my area because not enough people would us it. like the other person said. RCN is only interested in the bucks. For those people with the dishes, who will service your dish problems? I would prefer to stay with a local provider, my choice is Service Electric Cable.

I switched from Service Electric to Dish Network about 4 years ago, when Service Electric totally hosed my cable install when I moved into my new home. I transferred my service from my previous residence, and I took the afternoon off to meet with the installer and he NEVER showed up. I called them, and they said that I called and cancelled the install order!! They actually did send a tech over right away, but he had absolutely no clue what he was doing, and couldn't get my cable modem to work. Then I received the first bill from them, and it was wayyyy off. Apparently when the service was supposedly cancelled, they couldn't offer me the same package that I had originally, and I was being charged almost double. Their explanation was that they didn't have the package that I had anymore. Needless to say, I cancelled the service, and called Dish Network directly. They sent a tech out the very next day, which was a SUNDAY, and had my dish mounted and boxes installed in about an hour. I've never had a problem with my install. I had an issue with one of the boxes one time, and they overnighted a new box to me. With Dish, I've got all the same channels for less than SECTV - Did I also mention that Dish presently offers double the HD channels than any other provider, including Direct?

Oh, to the other person that mentioned about the in demand stuff - Dish does have their own version of in demand it called OnDemand.

I have Service Electric because they made one of those "agreements" with the builder in my development. I've had both on and off in my previous house where I could choose. RCN's service was ALWAYS better. Hands down. Cable modem was always faster and significantly more reliable than SECTV's. Can't speak for Verizon or Comcast's service, but people I know seem to think Comcast is the devil for some reason. I'll take whoever provides the best service.. unfortunately I only have 1 choice at the moment! Lame.

To "NO RCN":
Sounds like you got screwed with an investment in RCN. Well, that sucks, but my dad got screwed buying Worldcom stock (DUH!). No matter, RCN's network FAR surpasses SECTV's. SECTV is limited by a seriously outdated infrastructure. But I guess if you go bankrupt building a network, it's because you're not cutting corners. Good for the customers in the end, not so good for investors!

I have RCN and it sux!!! We have cable, internet and phone. A few weeks there was a loud boom, the power flashed and we had nothing. I had to call them on my cell and finally got them here to check things out. The boom was a Monday and they came out here on Wed. Nothing for that period of time. Then when they get here, they find out that its affecting the entire side of my street!!!! They had NOOOOO IDEA this was going on. By Thurs sometime everything was back on. Plus, our box is a piece of crap!!!! Our phone goes out once every 2 or 3 weeks. They said it was a dust build up in the box....unplug the box, take out the battery and blow on the battery and inside the box to clear the "dust" put the battery back, plug it back in and wait to see if it worked. Thats RCN customer service.

Im glad the Reigelsville signed a franchise with RCN hopefully they will expand into the adjacent townships in upper bucks to offer current technology that SECTV can NOT provide. their string and wire network should be placed in musuem. no fiber no hdtv tons of religious channels.. who wants them they are definitely stuck in time warp. yeah they might offer all the goodies in the cities but theres no comparison with there instructure and RCN s count yourself lucky to have 20 mega modem and a decent diverse channel line up and telephone service because SECTV sure doesnt offer in upper bucks.

We live in 2-way area (both RCN and SECTV) of Allentown and had RCN phone/internet/tv bundle for years, but they kept raising prices and dropping channels from their basic lineup and moving them to their digital tier which costs extra. So we recently decided to try Service Electric's phone/internet/tv bundle for $90/month (regular price, not a 12-month promotional price like RCN offers). Here's the scoop. Basically, SECTV has a better channel lineup than RCN, but their analog cable picture quality is worse overall than RCN's with several channels appearing too dark and having other artifacts, although RCN also had its troubles on some channels but not as bad as SECTV. SECTV includes channels like GSN and NFL Network in their basic lineup, where to get them with RCN, you have to pay about $20/month extra for their digital tier. Basic cable channel lineup goes to SECTV. Analog cable picture quality goes to RCN. HD picture quality also was better with RCN. As far as internet goes, we had 7 Mbps with RCN and now we're supposed to have 5 Mbps with SECTV. RCN was almost always full speed for us at 7 Mbps. With SECTV, we average about 1.5 Mbps during late afternoon/evening hours, far short of the 5 Mbps we're supposed to be getting. I've emailed SECTV twice about the slow internet issues, and they never replied. RCN would always reply within a couple of days. Customer service goes to RCN. As far as phone service goes, we haven't had any major issues with either provider. Verdict: Overall, we paid about $30 more per month with RCN but were happier with their service, albeit not completely satisfied. We are considering going back to RCN due primarily to our dissatisfaction with the poor customer service, ongoing slow internet, and inconsistent picture quality we're experiencing with SECTV. Low price does not equal good value. Low price + quality service = good value. SECTV needs to realize this. Anyway, this is our experience. Yours, depending where you live, may vary, but any company that doesn't reply to customer's emails is a sign of trouble if you ask me. My suggestion, if money isn't everything for you, then just go with RCN and not Service Electric, if you can.

SECTV does not. SECTV does not provide FASTER modem speeds nor do they provide their own phone services. Everything is handled by a third party. IE: their internet is through prolog and their phone services are through Ironton phone company. Who is the true triple play provider? RCN. Yes in some instances you pay more for your services AFTER promotions but you get more VALUE for your bucks! I know a friend of mine who works for them so if you need services contact me and I'll let him know.

I also live in Allentown where you can choose either SECTV or RCN. I've had both. And I'm happier with RCN. I have the bundle with the digital tier for the TV. It's good to know the games on the NFL Network will be on RCN this year. The Internet is SSOOO much faster with RCN than it was with SECTV.

Yeah, it costs more with RCN, but the picture quality on all channels is superb and the Internet is far superior. When I need customer service, RCN has been satisfactory, nothing special, but nothing to turn me off to them either. I can't remember the last time the cable was knocked out for more than a half hour.

Rcn's VOD is awful. Anything worthwhile is not free. The selection of pay VOD is horrible and when you finally find something worthwhile it doesn't work half the time on weekends. I'd much rather have the HD selection, local sports & news from Service Electric. I must have gone over to friends house who have Service Electric half a dozen times last year to watch sports that wasn't available on RCN. By the way, RCN will be sold in the near future so you don't know what you'll get.

Service Electric does have more HD channels than RCN, but I've seen the picture quality of both company's HD channels, and even though RCN has fewer HD channels, their picture quality is better. Seems to me, SECTV uses more compression resulting in poorer picture quality, even on their non-HD digital channels. However, depending on the size of your TV and how far away from it you sit, you may not notice the difference. Service Electric's internet speed continues to be slow. It's been weeks since I emailed them about it and no response. It seems to me that the only thing better about SECTV is more channels and lower price (if you go with the PIC bundle). RCN's got better picture quality, consistently fast internet (you get the actual speed you pay for), and customer service that actually replies to your emails, although not always with the answer you'd like to hear. This has been my experience. Yours may vary.

Think about this. If you ever go to SECTV's office by Airport Rd, take notice to what it looks like in there. It looks like something out of the early 70's. They don't put money into anything! They are outdated and their customer support is horrible. They are incompetent and arrogant. They couldn't care less if you are unhappy. No one in that company does their job correctly. AVOID SECTV AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
