Wasn't he the one that spanked the girls too hard and hit the guys in the head with their football helments??

Don't know about the girl thing, but he did coach and discipline in the Bear Bryant style. I personally never had a problem with that style and I think his college coaching record has proven him to be a great coach.

When he was here he was a very young coach, probably made a few mistakes and he didn't have much talent in the upper classes, but he could coach. The best I ever had in HS, unfortunately I only had him after our undefeated Jr.High season was over and four of us moved up the last for games to help out a Senior High team without much talent or spirit.

After that he moved on to greener pastures.

You are one guy who must have a bad memory.. This coach was a sadistic jerk and that is being kind.... Were you there when he whipped our whole gym class who forgot either to bring soap or a towel.... One poor young man was whipped so hard with only his gym shorts on that his blood blisters scabbed over in the PE class and he was crying in tears as we had to pour water on them to keep from tearing flesh.... Did you ever get 3 licks because you couldn't here his high pitched weak voice when he called your name in study hall.
Had not a few brave fathers and mothers finally started speaking up and complaining,(the school administration was so in awe of this big jerk having been a Captain of the Razorbacks they let him do things that today he would be prosecuted for) he might have stayed another year.... We went 0-11 that year...
If I met him today I would demand an apology or would attempt to kick his sorry, sick asssss.. A shameful year and man he was...

Yep, I remember Bell. I'm glad he made it in college ball and to the Hall of Fame. It almost turned around for him and went the other way due to his disciple perversion. He was definitely not suited to teaching high school classes. There was in fact a law suit filed against him, but it was dropped. Joe Spades, the principal at the time did make him apologize to one student for the way he treated him.

If you're talking about John Oberkfelt (sp.)well then yes I was there when he kicked a soccer ball into the lights at the top of the Gym and broke out a few lights, in fact John was a good friend.

A good friend that later robbed the Catholic Church and was sent to Juvenal

Yes I did get three licks from him a couple of times, but I was a widow woman's son who probably needed a little direction at the time. Plus, it wasn't my nature to run home to momma and daddy.

And that team had the sorriest attitude of any I ever played on, many were more interested in chasing 8th grade girls and their next beer than they ever were in football.

BTW our team went 7-0-1.

You must have been one of the decent teachers who saw along with the Late great WR Glenn the havoc he layed on our poor school.. Thank you for speaking up

You judge me unkindly my friend, if BS means Billy Spotts then you have your time frame a little off, he was three years older than me. And I've never heard of George Stanley but I will get the old yearbook out to confirm. Sounds to me that you fit in real nicely around here when it comes to fact.

David Shipman was a Senior when I was a freshman so I doubt seriously that I was even in the house when you so easily defame me on a public forum. If you can remember football players were exempt from PE so an incident involving a PE class was out of the question in my case.

I think you owe me an apology, if you're man enough.

Bell was destined to be a good coach if he could survive high school coaching. He couldn't even teach Study Hall and P.E. but a coach he was. He probably leared more about how not to treat kids in W.R. than any where else he coached. Congratulations Coach Bell, we are glad you made it, but you owe us one in W.R.

Maybe we could invite Bell back to speak at WRHS and he could also apologize while here or for those who liked it he could throw a few helments or bust a few butts. Line up girls.

As young as I was at the time, my experience with Coach Bell was more limited than it was with the HS teachers and students so I defer to your more informed grasp of the situation. Also W.R. Glenn was one of my heroes and if he wanted Coach Bell removed the that seals the deal.

All I know is the man treated me fairly and later recommended me to attend the Citadel.

No, if you are JW, I don't owe you an apology, it is the other way around my friend. This incident was after football practice and you and Billy offered to give me some of the same as the poor spread eagled water boy and goffer George had recieved... However, I was taking off my cleats and also being young and impulsive, told you both what I would do.... Now do you remember?
Also dear friend, I am the man who named you and Dennis Brown the 2 best Full backs in the my lifetime... Also Sammy Orville Weir as the best ever..... So, I really think I got my facts straight.... Have you? If Bell would come to the October re-union and be a man and apoligize to WRHS. I would try to forgive and accept him... Otherwise I cannot, only God can do that....

I have kept in contact with the man who you speak of, who personnaly came and confronted Bell and called him out to the area near the flag pole that day.... He had made his son crawl on his belly across the football field for some little infraction during football practice... I was in dear Ms Bushes English class and got to see him raising his fist at Bell and wanted to go cheer him on.... I was perhaps' more of a scholar than an athlete but I quit sports ( I did recieve 3 letters' in school) in the 10th grade because of this man and my grades even went down and I lost interest in school because of him.... Thank God, I recovered and went on to be a succssful person whom I think is contributing now in my semi-retirement for Lawrence county....

I too quit WRHS and went to another school because of Bell's mistreatment of me. He was one of the most vindictive persons I have ever seen.

Bell discouraged a lot of kids that were not even associated with football. I had an incident with him in Study Hall that turned into a horror story. I can't imagine a person teaching like that. He must have has a sordid past. He sure would't make it today. He didn't make it then. I'm glad he got out of High School teaching. I took him before the Board by walking into their meeting and telling them that they had a monster on the loose in that guy. I have laughed about it ever sense.

As God is my witness, the day he slaughtered half our 4th period gym class, the man was actually licking his lips and almost salivating with each lick... All were called down from the bleachers and beaten in front of the class. His paddle was 2 inches thick and had 3 bored holes in it.... I still am mad when I think of the young lives he damaged... We started with around 34 on the senior squad and by the second week, half quit.... That is why he had to bring up the most gifted Junior varsity players to even have 2 full teams for practice... He picked up one large young man in full gear one day in practice to almost eye level and threw him to the ground... That is the day I quit....

Explain to me how a I, two years younger than BS, with totally different friends from that age group, a subject of harassment at times from BS and the other older guys, suddenly became his sidekick in some life altering confrontation with you.

This wasn't some Nazi death camp incident that left you scarred for life I hope.
