Several weeks ago I was a guest at an event at the Walnut Ridge Country Club. I am sorry to say that I was SHOCKED. I thought when we arrived that we surely must have gotten the directions wrong and had arrived at the wrong place. There were overgrown weeds everywhere and the building from the outside looked like an old style abandoned doctor's office. I know Walnut Ridge has felt the impact of a bad economy but it doesn't look like the so called country club has had any type of remodeling in 30 years or more. Has that always been the country club there and is it the only one? For a community as large as Walnut Ridge, I would think you would have a much nicer facility. Is this where your doctors, lawyers, business owners, teachers, and high brow citizens go to meet and socialize? When one thinks of a country club that is not what comes to mind. You usually picture nice buildings and beautifully manicured grounds with nice landscaping and a nice golf course nearby. The inside was clean and tidy and the staff was absolutely wonderful. There were nice tables with table cloths but the decor was certainly lacking. I have read that the city is trying to attract new industry. With new industry will come new residents who are heads of corporations, business people from larger cities. For years the golf and country club scene has been a big part of even smaller towns than Walnut Ridge. Cabot, Arkansas is one example of a small town with a nice country club and golf course community. Is politics the reason that the country club is lacking? I noticed a small but fairly nice airport nearby. Are the two connected in some way? I don't mean to sound so critical but when I inquired about what the problem was, no one seemed to know or perhaps they were just not comfortable addressing the issue.

Walnut ridge is no where near comparable to walnut ridge. Population and type of residents are completely different.

Yes,I don't know what capacity you were a visitor, but as said visitor, your host should have filled you in to the situation with the CC. There is only a clubhouse, where so called elite gather to drink and listen to a local band or 2, but the grounds where the golf course WAS, has been demolished by forces connected to the airport commission, who were locked in a battle with the CC association to keep the CC open. The FAA and airport commission won the decision and made them raze the grounds of the 9-hole golf course, uprooting trees and fairways so that some so-called big airplanes could land out there to be dismantled by an industry known as UAM. Now UAM has announced their decision to close their facility because those big planes are no longer allowed to land, because it is causing wear and tear on the runway, apparently the airport commission doesn't want to repair the runways to allow the planes to land, and UAM wants a bigger building for their facilities, which WR won't give them, so UAM is packing up and moving the whole operation to Tupelo Mississippi who I understand is building them the desired facilities to accommodate them. Just another example of WR losing industry to another city, along with jobs. Now when you have no jobs in our city, and manufacturing plants closing, what do you think is going to happen to the CC? Walnut Ridge is a dying town.

Heck look at the board members. They are nobody special and have no idea how to run a country club. Hear ole Henson is on the board to get out and see his gal on the side.

Thank you for your response. I agree there are some differences as far as comparing WR and Cabot. However, I could have named several small towns that would have been more comparable. Some of the other residents who posted seemed to feel there has been lack of proper leadership, thus, causing loss and missed opportunities. One resident said the CC has simply become a place where those who think they are the "elite" go and have drinks and maybe listen to a band. Perhaps they are content with things just as they are. But I believe there are residents who would much prefer to have a nice place for reunions, wedding receptions, engagement parties, etc. One resident gave a very good explanation regarding the situation with the airport and the reasoning behind ripping up the golf course and such. I realize there are far more important issues concerning Walnut Ridge and its residents. I have some close friends who live there and I hope many improvements are made in the town for all residents. I have met Mr. House and I believe he will do his very best to recruit new industry to the area. I have seen so many small town miss out on opportunities due to lack of leadership. Best of luck to all of you!

Thank goodness that people are taking notice and are at least speaking up about how bad things look out there. It is embarrassing for those of us who grew up here and/or live here and we don't have a decent place for any type of nice venue. It is a shame that our residents have to go to Jonesboro or else where to find a nice place for an event. Plenty of small towns have country clubs that aren't run down club houses. I guess the so called elite are content as long as they have a place to go and drink. Do they even charge any type of membership fees? I can't figure out how they keep it running.

Walnut Ridge does not have a Country Club, they have NOW have a bar and grill. But they still refer to it as the WR CC,*L* you are correct when you stated this will hurt the recruitment of new industry, but that did not seem to matter to the leaders of WR! The reason it was not manicured, is simply they dont have the funds to take care of things, and ran off many long time members to Pocahontas, where there is a golf course! Personally it will not be open for long, they simply dont generate enough business to stay open for long! IMHO!!

Your wrong B!tch!!! They are making money now. The golf course upkeep is what made them go under. Not enough money to support. Way less overhead now!!! Alot of functions out there on a regular basis that will keep it open!!!

Was it really necessary for you to address the person who posted before you as Bitch? I am amazed that adults can't have a discussion without someone using profanity or name calling. I agree that it appears to be nothing but a bar and grill. They still call it a country club so they can serve liquor in a dry county to their so called elite. As far as a lot of functions being booked there on a regular basis I doubt that will happen if things don't improve. The only reason they get the functions they do is because there isn't any where else in WR to have anything, especially for those who want an open bar for their event.

LOL you are really silly, it pretty common knowledge around here that they are hanging on by a thread, just like when there was a golf course. Tell me how you can lose the membership they lost paying around 100 per month and now the members pay something around 50! and they are coming out ahead?????? sorry the figures just dont match up. sure they are having afew functions and probably making a little money, but IF they were doing so GREAT, dont you think they would mow the grass and makes things appear to be doing great??? they are hanging on by a shoe string, just like the CC did. you just simply dont have enough population to make it a great bar and grill.. and that is ALL it is a bar and grill. where you can have a party. When I see them going in and redoing and updating things, then I will believe they are making money!

Hope the visiting ladies apprecaite the ladies rest room because the GOLFERs paid for having that redone! roflmao!!!

Wrong again they have more money now then when there was a golf course. NO OVERHEAD and wages for the GOLF COURSE. Close to 100 members and a couple different functions a month keeps it going just fine. I am sure you are a kelly or a ryan just trying to talk bad about the club since you don't supprt it any more. Heck the Ryan's were the worst ones out there. From what I oberved out there NEVER ONCE did I see them purchase any food in all the years they were members. Real Supporters!!!

Why can't people just get along. If you don't go out there then don't worry about it. We do go about once a month and really like the food. I like to have a drink with my dinner. The food is amazing and everyone is very nice. If they do have to close one day at least they tried!

Wow...really..I will bite....do you really want to pick up some mud and throw-it???? Tell us what is up with ole Henson, and "his gal"? Make sure before you throw, you have your facts straight. Because you can hurt alot of people. I know he is a big flirt. Is this more than flirting? Who is she? I have seen him out there before and wonder where his wife was. He does this in front of his little girl? She is always with him. Or are you just mad at him??? He must have beat you at a game of cards. Tell Tell!

I am not a Kelly or a Ryan. I am not from there, but calling the place a country club is like calling the Polar Freeze a 5 Star restaurant.(No offence, I love the Polar Freeze) If it is not a country club then "remove" the Label and call it what it is. It is somewhat misleading. If it is was no longer called a "Country Club" could they still keep their liquor license? Is that really the issue here?
