Meeting set on BR bridge

A meeting regarding the Black River bridge at Black Rock will be held on Thursday, March 17, at the Lawrence County Courthouse in Walnut Ridge, according to County Judge Dale Freeman.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and both Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and U.S. Department of Transportation representatives will be present.

In February, the AHTD announced that the weight limit on the bridge had been lowered from the standard limit of 40 tons. The new limit is 33 tons for five-axle trucks.

According to the AHTD, the limit was changed based on an engineering analysis of the structure and an on-site evaluation of the bridge.

Replacement of the bridge is scheduled to begin in 2013, and, according to the AHTD, officials will be routinely monitoring the existing bridge until the new one is completed.

The highway department had reported that impact to travel on Highway 63 should be limited because other nearby bridges are already posted at lower weight limits.

Local trucking companies, gravel quarries and other businesses report having to change their loads to comply with the new weight limit, though. Whether companies cut loads or reroute around the bridge it will increase their costs, especially with the increase in fuel prices.

In addition to the weight limit change, the speed limit on the bridge has also been lowered to 45 miles per hour.

The current status of the bridge, as well as future plans, will be addressed at the March 17 meeting. The public is invited to attend.

Everyone in Lawrence County knows how bad condition this bridge is in and if there is anyway to expedite the building of a new bridge we need to be working to that end. I plan on being at the meeting.

"The highway department had reported that impact to travel on Highway 63 should be limited because other nearby bridges are already posted at lower weight limits."
Some very dubious logic here: When they lower the limit on the ONLY bridge between the Ozarks (quarries & Springfield freight) with a 40 ton limit and the delta, the impact is more than limited. It is a very large impact on those truckers and their customers.

The Black Rock bridge has already failed the last couple inspections, if something ain't done soon it will fall in and we just hope nobody gets killed when it does.

Is there another way to get to Black Rock? Also what doesn't the county have them start on bridge now?

The county or for that matter the state does not have any say on when US highways are built or bridges on those highways, also do you have any concept of how much money we are talking about. I wish it were that simple. Attend the meeting and after that maybe we will have some answers.
By the way the only other way to get to Black Rock is either by boat or drive through Randolph or Jackson counties a long way around.

The bridge has to fail inspection inorder to qualify for priority funding from the feds. We have now crossed that hurdle. As soon as the funding is oked we will see a new bridge being built. However we who live now will have to suffer with it like our grandparents and great grandparents did when it was first being built.

If I understand right there was a ferry to use while the original bridge was being built. Hopefully they will get the new bridge built before the current bridge falls in.

Federal money, especially Obama Money sure looks good with a need like this. Keep the Republicans away from the meeting. Both Crawford and Boozeman are likely against it. They would prefer a toll bridge. or to charge it off of food stamps and Medicaid. Let the poor pay for it. THey use it the most.

The police are really patrolling it to enforce the new weight and speed limits.

So Boozeman and Crawford are against using stimilus money to build the bridge? I guess we will soon find out what we have elected. I'm sure our citizens would love a toll bridge.

yes but most our grandparents and great grandparents farmed on one side of the river or the other and didn't cross on a daily basis...Most of us now work on the other side of the river and have to cross it on a daily basis and with gas prices going up we can't afford to have to go all the way around for 2 to 4 years. not to mention the extra time it would take to get to work..a lot of the people on our side of the river work at jonesboro and paragould and it already takes a hour or longer to get to work.

If it isn't going to hold up we need to fix it now! Or get a ferry going or something we can't let someone get hurt.

I cross the bridge 2 or 3 times daily and do not think it is in any worse shape than a year ago or longer. I do think they are hyping it as much as possible in order to expedite getting funds for a new bridge. A little black-top on the surface and the ride would smooth out. I'd really like to see photos and data about the underpinings to see if they are as worn as some seem to think.
Do note the new 45 mph speed limit - the city of Black Rock, the county and state will make some do-re-mi on that.
As there are no scales on 63 how are they enforcing the weight rule? Is that a weight sensor they put on the South end embedded in the road?

Don't worry about the auto, worry about the big trucks and several at one time. I think if trucks would go one at a time it would be OK. Perhaps a traffic light turning it into one lane for the duration would do the job.

Haven't you seen the big cracks where the expansion joints cant be closed any more. It is not the surface that is dangerous. It is the structure. It has been bad for several years and has got down right dangerous.
