Some of our problems we have now are that developers are being permitted to build new structures within just a few feet of the existing roadways.(Huntersville Town Hall?) I know many times a short turn lane is constructed but not requiring developers to provide land right of way for future expansion is very poor planning. As I drive through the area it drives me crazy when I see intersections and strip malls having utility lines buried about ten feet from the existing road, knowing full well a few years in the future expansion will be needed and guess what... While I'm ranting, why not consider 4-Way/All-Way stops (no utility/expensive electronic control costs!) at bottleneck areas: new mall Rd. behind Target at Exit 25, all the T-Roads feeding into Rd. 115 in Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson, and who is it that designs new intersections without a straight, left and right turn lanes? A lot of new, reconstructed intersections use only one lane for straight and right turns, thus taking away, for the most part, "Right on Red" turning. Just look at these places and see where everyone cuts through the grass to turn right.
Please require developers to donate land back to the town/state for future expansion.

After relocating to the Lake Norman area a few years ago I was astonished to see the inefficiency in the designs of the roads and intersections.
The 21/73 intersection in Huntersville is a disgrace. While they finally figured out that a southbound right turn lane was a good idea, what about an eastbound right turn lane onto 21 south? In addition a northbound right turn lane onto 73 east would alleviate much of the backup.
On W T Harris Blvd westbound, there isn't even a lane dedicated to merging onto I-77 northbound. I often see traffic sitting at the light behind a vehicle that is going straight when these cars could all be merging onto the highway.
In Mooresville on 150 eastbound at the Lowes home center there should be a right turn lane that goes into the parking lot so traffic going nto the lot doesn't back up waiting for the light.
In Denver at Rte 16/73, though the Lowes shopping center is up and runnin and 73 has been widened west of the intersection, there is still no right turn lane southbound on Rte 16. These are cost effective, "simple" fixes.
On Rte. 16 at the I-485 interchange I can not belive they set up the off ramps with additional traffic lights. Didn't they think there were enough on Rte 16 to begin with? I wonder if they even considered doing a clover leaf intersection whereby traffic exiting I-485 could merge onto Rte. 16 in a smooth, flowing pattern.
I could go on for days but I am just astonished by the lack of foresight in fixing some of these areas. Put in a few right turn only lanes for Pete's sake!! You'd be amazed at how cost effective and traffic flow effective this is.
