The announcement that John Turner is running for Sheriff of Walla Walla is some of the best news I've read in a long time. There's no one even close to being as qualified as John is for the position. Sure the other two candidates have over thirty years law enforcement experience, but I'm sure all of us have worked in offices and other business with people who have years of experience too. That doesn't mean they're the most qualified to be your boss. John has the knowledge, temperament, personality, and ambition to bring Walla Walla into the 21st century. The other candidates don't possess any of these skills. When the primary election rolls around, the other candidates will find that they've wasted their energies and money--they should just throw in the towel now and hope they have a place under John's new administration.

Your wrong, John Turner is not qualified to be Sheriff of Walla Walla County. No State experience, no local experience and no basic Law Enforcement certification. John Turner is qualified to take the basic entry test to become a Police Officer or Deputy. It's been almost 10 years since he worked as a Police Officer and that was in Calf. He needs some kind of local experience before he gets my vote. This is not a personal attact on John just my opinion. I have met John and think he's a nice guy but needs more for my vote.

Are you saying that someone who has been working in the big bad area of Walla Walla is more experienced then
someone who has experience as a policeman in the worst parts of California? Someone who has served RECENTLY with our loved ones in Iraq? Someone who has worked as an attorney REPRESENTING policeman and making sure their rights are protected?
There's more but I think just that says it all.

Mr. Wake up, Calf. law and Wash. law are very different. When I think of a Sheriff for my County I think of someone who can step right in and do the job. John will have obtain some training to get his Wash. State cert. This is Walla Walla not L.A.
Both of the other candidates have served in the military. John was not in the military he was a private contractor. I still think what he did was great but he needs more experience in the local and/or State law enforcement field other than just being an attorney.
Again, this is not a personal attack on the man himself. I want local experienced people in the top positions. I think John should test with the WWPD or the WWSO and show us what he can do. Actions speak louder than words. Maybe then I would give him my vote!!!!!!!

You are misinformed. The Wash. State certification test you refer to is an online 9 week training course. Additionally John Turner retired from LAPD in 2004 with 20 years of law enforcement experience. He was only part-time for two years as he practiced law representing police officers. John is more than qualified to be Sheriff of WW county.

Happy for ww. How am I misinformed? I said he has to attend training. Your telling me its a 9 week online TRAINING. Here or there he has to attend training to obtain his Wash. cert.
This is my opinion and you have yours. Ur not going to win this and neither am I. Most of the City of Walla Walla Police Officers have just as much if not more experience than Turner. This is not what makes Sheriff material. Yes, its an elected position and anyone can run. My vote stays with one of the current Sheriffs Office Captains!!!!!!!!!

The position of Sheriff is mainly an administrative position. As such, in my opinion, it is necessary to select a person that has the ability to lead, direct and follow the law. Therefore, to select a person that can fulfill that charge is non other than Bill White. Sure, Romine is surely qualified, but, running the jail is only part of the administrative duties. Bill handles patrol and investigations, has provided the department with equipment by searching and securing grants, and has major support of a majority of police officers in the area. Turner did not move to this area to fill a position in law enforcement, BUT since one came up, OH, OK, I'll through my hat in for something to do.

Turner's certification training isn't much different than doctors, lawyers, counselors, and teachers. All have to be certified/licensed in a particular state to practice. Sure, there's a few differences between states, but if you're a counselor in Oregon, it's not that hard to pass the Washington test. Being law enforcement certified is similar. And Baffled is correct in that Turner didn't return home to Walla Walla to run as Sheriff, but he was encouraged to do so by law enforcement and community members. Do you not think they assumed White or Romine might run--that's why Turner was encouraged to do so. Heck, even a top secret operation called on Turner for his expert experience. It would be silly for Walla Walla to ignore such an opportunity.

"Even a top secret operation called on Turner for his experience"? If it was so "Top Secret" then why do you know about it? All i keep reading and hearing about is how Turner has done this "top secret" thing and this "top secret" thing... what has he done?? Another question i have is; exactly how many years did he serve with the LAPD? I've heard all everything from 4 to 20 years. which one is it? John, would you like to comment on this?

Go to his website, send Turner an email, and get your answer.

I have gone onto his website but it still doesn't show dates... Not only that why would Mr. Hofer-Turner stop practicing law after 3 years? on the California State Bar website it shows he was licensed in late 2001 and then retired his license in 2005! Seems like someone can't pick a job. Bill White has been with the department for many years and has worked his way up the ranks to where he is at now. He shows he can stick with it. Mr. Hofer-Turner has not.

Wake up~ You do realize that John Turner spent most of his time in Hollywood right?? it's part of the LAPD. I agree with Johnson family on most things, the slandering parts i don't agree with but maybe i don't know him as well as Johnson family does. I too have met him and think he's a pretty nice guy, he'll make a great sheriff... Just not right now. To young in experience for my taste.

Based on the 27 letters of recommendation and the personal conversations I've had with Turner, his in-laws, his wife, and his former co-workers I don't believe a word the JOHNSON family is saying. You sound like a disgruntled employee who got caught in the cookie jar.

Turner is the guy for sheriff. White is a nice guy, but no way is he ready to be sheriff. He can't even settle conflict in his own office.

I agree. It's one thing to state an opinion, yet an entirely different approach has been done here by the " johnson" family. I doubt that's even their real last name cuz no one could be that stupid to actually post their real name. On the other hand, the " johnson" style of slander and rumor mongering is very very very typical of Walla Walla. There are only two things bad about this town: the gangs and the rumors. Big city folk like myself find the rumors incredibly un-educated. It just shows how shallow some of the folks are here to have to resort to make believe stories.

And one more thing. Why do the 3rd and 4th generation Walla Walla folks hate newcomers so much? Do you not understand that we contribute to your tax base? Do you not understand that we buy properties, groceries, cars and fill up your empty church pews ?

Do you know what I think NOW after hearing for a year that " everyone knows everyone and is somehow related." ?( I've heard this ONE 1000 TIMES!)

At first I thought it was cute. But after an amazing amount of rudeness, staring, and outright hostility towards newcomers, I NOW believe what is actually meant by that small town comment is probably 2nd cousin relations! So that's what ya'll are doing in your spare time. Making up rumors and populating this community with your own kin.

Turner has his hands full in this town. That's for sure. And don't worry. I am moving. Gotta get back to an educated society.

G_woman, please don't go away thinking Walla Walla is a bad town. As you can see by my comment above the lies and backstabbing really get to long time residents in this town also. I've lived here all my life and I see the people that your referring to but please believe me that there are truley wonderful people here also.
I wish you had met those people instead of the others that give Walla Walla a bad name.
So Sorry!

one more thing G...
John Turner is a 4th generation here also but he is the kindest person you can meet. He will do anything for someone who needs help. I have had that experience with him and his wife.

I'm so sorry you didn't meet people like them instead. wonderful people.

It took me awhile to figure out whether or not I was going to respond. I decided I should. You, a stranger, have showed me more kindness than I could have expected. It is appreciated by me. Truly.

Turner had other jobs. Big deal. Turner had other jobs IN THE SAME FIELD. Big deal. Turner is going to incorporate his experience to Sheriff. Yea. This is a big deal.

There are certain groups of people in this town who for whatever reasons, hate newcomers. Take for example my next door neighbors. I broke down one day and called the Cops on them for shouting " Go back to ..." at me. The cops did indeed stop them from shouting anymore. Now they routinely stand outside my rental and flip me off silently. They also still give my child hostile looks. I can't call the Cops on this. They are obviously disabled people with inbreed hatred and are one of the groups of people who in breed and are responsible for bullying. One of the residents of this same nextdoor hostile house just got fired from Albertsons on Melrose for treating customers in the same fashion. I'm not even surprised.

You guys here in Walla Walla are sitting on PRIME real estate. Everyone wants to purchase farm area, wineries, older houses, or a nice quiet town. No one is going to purchase ANYTHING when this hostility is allowed to endure.

I think Turner is perfect for this job. He brings his adventures, his experience and most of all his knowledge of Community Policing. He is not a philanderer. He is a smart, worldly normal guy who had a vision of returning to his town and making it a better place. If he could get the harassment stopped next door from me stopped, then it would be nice. But I never suggested he is a Miracle Worker.

I'm only speaking out cuz I know what it feels like to be considered an outsider.
